The SRM Echomatic head does require the removal of the spool to wind the line. If you would like a head that you can wind line without removing the spool I would recommend the Speed Feed cutting head.

Answer:
No, you simply push in on two tabs to release the bump head. Extremely simple and easy to reload. After using this type of head, I never wish to use any other kind. I go from running out of string, to having a full re-load in about 5 minutes. I found this honestly to be the fastest and most effortless rewind trimmer head on the market thus far and I've been in the lawn business for many a year.

Hi Jordy,

Your trimmer head has two string chambers that fill independently. Each chamber has an anchoring slot for the string to connect to the head.
Cut two, equal length strings from the bulk spool. They should be between 6' and 8' long, each.
Insert the end of each string into the slot in the hub. Load the string by turning the spool backwards to pull the string onto the spool. This action will straighten the string as it loads.
Directional arrows are on the back of the spool. The indicator arrow for "CC" is for the straight shaft trimmers. Curved shaft trimmers load in the opposite, or "C" direction.
After the spool is filled, use the locking slots to temporarily hold the string while you load the spool onto the head. Pull the string through the holes to unlock the string after the spool is seated.
Thank you for asking,
-Travis Read Less

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Echo 280 line feed The best for echo I only payed 29.99 at the store it last 2 years on my every day use. Thanks April 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Like new Old head, which was about six years old, was getting hard to load and not properly dispensing line. It is like having a new trimmer with this head in place. The package does not list this as a replacement for the SRM-210, but it is the exact replacement and fit mine perfectly. Easy to remove old one and install new. Just put an awl through the slot in the side of trim guard and into small hole in shaft above trimmer head; this will keep shaft from turning while you turn clockwise (with head facing up) to remove old one. Repeat by twisting new head counterclockwise (again with unit turned over and head facing up). September 7, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fixed the Problem I had an Echo edger for several years and then the head went out. It was a simple task to switch out the old one and install the new one, but no instructions were in the package. I figured it out. This performed like it did when I first purchased the edger. It seemed like a good quality product. September 1, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by SIMPLY THE BEST this is the best trimmer head out there i love it specially for commercial use long lasting easy to use and load with line way better then the cheap speed feed head they both from echo but nothing compares to echomatic to bad they dont sell the trimmers with it i had to throw the speed feeds and replace them with this ones. Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Hard to install and doesn't work It looks like a high quality part that would be a great replacement for my broken head. I installed it per the instructions, started my trimmer, and it didn't spin. I took my old head apart, got one side of it to work, and will muddle along with that until I decide to replace it, probably with a Stihl. June 20, 2015
