Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by UtClimber Great features except for small debris shield
This has been a very reliable trimmer. Starts easily, has plenty of power. The debris shield is too small as another customer noted. It picks everything up and slams it against your shins. If you change the contact point of the string versus what you are cutting, which would be to rotate your body so only the right side of the cutter head makes contact, it pulls itself into the material you are cutting too rapidly or if you are against a fence, it pulls itself into the fence rapidly. It needs a larger debris shield, I don't care if the current shield meets ANSI standards or not.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Green Grass Hopper Top trimmer for the value on the market.
Echo has had the top trimmer for the value on the market for many years. Durable and low maintenance, and the loading of the head is way ahead of the others. I have used many kinds over the years, but none better than this new Echo.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by RonTinTex Very Powerful a Little Overkill for Average Home Owner
This is an awesome professional grade trimmer. It is fairly heavy but comfort in usage in these Echos really comes down to balance. The SMR 266 is balanced well and has MORE than enough power and torque for most home owners. But the SMR 230 is slightly lighter and defiantly more perfectly balanced so is more comfortable and easy to operate for long periods at a time. If you need to cut tall VERY thick weeds and grass often then the SMR 266 is the machine to buy. If you need a powerful trimmer with superb balance and comfort then the SMR 230 is the better buy. Either choice is well worth the money.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by jasontx nice piece of equipment
Just bought one today, starts up very easily and purrs like a kitten. Been going easy on it to break it in and it effortlessly powered through my tall grass at low rpms. Love the speed feed head, very easy to spool up. Only thing is the line that came on the unit seemed very brittle, used the entire spool up on my yard. I purchased the 250 foot replacement line for it and hope it will be a bit more durable. All in all I'm impressed with it, I didn't mind spending little more on a reputable brand that will hopefully last for years to come unlike the troy built it is replacing that still looks brand new haha.

For years we bought the cheapest trimmers we could find. For years I hated weed eating constantly changing string or not able to get the trimmer started etc. I stopped using gas altogether and used electric for a long time, but the cords were lots of trouble and limited. The string also had to be changed often. So far we LOVE our real trimmer. We had upgraded to a commercial grade mower years ago.....never had any regrets...not sure why I waited so long for a REAL TRIMMER...

I needed a good reliable trimmer to help maintain the property that I own, which includes quite a lot of 4 rail horse fence. I had heard good things about the Echo line of trimmers and with the amount of use I want something that would last.
I stopped at a local lawn equipment dealer and looked at the Echo Srm 266 and the Stihl line of trimmers. They seemed to be competively priced with the Echo winning by a few dollars. The deciding factor was the 5 year homeowner warranty. Stihl did not offer that. I am somewhat concerned with the 4mix engine and wanted the simplicity of a two stroke.
In using the trimmer, I brought it home and the first thing I did was remove the plug on the carburator so I could adjust the high speed mixture. (there are plenty of video to watch on the net to do this). Mixed some premium no ethonahl fuel and started it up. It runs fantastic, the effort required to start it is minimal. My wife can start this without a problem. In using the trimmer it has plenty of power for what I am using it for. It idles fantastic, and starts easily when shut off. I have fought the cheaper homeowner trimmers getting them started and then if you shut it off good luck getting it running again.
I really like the head and advancing the line is easy. If you use grass or some other suitable surface to "bump" the head it should last a long time. And then once all the line was used I was amazed at how easy it was to reload the line. Nice feature Echo!
Now for the cons, This is a good sized trimmer and it needs a shoulder strap. The Stihl comes with a nice stap and a nice mount. This is easily fixed, but it should come from the factory that way. A very small con for a tool that makes my chore of trimming much easier.
