Customer Questions & Answers

What is the height above ground of the discharge chute?

Asked by: chuck
Only about 12-14 inches. I put a plastic bucket under it and emptied it as necessary.

Does this work well for fall garden cleanup?

Most reviews address using this for wood. I was wondering how it will perform on fall garden waste like shredding corn stalks, sunflower stalks, old tomato plants, etc. My concern is these items are very fibrous and green and will get tangled in the blades like a rope. Please rely if you have used for this kind of waste.
Asked by: JReiss
I've only used mine about 1 1/2 hrs, but it has groundup fiberous sunflower stalks, raspberry branches, and a evergreen bush. It has worked well with only one jamb and that was my fault trying to force a forked branch in the chipper shoot. My tomatoes are still producing so I haven't tried them yet. The real test will be wet ropy materials, not done any yet.

is there a way to attach a bag to collect ?

I would like to use this as an industrial paper shredder. Will this work. Are there attachments for a collection bag of some sort?
Asked by: PCC1
Yes. A plastic bag can be attached with a bungee cord wrapped around the discharge chute but the material builds up under the chute pretty fast, so you have to keep adjusting it. It is much easier to put a bucket or box there and keep emptying it.

Manual & Parts: I was a little disappointed with the manual for this shredder. There is no parts lists in the manual. The images were very small and did not show what hardware to use when assembling the shredder. Had to figure it out on my own. It was trial and error where all the screws and bolts went to. Then I find a plastic part with a bolt, washer, and nut. There is no instructions where it may go. I will be calling the help line on Monday morning. We had one very similar to this one and it lasted several years before the motor gave out. I have not had a chance to use it yet, but if it holds up like the other one, I will be happy with the use of it.

I read the reviews and used common sense - no rocks or wet leaves in the chipper. The first pinky-sized trimming I put down the top jammed it right away, so I started feeding everything but leaves into the branches chute. This worked better and I was able to make a couple gallons of chips before I ran into more trouble. The ground wasn't completely even where I was working, and before I realized what was happening the legs had bent the yellow chipping housing itself, so that the blades began hitting the side of the housing. I think this might have fried the motor because after disassembling and replacing the blades, it still hits the side and now the jam detection trips if I put anything larger than a leaf in there. After five hours of work for four gallons of chips, I'm ready to return it and get my money back.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from DuroStar 14 Amp Electric Chipper Shredder Assembly was very easy I didn't even read the instructions. There was one issue with one of the handle twist bolt; The alignment is off and I can't get it installed. As time permits I will redrill the hole so as to align the hand bolt correctly. I've used the chipper for about 1 1/2 hrs so far. I've only experienced one jamb and that was a forked and twisted branch. I had to disassemble the entire top assy. and take a screw driver and hammer to drive it out. I would not consider this the machines fault. It was me trying to force a branch that was too big for the chipping slot. All and all this surpasses other chippers that I have owned in the past. I would recommend it.

This is the biggest piece of junk I have ever been ripped off on. I purchased this item on Jan 3, with delivery receipt on Jan 5. I used it twice. The first time was just to make sure it was not broken out of the box. The 2nd time was on April 2nd. I added leaves to the machine and apparently there was a rock in them. (I was unaware all rocks had to be manually removed from the debris pile. As a matter of fact I found nothing in the directions stating a rock could not go into the machine accidentally. And quite frankly I had no intention of sorting leaves before throwing them into a machine.) The rock actually broke the blade of the machine. The blade itself is a large, thick metal blade, which in my opinion should not have broken while shredding leaves. In any event I called Home Depot to get a return within the 90 days BUT this is a third party vendor with a 30 day return policy so the Home Depot does not stand behind their products to insure customer satisfaction. I was refused a refund. I am done shopping at the Home depot and I hope no one buys this piece of junk. I attached some pics of the broken blade. Ridiculous isn't it?

The first two had bad power switches. the last 2 had the v blade break on the second day of using it. The only reason i haven't returned the 4th is because I had a mccullogh exactly like this for 14 years and the although the old girl failed after 14 years in the california sunshine, the blade was still good and I traded out the V-blades. Don't buy this machine until they improve the power switch and make stronger blades.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Tool This chipper does exactly what I need it to do. I bought it to grind up trimmings from my Palo Verde trees (I live in Arizona). These branches are very bushy and thorny, but the Eco-Shredder makes quick work of the bushy branches. Trick is to feed the large end first and make sure you push continuously as you get to the bushy ends. With a little pressure, the flared tube accepts the branches and they are sucked into the shredder by blades, turned by the 2 1/2 HP motor. The shredder will grind up any branches you can fit into the flared branch tube (about 1 3/8"x 2 1/2" usable opening opposite flared end). I would venture to guess that ANY kind of tree is fare game for the branch shredder. Another trick is to make sure to cut off any branches that are approaching right angles to the main branch. However, flexible secondary branches go into the tube easily with minimal pressure. The tool is VERY well built and easy to assemble. The blades inside are very heavy duty. The motor is very powerful for an electric motor, and shreds 1" limbs with ease. If a jam occurs, it is easily cleared by either turning the motor shaft with the included allen wrench (similar method to garbage disposal clear), or by removing the 3 quick disconnect screw knobs, removing the top assembly and clearing the stuck debris form the blade assembly. The motor is very quiet when not shredding. For mulch collection, I used a standard rectangular recycle bin (14" high) which fit nicely under the ejection chute once I removed the rubber extension. Keep in mind this is NOT as powerful as a gas chipper but will work very well for branches 1 1/4" and under. Also, I did not use the (very large) leaf hopper, but based on what the tool did to branches, dry leaves would be no problem I think. Sharp blades are a must; the blades are very heavy duty steel, and an extra set is included with the unit. I highly recommend this product. For the price it is a great value and does the job very well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from This chipper allows us to transform yard "waste" into nutrient rich mulch. I have been composting for years, but shrub and tree branches don't break down fast enough. This chipper does the trick. Now none of our yard "waste" goes anywhere but is recycled back into my gardens. We love it. I could use one even more powerful, for larger branches, but I like the compact size. It is easy to move and store. Part of the directions is faulty. Do not cover the out chute with a plastic bag. That causes the motor to shut down. We catch the shredded material in an open cardboard box and then I can easily spread it on my flower/vegetable beds.
