Customer Questions & Answers

What is the height above ground of the discharge chute?

Asked by: chuck
Only about 12-14 inches. I put a plastic bucket under it and emptied it as necessary.

Does this work well for fall garden cleanup?

Most reviews address using this for wood. I was wondering how it will perform on fall garden waste like shredding corn stalks, sunflower stalks, old tomato plants, etc. My concern is these items are very fibrous and green and will get tangled in the blades like a rope. Please rely if you have used for this kind of waste.
Asked by: JReiss
I've only used mine about 1 1/2 hrs, but it has groundup fiberous sunflower stalks, raspberry branches, and a evergreen bush. It has worked well with only one jamb and that was my fault trying to force a forked branch in the chipper shoot. My tomatoes are still producing so I haven't tried them yet. The real test will be wet ropy materials, not done any yet.

is there a way to attach a bag to collect ?

I would like to use this as an industrial paper shredder. Will this work. Are there attachments for a collection bag of some sort?
Asked by: PCC1
Yes. A plastic bag can be attached with a bungee cord wrapped around the discharge chute but the material builds up under the chute pretty fast, so you have to keep adjusting it. It is much easier to put a bucket or box there and keep emptying it.

DuroStar 14 Amp Electric Chipper Shredder with 1.25 Diameter Feed. is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 86.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from DuroStar 14 Amp Electric Chipper Shredder Assembly was very easy I didn't even read the instructions. There was one issue with one of the handle twist bolt; The alignment is off and I can't get it installed. As time permits I will redrill the hole so as to align the hand bolt correctly. I've used the chipper for about 1 1/2 hrs so far. I've only experienced one jamb and that was a forked and twisted branch. I had to disassemble the entire top assy. and take a screw driver and hammer to drive it out. I would not consider this the machines fault. It was me trying to force a branch that was too big for the chipping slot. All and all this surpasses other chippers that I have owned in the past. I would recommend it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Tool This chipper does exactly what I need it to do. I bought it to grind up trimmings from my Palo Verde trees (I live in Arizona). These branches are very bushy and thorny, but the Eco-Shredder makes quick work of the bushy branches. Trick is to feed the large end first and make sure you push continuously as you get to the bushy ends. With a little pressure, the flared tube accepts the branches and they are sucked into the shredder by blades, turned by the 2 1/2 HP motor. The shredder will grind up any branches you can fit into the flared branch tube (about 1 3/8"x 2 1/2" usable opening opposite flared end). I would venture to guess that ANY kind of tree is fare game for the branch shredder. Another trick is to make sure to cut off any branches that are approaching right angles to the main branch. However, flexible secondary branches go into the tube easily with minimal pressure. The tool is VERY well built and easy to assemble. The blades inside are very heavy duty. The motor is very powerful for an electric motor, and shreds 1" limbs with ease. If a jam occurs, it is easily cleared by either turning the motor shaft with the included allen wrench (similar method to garbage disposal clear), or by removing the 3 quick disconnect screw knobs, removing the top assembly and clearing the stuck debris form the blade assembly. The motor is very quiet when not shredding. For mulch collection, I used a standard rectangular recycle bin (14" high) which fit nicely under the ejection chute once I removed the rubber extension. Keep in mind this is NOT as powerful as a gas chipper but will work very well for branches 1 1/4" and under. Also, I did not use the (very large) leaf hopper, but based on what the tool did to branches, dry leaves would be no problem I think. Sharp blades are a must; the blades are very heavy duty steel, and an extra set is included with the unit. I highly recommend this product. For the price it is a great value and does the job very well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This chipper allows us to transform yard "waste" into nutrient rich mulch. I have been composting for years, but shrub and tree branches don't break down fast enough. This chipper does the trick. Now none of our yard "waste" goes anywhere but is recycled back into my gardens. We love it. I could use one even more powerful, for larger branches, but I like the compact size. It is easy to move and store. Part of the directions is faulty. Do not cover the out chute with a plastic bag. That causes the motor to shut down. We catch the shredded material in an open cardboard box and then I can easily spread it on my flower/vegetable beds.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Chips and shreds all day long As noted in earlier reviews, the assembly booklet leaves something to be desired. Notwithstanding that, this product was easy to assemble. You put the wheels on, the handle and the hopper, and that is it. The all steel construction is a plus as is the heavy duty vinyl hopper. The electric motor is very powerful. It chips wood into tiny bits and shreds leaves into very small pieces. It took a bit of experimenting to do the chipping and shredding without causing a jam. Once you get a good rhythm going, the jams are few and far between. For example, the machine does not like acorns. But, the ease of taking the hopper off, and the tool to manually turn the blades, made quick work of any jam. So far I've shredded tree branches; leaves; milkweed stalks; various flower stalks; and garden debris. I use a five gallon bucket to catch the chipped/shredded material. This machine is just fine for a quarter acre suburban yard with trees, flowers and bushes, and a vegetable garden. This would be a very worthwhile purchase for anyone who wants to create their own mulch.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from We really like the Durostar Eco-Shredder Model ES1600 As other reviewers have mentioned the assembly manual was not very helpful It said nothing about assembling the "axles" to the frame. But, there were not that many parts so anyone with any mechanical smarts should be able to assemble it without a manual. If you clog up the top hopper the manual says to unscrew three knobs to remove the hopper. Actually, you need to unscrew five knobs and remove the handle to remove the hopper. We ran it for about 5 hours to reduce a big pile of raspberry and grape vines, sunflower stalks plus a few hardwood branches into a much smaller pile of mulch. The machine only stalled once when I was feeding an inch thick hardwood branch into the side chute. It never jammed or clogged even when I was feeding multiple vines in the side chute and my wife was feeding leaves and twigs in the top hopper at the same time. All the material we were putting in was Thoroughly DRY. We had to frequently rake away the mulch from under the machine before it built up enough to cover the vents on the motor. After running it for 5 hours some of the screws had become loose and one had fallen out, which I later found in the mulch (but not the washers). I would suggest checking it every hour for loose screws. When I later took it apart to clean I found a large crack on the inside of the side chute, probably a broken weld. (Picture 2) It doesn't look like it will impact the operation unless I try to feed one-inch hardwood branches again. But I may want to get it welded sometime. I have not tried warranty service because I would probably have to pay to ship the heavy steel hopper back to the repair center. The only other complaint I have is that the short power cord is just long enough to get tangled under the wheels when I pull it, so I used some cable ties to tie it up to the frame. (Picture 3)

Rated 4 out of 5 by from really gets rid of yard clutter wood chippers are pretty pricey so was glad to find one under $250. made a quick job out of mulching my overgrown lilac bush. blade got stuck once cutting one of the larger branches but it's built well enough to be able to undo 3 bolts and take the top of the unit off to get to the blade for clearing or replacing when needed. much better built than one I had previously, this one has plastic parts too but the main case is metal with metal bolts. won't do 2" diameter branches but pretty good value for what it can do.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from easy to use, works great Love it. I have a million sticks and it chews them up no problem. The only time it jammed was when I was shredding some of my wetter compost. However, it was super easy to clean the jam. Since then it has been great!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works well and as advertised. Works great on hedge trimmings and small palms. The bigger palms load it down easily. It will jam up if you dump to much in the hopper at one time, but it is easy to clear.
