Customer Questions & Answers

Will this work with 2X3 and 3X4" downspouts?

I have the larger downspout (3X4) and was wonder if if this is going to work. Thanks for your help.
Asked by: RacinPhotog
Yes. I have 3X4" downspouts and my 55 gallon barrel fills from empty to overflowing when we get 0.2 inch of rainfall. That's just an observation - I think it actually overflows with just 0.1" of rain. Of course I have a fairly large roof! Example arithmetic is: (0.3" of rain) / (12 in/ft) x (30' x 20' (horizontal area) of roof collection) x (7.48 gal/cu ft) x (0.5 (estimated 50% diverted to barrel)) = 56 gallons. Go ahead and have fun with your numbers.

What do I need to do for winterizing?

It makes sense to empty the barrel and turn it upside down (or put it my shed for storage). But, what do I do about the diverter/hose opening in the downspout? Should the hose be removed and the hole plugged? Thanks!
Asked by: Hmmmm
Winterizing instructions are included with the package.

I have an old wine barrel, oak. The wood is about 3/4 inch thick. Your product bulkhead and spigot stem and threading doesn't look quite long enough....is it?

If the top of the barrel has a screened opening, will the diverter still function since the top is not sealed. The hose would still be going from the downspout to the side of the barrel NOT to the screened opening. In other words, will the water in the barrel flow out of the top or flow back to the diverter in the downspout?
Asked by: Top
As long as the level of the connection to the downspout is below the screen on the barrel it should work just fine.

DIY Rain Barrel Diverter and Parts Kit is rated 4.6 out of 5 by 226.
Rated 3 out of 5 by from Rain Diverter Product is pretty complete but quality of most of the components are pretty cheaply made. First time using the drain valve and the hole grommet for it won't stop leaking and faucet is pretty flimsy. Have to drain the barrel and remove the grommet and then reinstall with some rtv sealant. Other than already leaking, cheaply made components and uncertainty of how it will hold up to the UV rays and summer in TN, it is neat, complete and well thought out. Just need better quality components and a kit without having to pay for hole saw pieces in the kit. I'll be surprised if the parts last more than 2-3 summers.

The whole saw’s (drill the wholes) were of good construction and reusable for other projects. The rain diverter was made of thick rubber all seals where tight fitting and water tight. I bought a 65 gallon barrel and the following day we had a heavy down poor and the barrel filled up completely and nothing leaked. I recommend you use a good solid plastic barrel, when water collects the barrel bulges and stress the seals place faucet and drain as a l ow as you can. The reason is the barrel will bulge in the middle and not as much as you get lower to the bottom reducing stress on the seals. Also, follow the directions, the installation appears easy and it is, but there are a few tips that will benefit the projects outcome. The $8.00 shipping charge was not something I appreciated.

I have the larger gutter and cut the hole on the side as recommended. All necessary tools and parts were included. Well packaged and the instructions were clear. Operational in about 45 minutes, taking my time. AND, it appears to work. One nice thing is that you can disconnect and plug the hole (plug included) if you want to move the barrel or discontinue use. Well done. Recommend.

The diverter does function very well at sending water into the barrel, and water does *mostly seem to overflow back through the downspout when the barrel reaches capacity. However, don't expect to be able to hook a hose up to either the spigot or the threaded plug. Close but not close enough.

Very easy to install, although I haven't been able to test it out yet because we haven't had any rain. I was disappointed to realize the spigot is plastic, and not brass. It comes with everything you need (except for an actual drill) and installation only took a few minutes.
