The manufacturer includes 4 rails, two straight and two that have a curve and a straight section. My old garage door rails were kind of beat up so it was good to have new ones as replacements.

The professional garage door opener is using 2 longer rails and 1 connecting sleeve. The Home Depot version is using 3 shorter rails and 2 connecting sleeves. This enables the rail to fit into the Home Depot retail package.

Answer:
Mostly when more than two people reside at the same address and need access to the garage from the outside. Some households leave their front door locked all the time and access the house via the garage. When going on vacation, and you need to allow the neighbor limited access, to feed the pets for example, you can give them a remote, and not the keys to the house.

You may have two different cars with the wireless in each one. It is better to just hit the button when you enter the garage rather than enter the car and use the wireless. Just preference I guess.

Your old Craftsman rail is NOT compatible.
Home Depot will farm out the installation job and you may suffer a "pig in poke" installer; call the Sommer USA office at 704-424-5787 for an installer recomendation in your area.

No, the rail is completely different then the craftsman. If you have it installed then you can take the old one down or just let the installer do it. It is of no use.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.7 out of 5 by 629 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best opener for the price This was the second one I have installed. Easy and fast. Only complaint to the owners is that the remotes are too small. Great life time guarantee sold these two. June 7, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Sommer 3/4 HP Garage Door Opener Extremely quite but faster than I was led to believe from reviews I had previously read. Relatively easy to install...I found a youtube video made it easier than working from the installation manual alone. I have only been using it for a month so I cannot attest to its durability...this is where I will depend on the reputation of German engineering. From a cost perspective there are less expensive options available. I am very happy with my choice to avoid cheaper. (I previously had a chain driven opener that lasted about 6 years and was extremely noisy. It was one of the less expensive options....and definitely cheaper from a quality/durability aspect.) I cannot not give any garage door opener an "excellent" rating..."good" will have to suffice. May 17, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Me think NOT! Based on reviews on the Internet, I'm sure those reading this are suprised at my review.....but, having the experience I had, you'd feel the same way. For three years, I enjoyed the benefits of this garage door opener. It worked flawlessly. Then, I was experiencing phantom door openings. The wall pad, my car opener (Homelink) were "dead." The opener's box/brain's led's were all lit. I unplugged the box then plugged it back in, same thing. Then, I unplugged it for 20 minutes, plugged it back in, all worked again. But, after the incident, I lost sleep every night, I'd wake up, walk to my garage to see if was open again. The phantoms opens left my garage exposed to all my stored belonging and my car. I called Sommer's customer support, spoke to a rep. He wanted me to purchase another wall pad. He said he's never seen a box/brain go bad. I didn't believe him. So, what's up with the supposedly "lifetime warranty on the system?" With that phone call, I decided to scap the Direct Drive and purchase a better system (Chamberlin). So, take this into consideration after reading this before spending your money on the safety of your garage and its contents! June 5, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by No Service I was impressed by the reviews so I bought it. Halfway through the installation I realized a part was missing. I didn’t want to UNDO the installation so I called Direct Drive to ask them to mail me the missing part. Phone was BUSY for over an hour. Finally, the call went through, but I reached an automated menu where I left my name and phone number. Well they didn’t call me back. I’m not surprised. I found a second phone number in the literature. Called that number but it was a DEAD number. I ended up buying a Chamberlain. The first thing I did was to call Chamberlain’s customer support to see that it actually does exists. Sommer/Direct Drive – Absolutely dreadful customer support. 1 STAR. April 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quiet and easy to install Purchased April 22 online. Arrived about a week later at my house. i inventoried the parts upon arrival. According to the installation manual I was missing a bolt. I called customer service but they were busy. I left a message and they called back within an hour. Turns out there are two installation methods and they stuck an insert in the packaging to address this. I missed this and there were no missing parts afterall. The installation was straightforward but involved many steps. The most challenging was installing the angle iron bracing. I thought the photo sensors were going to be the issue but a laser level took care of that pretty quick. I installed the opener by myself with the help of an A-frame ladder. Best advice is to watch the installation video several times. It gives all the info one needs. This opener is so much better than the 20 year old chain drive it replaced. It is quieter, the photo sensors don't act up, and takes up much less room. May 21, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Quiet Garage Door Opener I bought this opener because I have low clearance in my garage and I was anxious to get my Tundra in my garage. The old opener was just wide enough that the truck slide in under it and there was contact between the opener and the truck. The last thing I wanted was scrape the top of truck. With the new opener I have at least 2 inches of clearance. My garage in built into the house and is below two bed rooms. When the kids would come to visit and they would complain that the old chain driven door when opened early in the morning would shake the whole room. I wanted to tell them to go to the Holiday Inn down the street but was told in no uncertain terms that was unacceptable. This garage door opener is a most excellent compromise. Now I can sneak in and out of the house through the garage and no one knows. The opener was relatively easy to install when replacing an old opener, it took me about a half a day and I did it all by myself. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great garage door opener Installed this opener in about two hours by myself. Directions where very easy to follow. Very well engineered, it is extremely silent can't even hear it when it is running. All in all the best purchase for me and the price was right at The Home Depot. May 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by The best opener I ever showed Marius Marius loves Germans. This is made by Germans. Marius loves this. May 11, 2016
