Be careful burning woods with glues, preservatives, or finishes as it can put off fumes that you should not breathe.

Answer:
You should not have a problem, burning composite wood. The depth of burn is controlled by the pressure you apply. The harder you press = the deeper the burn.

Answer:
I have not used this tool for wood..rather I used it on leather and suede for etching... but since it IS a woodburning, it should burn the wood.... the depth of the burn is controlled by your hand pressure and speed... the slower you go and deeper you press, the more intense the burn will be.

When installing the new cold tip, I always hold it with just my fingers and start to thread it in. You will only have a second or 2 to get it started, then it will be too hot to hold. you can finish threading it in with pliers. Get it snug, you don't need to tighten hard. I'm sure you are suppose to let the burner cool down before changing tips, but who has time for that. Just be cautious. Read Less

Answer:
The 1550 has tips that unthread from the end of the tool. Once the tool is unplugged and cooled off, you can unscrew the tip and replace it with another tip.

Customer Reviews

VersaTip Corded Tool Kit for Wood Burning, Soldering, Hot Knife Cutting, Cutting and Fusing Rope, and More is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 29.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Good Quality from Dremel Brand This is a multi tool that also works as a pyrographer (woodburning tool), not a professional pyrographer. It does not have a thermostat control neiher the thin incandescent wire pointer. Anyway, it is a great tool for home use and beginners like me, it comes with 4 pointers you can use for different shapes and purposes. Also it is cool to be able to solder metal pieces with it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Really nice wood burner I did wood burning when I was a kid and my mom got me interested in starting again. So I looked at Amazon and Home Depot's web sites to see which had the best deal for a decent wood burner. After reading the reviews I settled on the Dremel. It was the same price as Amazon but I could ship it free to the store so it won out. I've burned some logo's and a picture into small pieces of wood and it works great. The wood burner I had when I was a kid only had one tip so the option of changing the tips out gives you the ability to do some better detail. About the only thing that I didn't like was that the small tip bent a little and I believe it wasn't meant for wood and it did bend back so I'm understanding of it. Overall a great burner for someone new to wood burning.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Useless instructions. I just bought this and brought it home. Opened the package to and reviewed the instructions but they dont tell you how to use it. I get that you plug it in, but no information about how long it takes to heat up, how to change the tips, or which tip is which. For a beginner these instructions are useless.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Works great. Would recommend. Bought to make gifts with. Worked very well and created customized gifts for a very reasonable price. Would recommend to anyone. Have only done woodburning once before, but was very impressed with the results.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Bad Buy "This wood burning tool stopped working after 4 hours of use. Dremel offered to replace the tool but after considering shipping/handling, it was less hassle to buy a Weller tool that works..."

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic for wood burning! I've seen a lot of bad reviews about this, which surprised me because it's been a great tool for my wood burning projects. The ONLY issue I've ever had is that occasionally the bits will twist out, but that's to be expected if I'm twisting the dremel around. A pair of pliers allows me to twist it back in without unplugging and waiting for it to cool down--and I've never had a bit break in the tool. Sadly, after four years of use it's stopped heating up, but they were a good four years--hope to replace it with the same or better :)
