Answer:
You only need one. But one battery will heat and lose charge faster. The manual recommends that if there are more than 3 inches of snow or the snow is wet and heavy to not operate with a single battery.

21 in. Cordless 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Single Stage Electric Snow Blower - Battery and Charger Not Included is rated 4.7 out of 5 by 96.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good start I have the lawnmower, chainsaw and weed trimmer. LOVE them. Excited to see the snow blower. Didn't believe it would handle a blizzard in WI. First snowfall today 1-2 inches of heavy wet snow. Powerful. Yes. Easy. Yes. Love the ease of changing the chute direction. Didn't want to wait to charge the 2 new big batteries so used my smaller batteries from other products expecting them to die halfway through. They didn't. Driveway is over 100 feet plus some sidewalks. Took about 20 minutes and small batteries held up. Cons. It did push hard. It will be interesting to see how hard in over a foot of snow. That would be my only concern right now. Will it perform in difficult situations. thats why I gave it 4 stars. Mostly because I love EGO products and I give them the benefit of the doubt right now. So, after our first big snow the stars will either go up or down. If it can't handle big snow plow snow banks it'll be back to the gas blower. But I have hope. I'm sure a lot of people have been waiting for actual experiences and there really aren't too many so I put this up right away.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from BEYOND EXPECTATIONS As a Search & Rescue (SAR) Volunteer, the need to carry a chainsaw has always resulted in my wilderness vehicle smelling like a gas station. This resulted in trying several Li-Ion chainsaws from a variety of manufacturers. After using the EGO 56 volt chainsaw for numerous wilderness scenarios, we were most impressed. Thus when the need to have a non-gas powered snowblower was realized, the choice was a "no brainer"! To date we have used the EGO snowblower to clear decks and pathways, as well as the parking area, at an outdoor education centre of which I am the volunteer co-chair. A few of the snowfalls in our Northern Ontario area have been significant (over a foot in depth) and the EGO handled the job easily. Definitely BEYOND EXPECTATIONS!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Snow Blower I've Ever Used!!! I bought this snow blower not knowing what to expect, but I own 4 other EGO products and have been beyond impressed with those. Why not give it a shot, right? We got our first snowfall of the year yesterday afternoon/evening, so I was excited to try it out. Now, we only got about 4 inches of snow, but it was extremely wet, heavy snow. At the low part of my driveway, it was like a Slurpee. The first couple of swipes it was doing pretty well, throwing the snow about 12-15 feet. It was then that I realized the power lever was all the way down! Cranked that puppy up and it was throwing wet, heavy snow over 20 feet! I can't wait to see what it does with a foot of lake effect snow! The best part? It starts instantly, and I don't reek like 2 stroke exhaust (unlike any other blower I've owned).

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This snowblower kicks snow's butt! Today was the first time I got to break this bad boy out. Were having a winter storm here in Chicago. This thing made mincemeat of the snow! On the dual batteries that came with it, I was able to clear my sidewalks (I live on a corner lot), all the way down the sidewalk to my neighbor 4 houses down, part of the alley, my driveway, my neighbor across the alley's driveway, and most of his sidewalks before the batteries died. Very impressed to be able to do all that without having to change the batteries! The blower also shoots the snow out very far!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Workhorse I purchased the Ego snowblower last week. 7+ inches of snow today. This blower is better than advertised! Large driveway took 40 minutes to clear and batteries still going. Quiet powerful and easy operation.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Worth every cent First big storm to hit Hamilton, ON last night. EGO impressively plowed the 20CM heavy wet snow without any problems. It is quiet, easy to start/stop and maneuver. I was anxiously awaiting the snow plow leave a hard packed mess at the end of the driveway see how it handled – and it breezed thru!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Electric Snowblower Outperforms Gas! I bought the EGO snowblower after reading some favorable reviews. We just had our first snowfall of the year and it was super heavy, slushy stuff. The EGO handled it well. It threw the slush a good 20 feet or more, and was very easy to handle. The LED lights were great as well. Having used 2 stage snowblowers in the past, I found the EGO a welcome change. Push button start, and easy to handle around the driveway and sidewalks. The storage factor is awesome, taking up so much less space than a gas unit. Less hassle, great performance. Looking forward to the next snowfall! Bring it on.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Thrilled!!! I am a 62 year old woman whose husband passed away a year ago. I hated pulling the cord on our gas powered snow blower so I researched a battery operated one. I decided on an EGO and I LOVE it! First big snow yesterday and I went out when we had about 4 inches and did my patio and driveway in a little less than a half hour. This morning I woke to 4 to 5 more inches that was solid slush because the snow turned to rain. Too heavy for me to shovel so I decided to give my EGO a try thinking that all I was going to be doing would be clearing the chute of packed snow. Well guess what...it threw that slushy snow and I never once had to clear the chute. Another half hour on the original charge. About an hour later, I saw two neighbors, 70 and 81 years old trying to shovel their driveways so I grabbed my new snowblower and did both of their driveways. After almost an hour and 45 minutes or more, I finally had to charge my EGO! Highly recommend!
