Answer:
The gear reduction is the difference between engine speeds, and the attachment speeds. Gear reduction ratios are used when the high engine speeds need to be converted to lower speed torque. Torque referred to the twisting motion of the attachment which is used needed to drive the attachment under load.

Answer:
The SRM-280T and SRM-280 feature the same engine displacement and performance. The SRM-280T has a high torque gear case that will provide 50% more torque at the cutting head. The advantage to the 50% more torque is the engine will not be put under as heavy of a load in demanding applications. The SRM-280 does not have the extra torque, but it has a faster head speed. 2 Cycle 28.1 cc Straight Shaft Gas Trimmer is rated 4.4 out of 5 by 55.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from Excllent Trimmer I made the switch to Echo with the purchase of the PAS kit about 7 years ago at a smaller home - for the last 2 years the same kit has helped me manage my 1/4 acre lot beautifully, but it was time to upgrade. I ended up going with this trimmer and could not say better things about it. The speed loading of line is great, the engine starts easily and powers through thick weeds, and i especially like how when idling the head does not spin. My only grip would be it has more vibration than the PAS it replaced, but I expected that given the larger engine. I bought the matching edger as well and am just as happy. Worth the extra money by far. Be sure to register!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Powerful, but one little annoyance I always bought the 265s until their power seemed to be getting worse and worse year after year. I bought a couple of 280s to try out to see if I should make the switch since they pretty much weigh the same. The 280 feels 2x more powerful than the 265 which is awesome, that is, until the restrictor plate breaks. The restrictor plate is the metal plate over the intake that the filter cover screws into. Up until this year for the last 15 years, I have never had to replace one of those. This year I have replaced 9. All on the new 280's. Reason being? The filter cover isn't flush with the motor body like the 265's. So it catches on everything! Bushes, tree limbs, fences, decks, trailesr. It's easy to replace, but so annoying! Echo, if you are listening, I will not buy another trimmer until the design for the filter cover is changed so it won't catch on anything. Other than that, I feel echo builds the most solid equipment.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from I used to bleed echo orange I have bought over 300 echo items over the years I can't believe I am going to say this but I am over echo. The past two years the trimmers srm 230s and pb770hip throttles have been nightmares. I take them to the dealers for service and I hear it's the fuel no warranty. So I buy the expensive mix and they still have to be run on 3/4 choke with less power. I buy a 280 and pray it will last me a season. I personally use it and don't let any of the crews touch it so I can verify the fuel being used. Bought it late may well we'd I had to take to a preferred dealer whose first thing out of mouth I doubt it's warrantied. Unbelievable. All I know is that I have to try stihl next spring because of the 12 trimmers we started the season with 4 work decent-decent not even good. So frustrating as back in the day echo was king Still love the volume of air the pb770 sends compared stilhls 600 but when the echo won't start or run full out it really doesn't matter...sad day in the world of the mowman...RIP echo you were a great friend!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good power, reliability Trimmer has tons of power and really does its job, cuts through just about anything with the trimmer line. The only beef I have with the trimmer is the loss of power when you place it vertical to edge along a lawn. It just doesn't seem designed to handle that position. Other than that it's great.
