This is the safest tool for pumpkin carving especially when used by kids. My 12 years old grandson enjoyed it while working on his pumpkin. The carver is operated by 4 AA batteries easy accessible on the bottom and strongly attached to the carver. The kit also provides 10 different carving patterns suggestions - half with simple and half with more tricky designs. Using the carver is simple, just push the button and carving head attached to body starts rotating and you can start carving.
The way as the carving bit operates causes releasing pumpkin juices and we found the paper pattern attached to the pumpkin not to be too practical. It became saggy. It would be easier to draw the pattern directly on the pumpkin and then to carve. Also, the instructions say, the carving should not be cut thru the wall. It suggests only removing or thinner or thicker layer of pumpkin wall. In that case the lit up candle placed inside of pumpkin quickly dies, because if we cover the pumpkin with the cutout “lid” the candle flame does not get oxygen. This tool is for use by all generations, no problems with dull knifes or knife injuries.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by rdub Makes Stenciling a pumpkin easier
I would prefer to use this tool to carve a pumpkin than a knife. It made following a stencil easy and it was much more fun to use. I did however have a false start. I tried to make the Patriots logo. I created my own stencil by making the logo black and white. My mistake happened because I made the logo to small. to make sure it was the logo and not my inability to use the tool correctly I used one of the stencils that were provided with the tool. I think it came out pretty good, I have attached a picture for you to have your own opinion.

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Matty Not what I expected
I purchased this thinking it would easily scroll through the face of a cleaned pumpkin. Not so. The tool has a small ball on the end of the shaft that cuts the pumpkin. It only cuts about 1/16th of an inch at a time. Maybe I need to buy a bit that has cutting edges all the way down the shaft. Guess it would be good for someone that wants to shave the pumpkin down to make it more textured. I had to go back to the Pumpkin Master little saws to carve it like I wanted.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by justbombs I'm very happy with this Dremel
I'm very happy with this Dremel. I chose it because it runs on AA batteries instead of proprietary rechargeable packs, for the same reason a lot of people prefer cameras that run on standard batteries. If you're in a hurry, you can put fresh standard batteries in and go, rather than have to wait for a recharge.
It's surprisingly quiet -- much quieter than my corded Dremel. And a lot more convenient. No having to set things up or find an extension cord to do a little task.

The battery powered caving tool preformed quite well. I will be able to use it on other projects. It was easy to use for carving pumpkins. The patterns worked well. I did need to use a knife to fine tune the carving. Overall it is a nice addition to my shop.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Artemis Great fun with the grandkids
I have a number of Dremel products and am very happy with all of them. This is a cordless tool which makes it easier to carve the faces into pumpkins. I've not used it for any other purpose, but I can see where it could be useful with other small jobs. It would be nice to have other accessories included in the kit, which is why I gave it 4 stars, but the templates are fun to use. It uses battery power, so you might want to think about rechargeables as it can run out of power before you finish the job (depending on the size of the pumpkin or gourd). I like Dremel products and this one is great fun!

Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Nate Needs more power
Dremel Products are usually really good. This one just doesn't have enough power to do the job. The AA batteries don't last long enough. Get the traditional corded Dremel and do the same thing with more power. You can download and print your own templates on the Internet.
