Answer:
Yes, Woody. you will need to remove the tip guard to cut a tree that is greater in diameter than the length of your bar.
The tip guard is a safety device intended to prevent kick-back. Echo recommends that it be reinstalled when larger cuts are no longer necessary.

Answer:
Depends on the bar length. Oregon has a chain finder. The saw also has a sticker on it telling you what chain you need.

18 in. 45cc Professional Grade Chainsaw is rated 4.5 out of 5 by 57.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Leatherface(Texas Chainsaw Massacre movie) would be proud to have a saw like this one. This saw is awesome! It started on the first pull every time. I cut oak 18-inches with ease. The actual saw isn't too heavy and doesn't eat gas too fast.

I am a 55 year old woman so that is important. It is sometimes hard for me to start, a compression release would be a nice addition to this chain saw. I have used Echos for years, I decided to upgrade to a 45cc instead of the 40cc ones I have used in the past since it is becoming harder for me to do the work. The added power with only a slight gain in weight is perfect, makes the job easier.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Performer! I went back and forth with saw brands and am pleased to report I made the right choice with Echo. I am more than happy with this saw and look forward to using it every time! Easy start, not too loud and runs strong thru the cut. Great weight to power ratio yet small enough to use for hours. I'm very happy with the cs450 and like the auto style air filter and access a lot.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from the perfect midsize saw Got a smoking deal on the 450-20" and the 590-20" as a package deal, to finally upgrade from my trusted old 1972 Mac 10-10 auto, and no regrets. The 450 is well balanced, well built, lightweight, and ran & started very well as delivered. But it seemed it was being held back. I ran some of my 32:1 lucas semi synthetic mix, ditched the carb limiters and fine tuned it running hard into tamarack.....Whoa what a saw this is now. There is no stopping it, fast cutting and easy to handle with tons of power after the retuning. I planned on just using it for trimming and limbing my firewood, but I found myself using it for bucking logs all the way up to 20" diameter. It runs right up there with 55cc saws. Love this little monster saw.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Awesome saw- powerful and hungry!! After a recent tree clearing experience, it became obvious that my 14" Echo saw just wasn't the right choice for large projects that involve numerous 18-20" diameter trees. I considered a couple of "cheaper" saws, but after reading many reviews and spec sheets, decided to maintain my brand loyalty to the one who has never let me down. I chose this particular saw because the 45cc motor would have plenty of power to turn an 18" chain, as it usually is spec'd out for a 20" bar. And right that was! This saw has plenty of power, and never bogs down when you push the limits. A couple of features that I found real nice are the pump primer which delivers fuel right to the carb., and makes startup easy, and the location and quality of the air intake filter. The filter is more out of the way of wood shavings then on other saws, and the filter itself is much more like a K&N automotive application then a typical cheesy 2-stroke filter. Great investment, and well worth the price!!!
