Does this water filtration get rid of real bad egg smell and taste completely?

I have city water and it's that bad.
Asked by: Goodwaterneeded
No, well water with high sulfates and iron will need to be treated by a water softener. This filter will only remove particles that have already precipitated out of the water.

Customer Reviews

Valve-in-head Whole House Water Filtration System is rated 3.7 out of 5 by 14.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good product and price but dripped at inlet & outlet I ordered this whole-house filter to replace an older model in a wellhouse that cracked in recent record low temperatures. I paid for rush shipping since I had no water, and installed with a bypass (see photo) in case this new filter failed. The canister, top valve, and relief valve fit and functioned well, and the directions were clear and easy to follow. Unfortunately, although I followed the directions and purchased and used a mounting bracket, I had a small leak at the inlet and outlet fittings. I had used thread tape and the 3/4 NPT PVC fitting as directed, but it doesn't seem that the housing threads have any taper, and the 3/4 fitting screwed all the way in and bottomed on the bracket rather than tightening in the threads first. After 3h for the PVC cement to dry, there was slow dripping at the fittings, and I had to cut out the filter and start over. The gentleman at Home Depot instructed me to try yellow, thicker thread tape, at least 2-3 wraps, and I bought a number of new PVC elbows and fittings and re-installed. Once again, the 3/4 fitting bottomed on the hanger bracket, I tightened it as much as possible without breaking, and after another 3h dry time, I was disappointed to find it leaked again (see photo). The third and final time I used a longer 3/4 fitting without the hex shoulder, used yellow thread tape again, and tightened as much as I dared. The bracket supports the weight of the filter but can pivot since it is not tight to the filter head. Third time there was no leak, but this was a lot of extra time, money, and PVC practice for me to get it to be water-tight. I contacted the Dupont customer service line before my third installation, and let them know I had no water at that time, but never received a call-back. Filter is easy to change and I would recommend, except for this fitting issue.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy at your own risk Bought this DuPont whole house sediment filter in January 2014 to replace an 8-year old unit of nearly identical design (different brand) that had started to leak at the bypass valve. We had a plumber install it while he replaced an old HW heater and pressure tank. The house is occupied about every other weekend and has well water with typical 40 psi pressure. We turn off the water when we're not there (drain in winter, just in case). Within 2 months of occasional weekend use, the filter housing (bowl) cracked after restoring water pressure to the house - water everywhere. Requested and received a warranty replacement filter housing from Protect Plus LLC without question, which I appreciated. However, the replacement filter housing cracked and began to leak after a couple of months of intermittent use.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Does the job, easy to install We bought one of these to put on our water main after a winter of worse-than-usual sediment issues in our tap water. It installed in about 20 minutes with nothing but a pipe cutter and wrench (Sharkbite fittings are wonderful) and seems to be doing the job after a few days of operation. A nice cheap/easy fix for a really annoying problem. The threads on the inlet/outlet aren't very well-machined and I did run into minor leak issues initially. The solution, at least so far, was to use a LOT of PTFE tape (~8-9 turns per fitting) on the fittings going in and make sure everything is as tight as possible. Once I did all that the leaks stopped, although I've still got a bucket under the thing until I see about a month of leak-free operation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Now! That's a water filter! Transparent body allows me to see particulate accumulation. Valve on top allows me to service water filter without breaking line or disrupting water flow. Rugged construction.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't buy this filter No matter how tight you make the fittings, it still leaks at both the inlet, and the outlet. The valve in the head reduces your pipe size to about 3/8 of an inch.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Just OK I think I expected too much from this filter but it was cheap enough that I figured I'd try this before spending a bunch more money on something else. I have city water that has must sort of algae smell to it. Doesn't taste real bad but you can smell it when you bring a glass to your face. This filter hasn't taken the smell away yet - it's better and is filtering out small particulate matter and I can see that in the clear plastic bowl but not entirely what I was looking for but at only $50 it amounts to a good "pre-filter"

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DuPont Filtration System This is our second set of filtration systems. Easy to install and it has been removing all the fine silt from our well water. The filters are also easy to change.
