Cannot wait for it to go on sale again. Need about 60 bags and yes, the weeds come thru, but not nearly as much as when we had nothing to cover the dry soil. Again..Love this product!

I've been using this bark for 7 years now and it's still in my yard. I only buy this brand. Seriously. I love the size, texture and color. Also, I use a 2" layer and it really deters weeds. Color fades in about 1 yr but that's expected.

Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by MrSanDiego Most finely ground bark mulch
I've purchased several dozen bags of this over the course of 2-3 year. I like that the bark size is roughly 3/4", which is one of the smallest I can get at the Home Depot here in Encinitas, CA. The downside with this product is that most of the bags I've gotten have a high amount of small cactus type spines, which means handling it with your hands is literally a pain. However, I've given it a higher value since I fine it more useful that the large sized mulches. The deep brown color of the bark from the evergreen trees looks good. As long as I put it down 3" deep or with landscape fabric under it, I've never had a problem with weeds growing up through it.

I've purchased 5 bags of this mulch. I really like that it's natural bark with natural color. I've not found any fillers in it either. I've used it both with and without a weed barrier, as well as on top of growing lawn (to kill it), and on sunny barren dirt slopes.
If you use enough bark, at least 3" deep, or use a weed barrier with your mulch, then weeds are less of a problem. However, as with any mulch, you'll need to pull out the odd weed or clump (or spray it with RoundUp).
Remember that if you have a "barren" area or slope, it just looks barren. There are always dormant seeds waiting to germinate on any piece of land. By putting down a thin layer of mulch (without a weed barrier), you are creating a shadier, moister climate and any dormant seeds in the earth will naturally germinate and come up through the bark. The answer is more mulch to block out the light, or weed barrier, or accepting the odd weed/grass you have to deal with.
My neighbor put down 3" of this mulch on their front yard area, which had been dirt for over a year. They just put the mulch bark down, without a weed barrier, in Sept. It's now December, and we've had a couple of rainstorms. I see a few clumps of grass starting to spring up. That's pretty much what you can expect if you are using mulch properly in a drier climate, and I'm happy with that.
My garden expert neighbor uses 6" and never has to pull a weed. So, this is a great product if you use it correctly. The only reason I left off a star for value is that give Home Depot is a major chain and California is a major producer of mulch as well as a major consumer of mulch in landscape, you'd think they'd be able to sell you this stuff in bulk at a lower cost, and deliver it to your job site,

Great easy to use non-artificially colored ground cover. Great value and will save us on a lot of watering.

I have been using this product for over two years without the weed problem described in other reviews. It does what mulch and ground covers should do: delays evaporation, lends the garden a clean and finished look as plants establish themselves, & when thick minimizes weed germination. I am a small woman and find the 2 cubic foot bags a manageable size.

We spread a thick layer of this ground cover over an area where no grass, or anything else for that matter, could grow. Within a week we had fine grass sprouts and weeds growing right out of the bark. I'm at a loss as I have already spread 10 bags and need to find something to match it in the rest of the yard.
