Be careful burning woods with glues, preservatives, or finishes as it can put off fumes that you should not breathe.

Answer:
You should not have a problem, burning composite wood. The depth of burn is controlled by the pressure you apply. The harder you press = the deeper the burn.

Answer:
I have not used this tool for wood..rather I used it on leather and suede for etching... but since it IS a woodburning, it should burn the wood.... the depth of the burn is controlled by your hand pressure and speed... the slower you go and deeper you press, the more intense the burn will be.

When installing the new cold tip, I always hold it with just my fingers and start to thread it in. You will only have a second or 2 to get it started, then it will be too hot to hold. you can finish threading it in with pliers. Get it snug, you don't need to tighten hard. I'm sure you are suppose to let the burner cool down before changing tips, but who has time for that. Just be cautious. Read Less

Answer:
The 1550 has tips that unthread from the end of the tool. Once the tool is unplugged and cooled off, you can unscrew the tip and replace it with another tip.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Best tool every had I wish I had age . I love it does everything that I want to do . April 25, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fantastic for wood burning! I've seen a lot of bad reviews about this, which surprised me because it's been a great tool for my wood burning projects. The ONLY issue I've ever had is that occasionally the bits will twist out, but that's to be expected if I'm twisting the dremel around. A pair of pliers allows me to twist it back in without unplugging and waiting for it to cool down--and I've never had a bit break in the tool. Sadly, after four years of use it's stopped heating up, but they were a good four years--hope to replace it with the same or better :) July 3, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Broken bit, no longer can use the tool I've had the Dremel tool for less than a month, purchased it from a small Mom and Pop craft store. After a few times of use, it started to loose its thread, there by making it very hard to swap bits. I then had a bit break off into the tool, and its in so deep I can't get it out. Stinks because I was enjoying the tool. May 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great bundle for a reasonable price I needed a woodburning tool for etching on suede boots. This worked like a charm.. I had previously been using a tool that only heated up to 750 degrees and was having a hard time burning into the suede, so I searched online for a higher heat level tool. The dremel burner heats up to 1050 degrees and was just perfect for my project. I used only the soldering tip out of the 5 different tips in the set, but I'm sure the other tips would work quite well too for their intended purpose. The tool heats up within a couple of minutes. I used mine for non stop 4 hours and had no issues with reduced heating at all. The little resting stand comes in very handy as well. December 24, 2013
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Useless instructions. I just bought this and brought it home. Opened the package to and reviewed the instructions but they dont tell you how to use it. I get that you plug it in, but no information about how long it takes to heat up, how to change the tips, or which tip is which. For a beginner these instructions are useless. January 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy to use I have never used a woodburning tool or etcher like this before, so I was a little nervous. It was very easy to figure out and use well. I had fun and would definitely recommend it. The only thing that I was a bit stuck on: the 5 tips in the package are not labeled, so I just had to use them all on scrap wood to see what kind of line each made. The instructions were pretty vague and basic, so I just had to go for it and figure it out myself. December 18, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Buy a different one. I got this as a Christmas gift and haven't used it at all until earlier this week. I was wood burning a buck into a piece of wood and I decided to switch out the tips. I thought I got it out successfully, but when I went to put the other tip in I couldn't get it in because the previous tip had broken off inside. The next day I tried glueing the tip in and letting it sit over night. The next morning I tried to unscrew it and it wouldn't come I tired everything and now the threads aren't there anymore. It is completely un usable. March 13, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Poor Quality Bits Render Tool Useless I bought this tool and had a fun afternoon playing around with it on some old scrap wood, learning the feel of it. When I picked it up today to use it a second time, it worked fine until I tried to swap the bits; the chisel-tip bit jammed in the threads and snapped off inside, so it's impossible to place a new bit in now and the tool is useless. I've tried unsuccessfully to remove the damaged bit from inside but have no way to pull or twist it out of such a small opening. Disappointing from the Dremel brand. February 1, 2014
