I bought this unit and the DC28 at the same time to cover all possible vacuuming needs... and they certainly have. I used to have the Root6 (the first Dyson hand held) and that had some power/reliability issues... have not seen any problems so far w/ the newer DC31 model. Even on regular power setting it gets everything up and does actually last ~10mins.
On high-power it really sucks (in a good way!) for about 5 mins. The pet attachments are handy if you have shedding pets - love this unit. The colour is awesome too.

I cannot say enough about this handheld vacuum. It's not only by far the best handheld vac I've ever owned (I've had a few) it's probably the best single item I've ever bought!! When I first bought it I thought it was rather expensive but on an impulse I got it anyway. I have never regretted it.
I use this thing several times a day around my place. It's strong, reliable and a joy to use. It's easy to clean out and does everything I ever need it to do. It's the perfect thing when you don't want to drag the full-size vacuum cleaner out for smaller jobs or jobs in tight corners. For the car it's the best.
Just love it!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by reallyhappy great product
Had this for about a year now. I use it every day..we have two dogs and a bird and hardwood floors keep no secrets. Some people have expressed disappointment in the battery life. The suction is so quick to startup and strong that you don't need to keep your finger on the trigger for extended periods..point at the problem and pull the trigger, then release a few seconds later-you don't need the motor to run continually for minutes. I don't use it to clean house but do touch up and or clean up an accident...in this context the product is exceptional. Well made and easy to use. Just put it in the charger when you're done!

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by ladybug Dyson Animal handheld
We love our handheld, especially the strength of the suction. Often I use it in places where I would usually use my upright just because it does a better job. The only two complaints that I have it that the Animal doesn't come with a mounting system, which would be more convenient. I know other handhelds have mounting systems that also charge while they are in the holder. Also, the strip of fabric that is on the motorized brush bar that helps pick up pet hair, etc came off within a few weeks of use. Other than that, I don't know what I would do without my Animal handheld!

I'm conflicted. The suction isn't as good as I thought it would be, especially for the price, but it does work well for what I want to use it for. The battery is what I am not happy with. It's not that it only lasts about 10 minutes. I read all about it and I understood the length of battery life when I ordered it. It's the battery went bad only a 6 weeks after I bought my handheld and I had to buy a new battery. It was very upsetting that it my handheld worked fine one day and 2 days later nothing. I do want to mention that I am very happy with my Dyson upright vacuum.

Very disappointed in life of battery per use - 10 minutes is not enough time for me to clean under bird cages and around litter boxes - very inconvenient waiting between charges - item is way over priced for what amount of time allowed between battery charges - I am returning it tomorrow and looking at another brand for longer vacuum time whether cordless or with a cord - Dyson needs to improve this item even if it has to allow more vacuum time with a extension cord attached while using it - I love my DC18 upright, but this product is just not worth the money

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by 2dogs4parrots The Handheld for 2 Shedding Dogs and 4 Parrots
Strongest suction we've seen in a rechargeable. Goes at highest strength for a good 20 minutes straight. Recharges quickly. Attachments designed well for spot-on, thorough quickie cleaning. Easy on the wrist and fun to use.
Direction of exhaust causes intended peripheral pickup to blow around. The only reason we'd give it a 4.
Compared to other handhelds in consideration of our intensive usage factor, we give it a 5.

I was so happy with my other Dyson vacuum cleaners, I thought this would be a great buy. Wow, was I disappointed. It runs for about 2 seconds, then cuts off. It will turn back on, but I am constantly having to depress the switch. This makes suctioning of the dirt a very time consuming process. I agree with the other reviews re: the time that it runs before the battery runs out. I thought maybe mine was faulty, but I see that there are many others with the same issues. If I had it to do all over again, I would certainly not purchase. Dyson has a long way to go on this model.
