Answer:
The hose for the "attachments" is rather short (perhaps 2 feet). This limits the usefulness of the attachment for vacuuming furniture or shutters/blinds (unless you can manage to hold the entire machine up or set the machine up on a secure surface near where you are trying to use the attachment).

The hose itself only stretches to a couple of feet. However; the detachable wand/head is probably about 3-4 feet in length in addition to the hose. It can be a little difficult to use until you get used to it.

Hi, this is Ryan from Dyson Customer Service.
The DC24 has a total reach of 28.72 feet including both the power cord and the hose. The hose itself when fully extended measures 8.72 feet. The hose can be used with the on-board tools that are included with the machine to clean hard to reach spaces.

The vacuum comes with a pet hair attachment and a crevice/brush multi-tool. These attachments attach to the vacuum's hose. There is no separate canister or handvac that you can separate and use to clean the car. The whole unit will have to come with you.

You'd have to take the whole unit, on the bright side though, its really light weight. You do get two hose attachments, one is a mini version of the brush on the vacuum, which works awesomely on couches. The other is just a little attachment with optional bristles on it.

Its compact enought that taking the whole unit to the car wouldnt be a big deal. However the way you put the hose on, Im not sure car vaccuming would be easy. The handle becomes the tube and its not bendy.

The DC24 does not have a smaller detachable unit so if you wanted to use it to clean your car you would need to move the entire machine. However, the DC24 is our lightest upright vacuum, weighing just 11 pounds, so it will be easy to move.

Answer:
Just based on my limited experience, I would not use it on a shag because the beater bar is smaller than an avg vac, but it's also extra sensitive. There are sensors in the bottom that will stop the brush spinning if anything wraps around it (or the vac perceives that's what happened) and you have to turn it off, clear it, reset and try again. My thought is that shag would trigger the reset constantly.

Hi, this is Ryan from Dyson Customer Service.
Because carpet types vary so much we recommend that you contact the manufacturer of your specific carpet for guidance regarding care of maintenance. While our machines are suitable for most household floor types it would be in your best interest to confirm with the manufacturer.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by I'm a Believer I was skeptical 6+ years ago when my husband brought this vacuum home, but I ended up loving it. It's always done a great job keeping up with 3 dogs, 2 cats and 3 kiddos. I would recommend this brand again and again. I've never worried about whether or not it was getting deep down in my carpets, clean up was more than reasonable and so easy. It has only been in the last few months that my poor, old machine has hit the end of its life, and I was bummed when it did, but I went out and replaced it with yet another Dyson. I tried every brand under the sun and was replacing vacuums way too frequently before purchasing my Animal. Thank you Dyson for making a product worth coming back to. I will never own another brand again! August 5, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Picks up crazy amount of fur!! Feels cheap Easy to put together. Feels cheap. BUT picks up so much! Easy to dump the debris. Would recommend and/or buy again. September 24, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great experience I've had my vacuum since 2007 and it still works. Any problem I had always minor was covered with no hassle. JUst ordered a new Pet vacuum because I've beat the DC17 up pretty badly. Love this companies products and ethics. June 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect for my needs I have a dog and a three bedroom condo, and this vacuum is perfect for me. It's super powerful and able to pick up all of the hair from my rugs while also being compact and easy to maneuver and store. It's easy to empty and switch vacuum heads for specific cleaning needs as well. I've had this for five years, and it still performs like it's new. I was reluctant to drop this much money on a vacuum cleaner, but it's proven to be worth every penny. Love it! July 9, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My First Dyson!! I bought this DC17 Animal back in 09, although it has its scars to show this vacuum has outlasted any vacuum I have ever had!! The biggest problem I had was I went through the belts! At least one a year, however they were covered for many years. I have a Saint Bernard, they shed 365 days a year!! This vacuum kept up and kept going!! Now it makes a load squeaky noise when trying to vacuum using the brush, but the suction it still awesome and I can use the hose without a problem!! I upgraded early of 2015, with another Dyson. However I still have this as old faithful! Not giving her up until she quits completely!! January 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Dyson Vacuums are the best product!!! I bought this vacuum back in 2007. Today the equipment is still running as new. Excellent quality and performance. The investment in this appliance is fully paid off!!! Congratulations to Dyson your products are awesome. That's why you are leaders in the market. March 26, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by My Favorite Had this vacuum six years and was my first Dyson. We have two labs and I used that vacuum daily. It was so easy to use and had a flat front so it would go under my kitchen cabinets. It was light enough to use on the stairs and the attachments were just "simple". I wish I could still get this vacuum. February 12, 2016
