Howdy Jeremy,
Yes you can put a metal blade on. You need to have a conversion kit such as this to do that:

Are the handles on this model defective? How to stop the handle from sliding?

I bought one of these about a month ago, and on first use noticed the handle was constantly moving...the tightening bold could not be tightened enough to stop the handle from sliding/rotating during use. When I went back to the store, noticed all of the units (about six on display) had the same problem. Other than that really liked the unit, but found it impossible to use because the handle could not be tightened down enough, and the vibrations of use caused the handle to constantly slide/rotate.. Is this a design flaw, or did the store in question just have them constructed wrong?

Hi jmac,
Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with your Echo.
The handle sometimes needs a spacer/grommet that goes between the plastic handle and the metal shaft. Without the spacer, the bolt will not be able to tighten the handle securely.
The spacer sometimes slips out of position when the trimmers are in their shipping boxes. Carefully inspect the shaft to find the spacer located along the shaft. It isusually at the bottom of the shaft. Slide it into position where you want to locate the handle, position the handle onto the spacer and tighten the handle bolt.
I hope this works for you.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.2 out of 5 by 811 reviewers.
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Somewhat disappointing 2 complaints: the EZ load head is a joke. I'm having to stop every 5-10 minutes to replace the strings, which this trimmer goes thru like crazy. Do yourself a favor and either buy a model that has the traditional bump feed head already, or go ahead and buy the replacement head for this model. Second, it stalls out everytime I try to edge with it and there's no edger attachment available for this model. Should have done my research I guess. On the plus side, it starts very easily and trims just fine in between the frequent stops to replace string. June 10, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pleased with trimmer. Satisfied with this trimmer after using it twice. Could not use it under the benches very well due to the curved shaft. Otherwise please with performance and weight. June 28, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by nice, light trimmer very nice light easy to start trimmer I've used so far. Ididn'tcare much for the way the string loads only because it gets stuck in thehead & you need pliars to change it. other downfall wasthe curved shaft Iwas constantly reaching & it bothered myback. I havea lot of land so it was returned for a straight shaft. good for someone with little trimming needed June 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good for light duty applications It's a good buy for light duty use, I've had no real problems with it so far. I finally gave up on trying to nurse my old Ryobi along and bought this one. I was looking for something a little more heavy duty but this one was the only model the local Home Depot had at the time. The short shaft is nice for around buildings, trees, bushes, etc. but becomes a pain working in areas where you need to reach. I'm not crazy about the head and replacing the individual lengths of line. When you use it near concrete/asphalt surfaces you go through a lot of string. May 31, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by fliranzo Very Good Trimming maching, Recoment it to Any Body. June 24, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Not Sure Yet Seems to have decent power. It does get bogged down some with heavier/thicker grass and weeds. The concept of the self-feeding string is good, but it has not been perfected yet. I have gone through over 20 feet of string in less than half an hour. Any time the string hits something tough, it pulls more string out. There is a cutting blade that trims the string when it gets too long. So you lose string every time you utilize the trimmer. I purchased a replaceable trimmer head with fixed blade/string. Hopefully it works. June 14, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by ECHO weed eater This is the best weed eater for the money. !st one I bought 9 years ago and I am just now having trouble with it so I bought another like it and I LOVE it. Easy to operate and light enough it doesn't hurt my arms to use it for an hour or more weed eating. Great quality product! June 21, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Inconvenient This is a piece of junk. No clue how it gets a good rating. You use a 8" piece of cutting string that you feed through the holes. No Spool of string. The string breaks after 1 minute of use. After it breaks you have to stop, flip it over and pull the string through the middle to get the remainder small piece out before you feed a new piece from the outside in. It came with a bag of 10 and I used them all and only got half my trimming done. One of the holes you feed the string through is clogged and doesn't work. Junk Junk Junk. I'm bring it back today.
