Customer Questions & Answers

Does the top come off? Is there a removable lid?

Asked by: Elfi
The top is not easily removable, but there are two standard 4' barrel-top screw-in plugs which can easily be removed and replaced.

Is the barrel UV protected to prevent algae growth?

Asked by: Buck
The natural HDPE has a translucent white finish that allows you to see the fluid level in the barrel but also lets light enter the barrel which can promote algae growth. Algae provides micro nutrients to plants so it can be a benefit for gardening. If the water is being used for other purposes, then an opaque color like blue is recommended. Can multiple barrels be connected in series?

Asked by: greengardener
If you are prepared to raise them to form a cascade; otherwise you'd need a pump. It might be possible to pierce a 3x4 downspout more than once which might offer flows to more than one barrel.

Can this barrel be hooked up to a water filtration tank with a hose attachment?

Can this barrel be hooked up to a water filtration system tank with a hose attachment, rather than to a rain spout as shown in the photo? My filtration system uses 44 gallons each month to clean the tank and I want to save the water and divert it to the garden.
Asked by: lynnie
If your filtration tank is on the same level as the rain barrel, then I do not think you can do it. Water has to flow from your filtration tank to the rain barrel. If only by gravity, then your filtration tank has to be higher than the rain barrel. Or you need a pump to get water from filtration tank to barrel. When connected to the rain gutter, it is always connected to a location higher or at least same level as the rain barrel, so water can flow to the rain barrel.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rain Barrel I purchased this so I could water my lawn in between rains as I don't have a sprinkler system and city water gets expensive. Extremely easy to set up, and it fills up quickly. My only issue is the pressure of the water coming out. I have it set up on a 2 foot cinder block pedestal, but if I hook up a hose it just barely trickles out. I haven't tried a soaker hose yet, that might work, and of course it works just fine to fill a bucket or watering can, and to rinse my hands after yard work.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from DIY Rain barrel I just finished installing the diverter, spigot, and bottom drain. It was very easy. The included instructions (can also download from HD) are well written, very complete, and diagrams are easy to read/understand. I spray painted my barrel to match other colors I've used on my patio. The barrel and kit arrived in perfect condition. I'm super pleased with this system. My only complaint is that the spigot is plastic. I've seen the same diverter kit sold elsewhere with a stainless steel spigot.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from DIY Rain Barrel bundle a good start! I would like to have the option of more robust through-fittings for the barrel. I thought the bushings that came with the kit were genius, but they seem a little in-substantial for the task. Not sure what the alternative would be, but it is important. I have two barrels stacked vertically for water pressure, so fittings must be substantial enough to hold back that double column of water. A variety of drum plugs with pipe thread reducers would be useful as well. These drums come with two different threads for the openings on top (bung openings), a 2" pipe thread , and a 2" buttress plug (very coarse thread). Only one of the supplied plugs had a 3/4 pipe thread knockout.I had to shop and buy these bung plugs with reducers. They were not expensive and maybe one of each bung fitting with this reducer built-in should be included as supplied fittings.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Rain Barrel The Rain Barrel came on time. It's just like they described it. All the parts were included. Heavy enough to hold the rain without sagging at the bottom. A 55 gallon hard plastic drum. It is sealed tight enough to keep Mosquito out. I purchases 3 and they are already full. I think I need 1 more for the front of the house to water my potted plants. The direction need to be a little more clear with the drilling and placement of the holes. Other then that it is a great purchase.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Product Specifications are not clear The product description does not indicate that this barrel is sealed - that the lid cannot be removed. The kit that comes with it is worthless because if the barrel is stored upright (as the arrows on the side indicate it is meant to be used) the attachments can't be installed. These barrels do not work for connecting several barrels because their is no way to attach the drain or the hose bib.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Rain barrel bundle Installed this system last week, just in time for the rain couple of days ago. The installation was easy, the package includes all the necessary parts, except of course for the drill, screw driver. I like the clean looks, not having to cut out a section of the gutter, and the fact that the water will return back to the gutter when the barrel is full. The one surprise was that the barrel did not get filled up during the rainy day. I am not sure why. The barrel just filled about 1/5 of the way. My gutter is 2 " x 3". The only reason I can think of is somehow the rubber insert into the gutter is not seating properly inside the gutter, or is too large for this size gutter. Or perhaps this particular gutter is just not getting a lot of water collected. I also have another rain barrel but is the open type, and I have to cut off a section of the gutter to install. Between the two barrels, like the closed barrel more.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Handy rain barrel for our herb garden Easy/quick to assemble, although when full it can weigh almost 400 lbs and raising it high enough to flow requires a sturdy support. We like rain water to water our herb garden which is in tubs at waist level for easy maintenance. I did alter the valve assembly slightly to suit my own installation and it was easy.
