Answer:
There are times when you may want to enter your garage without having the wireless remotes that come with the unit. An externally mounted unit is very useful for this purpose. You can also give out the code to the external unit to friends and family, etc.

Answer:
Mostly when more than two people reside at the same address and need access to the garage from the outside. Some households leave their front door locked all the time and access the house via the garage. When going on vacation, and you need to allow the neighbor limited access, to feed the pets for example, you can give them a remote, and not the keys to the house.

You may have two different cars with the wireless in each one. It is better to just hit the button when you enter the garage rather than enter the car and use the wireless. Just preference I guess.

This opener works differently than most, the motor assembly moves along a stationary chain that is mounted in the rail. You'd have to use the assembly that comes from the manufacturer.

Your old Craftsman rail is NOT compatible.
Home Depot will farm out the installation job and you may suffer a "pig in poke" installer; call the Sommer USA office at 704-424-5787 for an installer recomendation in your area.

The professional garage door opener is using 2 longer rails and 1 connecting sleeve. The Home Depot version is using 3 shorter rails and 2 connecting sleeves. This enables the rail to fit into the Home Depot retail package.

3/4 HP Garage Door Opener is rated 4.8 out of 5 by 661.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from 3/4 HP GARAGE DOOR OPENER I replaced an old garage door opener with this new opener. I like the way it operates. It is very quiet. Some reviews do not like that it is slower than other makes. I have another door next to this one with an old opener which is quite noisy and vibrates. These are 8 foot doors. the old opener closes 2 to 3 feet ahead of this new opener. Big deal. What difference does 1 or 2 seconds make. It is not an Olympic event. The quiet and solid operation of the new opener wins.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from quiet smooth operation / 2+ day install(!) We installed the Direct Drive Garage Door Opener in a rental unit, single car garage with sectional metal door. While the online youtube video is immensely helpful, the installation process is not so simple as the video appears. That said, having the video is invaluable, a handy visual primer w/ good tips for first time installers (manual directions are OK, too). The install took 2.5 days, b/c there was no previous garage door opener, so the ceiling mounting and metal door reinforcement parts had to be purchased and installed too. Plus we took time in properly balancing the door before beginning the installation of the Direct Drive opener. (note, the garage door MUST be correctly balanced or you'll risk burning out the motor carriage, voiding the warranty, too). The 2 remote controls are tiny and if it were me using it (instead of our tenant) i'd want bigger buttons with more contrast than a blue button on a black device. i'm older, vision esp. in low light/nighttime is weak. the wall control is surprisingly light plastic (feels cheap), but it seems to work well. Tips: 1) When initially opening and closing the door, to have this device/machine "Learn" the individual open/close range, the photo eyes MUST be correctly aligned (check to see their LED green-red lights are on), b/c if not, the door will open, but not close. 2), Pay attention to your installation instruction variants (noted on a separate sheet than the manual) for updated installation instruction (different than when the manual was printed) 3) Leave extra wiring length (even just a few inches) when connecting photo eyes and wall control to the control unit. We cut ours exactly, to not have loose floppy wiring, but that made it harder to insert the wires into the control terminals. Had we allowed for extra length (like the video shows), it is easier to insert the wire ends to terminals and the extra could be stapled to the ceiling neatly 4) This garage has a low ceiling and the Direct Drive just made it with clearance as the door opens and closes, to not hit the center rail. If you have a low ceiling, you might need to consider the order of the steps for install (note door arm connection to the motor carriage and don't put on the locking washers for center rail attachment to the ceiling mounting until you are sure your door arm smoothly operates - we just connected Center rail bolts and nuts w/o locking washers, then after the door arm was connected and we checked for good clearance, we undid the bolts on the center rail, added the locking washers and reconnected bolts, locking washers and nuts, all fine) Direct Drive Garage Door Opener seems well designed and engineered. Glad we bought it for the silent, smooth operation. In retrospect, we'd have it professionally installed with the purchase. 2 people, middle DIY ability (we've installed toilets, tile, laminate flooring, painted interior and exteriors), aged 41 and 52, if it matters. This install require very minimal physical strength (not a heavy task at all).

This is the moment. Forget the clunky obnoxious noise generating throwbacks and reap the rewards of the digital age. Seriously, this opener is spooky quiet. I replaced 2 1/2 hp liftmaster openers with 2 of these units. Difference between night and day. With a properly operating garage door, you will only hear a whisper during operation. After you install it, spray all the hinges, cables and moving mechanisms with 3-1 oil. Yep it stinks... Still do it. Quieting down the mechanical drive components lets the opener show it's true potential Most of your noise will be generated from your door/track mechanism. Don't blame the opener, its your garage door system

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really Quiet, Easy, Clean Installation I replaced an older chain driven opener with this one. Nice not to have a dirty greasy chain to deal with. Easy to install, especially when replacing existing unit. Very quiet running. Smooth, non-jerky operation. It's been working several weeks now and I have not noticed any initial hesitation on startup. I don't think it is slower than my previous opener. I think the smooth quiet operation might make it seem slow. My main control unit was defective, but customer service replaced it and I had the new one within 3 days. It worked fine! A bit frustrating when it does not work after installation is finally complete, but their response was great and mistakes are inevitable in any manufacturing process. I think the extra cost was well worth it.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Direct drive opener I am writing this review based on my experience with these openers, not the one I ordered. I bought this opener as a gift for a friend who already has these openers. They work great, easy to install and are quiet. So I ordered this one for their extra door. When I went to delivery it to them they were not home so I set it on their porch, bad idea, somebody stole it! So long story short, openers are great and Home Depot sells them at a great price with fast delivery. Would be a five star rating if it wouldn't have been stolen!
