Should I get Medium or Small? I have 3 wires at 12 AWG each that will need to be connected together. The Min/Max capacity confuses me between the small and medium..
Asked by: Chris
Small will be very tight and hard to screw onto wires. Medium will seem too large, but will be much easier to fit in wires.

I have used the small ones for everything from landscape lighting fixtures to in-ground pet fence. The larger ones are useful for connecting more wires or bigger gauge wiring. I typically use the larger ones for connecting and splicing 12ga/12v landscape wire. The bigger wire needs a bigger connector to be secure. Buy the larger pack, you'll find tons of uses for them.

I was trying to use them for landscaping lights in my yard. The wire gauge is #12 but the insulation around the wire is larger than the "mediums" shield portion could accept, so I had a small bit of bare wire showing. So I tried the larger ones...nope, no good here either: now I can insert the wire insulated portion but the thread portion up inside the larger connectors was too large to "catch" the 12 gauge wire and tighten. If that wasn't bad enough, the instructions say there is no need to twist the wires together before inserting them. Not true because the stiff plastic shield prevents that from happening, and the strands that didn't want to push through just doubled back and stuck out. On top of that, they are ridiculously expensive. I am not sure what is better out on the market, but I am not a fan of these. Perhaps an inventor opportunity out there for someone..???

I bought these to repair my low voltage outdoor lighting connections which are prone to failure. Before this, I was using plain wire nuts and the liquid electric tape to seal the connections. That worked great. But after seeing so many people recommending these gel-filled wire nuts, I thought I would try them the next time the basic crimp connection failed. Well, these are very challenging. First, the goop that's inside the nuts has a consistency like grease so the wires never seem to "catch" with the inner spring of the wire nut and tighten down the way they do with non-filled versions. And to make matters worse, the goop squishes out onto your fingers making them slippery and making it even harder to twist the wire nuts down firmly. Finally, that goop doesn't come off your hands and fingers without a serious scrubbing - it is very persistent. I'm not giving up quite yet, but I'm about at my limit on these things.
