difference between Echo 266 / 266S and 266T String trimmers

Every craftsman, and Homelite gardening tool I have is gradually getting replaced by ECHO! My string trimmer, Homelite ST175 just died, and I'm looking at Echo for a replacement. Can someone please detail the difference between Echo 266, Echo 266S, and Echo 266T?
Asked by: john
The three trimmers you mentioned all have the same engine. The difference is the SRM266 is the base model which is a very good unit. I have the SRM266S due to the solid steel drive shaft which helps with acceleration, weight and I believe vibration. The SRM266T has a lower gear head for a slightly slower RPM at the trimmer head. This helps when using a steel cutterhead for brush. I would strongly recommend non ethanol fuel in any 2 cycle equipment.

Can this model be used as an edger for flower beds, etc...? Can the head be rotated to turn into an edger?

Asked by: PrincessKate
Yes, this model does cut an edge pretty well. The trimmer can be rotated in order to cut a horizonal edge along walks or flower beds.

How hard is the pull effort on the 266T to start as compared to the SRM-225? Do you have to pull harder than on the SRM-225 because the 266T has a bigger engine or is the "pull effort" about the same?
Asked by: MIke
ECHO engines are designed to start very easily. However, the SRM-225 and SRM-266T feature the i-30 starting system which reduces the starting effort by 30%.

Can you run syynthetic oil in it

Asked by: Keith
ECHO POWER BLEND OIL, is manufactured exclusively for ECHO, Inc. and meets the (ISO) International Standards Organizations highest performance rating of ISO-L-EGD for Air Cooled 2 Stroke oils and is JASO M345 FD REGISTERED. Years of research and testing have resulted in an oil that is fully compatible with fuels containing 10% ethanol and can be used in all air - cooled, outdoor power equipment 2-Stroke engines at 50:1 ratio. ISO-L-EGD and JASO M345 FD rated oils must be used with a mid-grade (89 octane) or premium gasoline in all 1997 and newer engines. Always look for the JASO M345 FD square logo and registration number to ensure you are using the highest quality 2-stroke oil for your ECHO product.

Came completely assembled just needed to add fuel and it fire up the second pull. This is my third Echo trimmer and it appears to be the best. I've also owned Stihl and Husky and have nothing bad to say of them. Echo is my favorite brand of outdoor lawn equipment. I own approximately a dozen of different pieces of Echo because of the great performance and how easy it is to purchase replacement parts on-line. The SRM266S was my choice because of the steel drive shaft. As Echo states, it reduces weight, improves acceleration and I believe it reduces vibration which helps my RA hands. I always use non-ethanol fuel and now RED Armor which eliminates Carb problems even over the winter. John 3:16

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful Unit Used an Echo SRM-2450 for 20 years (residential ). Trouble free. Carburetor needed replacement.Instead I purchased the SRM-266. Went with the larger unit thinking more power, which is true. With more power the unit is a little heavier (12.1 lbs vs 12.3 lbs). The throttle handle is larger and has a trigger lockout that the SRM-2450 didn't have. This creates an awkwardness and the average size hand has trouble gripping it. Due to that, this unit works you a little harder giving the appearance it is much heavier. Overall I like it and the extra power is good. Starts on second pull consistently. Haven't adjusted the carb as of yet (recommended after 2nd tank of fuel).I think I'll get good service from this unit, as I did with the previous. I just need to bulk up a little to handle the awkwardness. At 73 this may be a problem. Might have to get the wife to do the brush cutting.

Overall this is a good product;however, I am not satisfied with the octagonal design of the head. when you are trimming in tight areas, close to something solid like stone of concrete and touch the head while trimming it creates quite harsh handling. If the head were round this would be a nearly perfect machine

It Replaced a 11 year old Shindaiwa 242 and I have to say it's every bit as powerful and IMO has more torque than the 242 does. The fuel tank is slightly smaller than the 242 but I'm not worried about that. Weight is very similar as well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excellent Replacement for my old T242! I bought this unit as a replacement for my 10 year old Shindaiwa T242. I've had it for nearly a month now and I have to say I've been very pleased with it. Similar weight and more torque than the 242. Very pleased with my purchase. Got my Dad wanting one now too!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Wanted an Echo quality product..... and got it! I wanted a quality line trimmer to replace a Ryobi model that wasn't running reliably. With doing research didn't like that many trimmers use a cable linkage between the engine and the head - the cables require maintenance. Have had good experiences with Echo and tend to spend a bit more to get a higher model as it pays in the end. Liked this model due to the solid shaft instead of a cable drive. Used it for a few weeks and starts very well, looks well designed, line trimmer head design is interesting and is easy to reload with line. Only small criticism is the weight of the unit but it seems proportional to the extra power this unit has. Would buy again and would recommend to others.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from New fan! Years ago I had a straight shaft Craftsman trimmer that actually lasted me for quite a while. I decided to purchase a good brand and went with a curved shaft Stihl. After about 3 years of using that and cussing it every time I used it, I decided to go back to a straight shaft and see what else is out there. I'm pretty serious about researching items (just ask my wife) and in the end decided on the Echo SRM-266S and I couldn't be happier. It fires right up and handles amazing! I just also upgraded my chainsaw and bought and echo. Great products!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful tool for precise trimming This SRM-266T is the second one I have purchased. The first one I owned for a mowing business and I sold the trimmer as part of a package deal. I've been kicking myself ever since. So when I moved to an acreage and needed a trimmer I definitely bought one of these again. It starts very easily using the procedure in the manual. It has plenty of power and doesn't bog down when trimming. Other trimmers I've used would scalp because the trimmer would bog, slow down and let the line droop, but I've never had that problem with this Echo. It has a powerful engine and it has a larger gearbox at the trimmer head, allowing a higher torque gear ratio which keeps the line from slowing down even in thicker grass.
