Can it handle pine needles and branches? Will the resins gum up the blades ir other parts? If so can it be ckeaned?

Asked by: BabaYaga
According to the manual, it can all be taken apart and cleaned. I've run two trees worth of pine (spruce, douglas fir) through mine so far, with no slowdown or gumming-up.

First the cons : as other reviewers have stated, unscrewing the yellow oil cap and adding oil to this unit is not easy, due to the location of the fill hole. Using a loose drill bit helped me lever the cap off and using a funnel with a hose to fill the oil worked for me. The pros: unit worked well in reducing both brown and green brush to garden mulch. I did not exercise the unit up to the 3" chipping limit, but it took 2" limbs with no problem, in addition to shredding smaller twigs and leaves.

The chute for branches easily accepts 3 inch branches which were easily chipped. Beware that it will occasionally grab the branch so gloves are a must. The top chute accepts twigs, small branches and leaves. Occasionally a section of twig or branch will shoot upwards out of the top so I also recommend wearing eye protection. It definitely does not happen often. Easy to use, easy to start. It is a bit loud, but I suspect they all are. It is also small enough to store in the garage.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Valued Purchase It is easy to use and meets all my expectations. The savings I have realized in being able to do the yard/tree work myself has nearly paid for the chipper. The only problem I have found is the engine oil fill and check receptacle is very difficult to access. I suggest purchasing a medium size funnel and tube arrangement to facilitate adding oil and a small mirror on a pocket size, telescoping handle to accurately verify required oil level. All in all, with my additions, this unit is a pleasure to have and use. I have received a quality product and excellent 'value for my dollar'.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from over priced First off the chipper chute has this tough rubber on it and almost impossible to feed over 1 1/2" branch through it. The hopper is only good for leaves. If you feed tiny branches through it the hopper clogges up and have to push down with a stick. I removed rubber from chute so i could chip 3" branches. Well max 2" or it will stall engine if hard wood. I changed oil after every use because it turned black. started using 10w-40 and oil stayed clean. so overall once i adjusted how i wanted it the chipper did very well but max i would only do 3" if soft wood and 2" hardwood. Hopper is just leaves only or really fine branches that are short. Only put small amount in at a time or will clog. Way over priced for what it is.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great Machine! We love this chipper! We really put it through the gauntlet with a year's worth of fallen branches, limbs from three trees we took down, and lots of tree and shrub prunings from our 1/2 acre property. The limbs just glide through like butter! You do need to trim any large, non-flexible limb spurs first if the V is bigger than 3inches. The bags are light weight and nice for carrying to your flower beds to empty. If you are careful getting the bag on correctly there's no problem with it slipping. I am the most excited to use this product but every once in awhile I give my husband a turn!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Better than Expected For the price I wasn't expecting much. I was pleasantly surprised. It was a piece of cake to get up and running and so far has done an excellent job. Once you get the hang of it you can easily make short work of a pretty sizeable pile of branches. I've gotten good at cutting my branches up in such a way that they fit more easily into the chipper. That makes a big difference. Basically cut them wherever they spread wide so they're mostly "V" shaped. This will help them feed better. So far I've ground up most of a holly tree that I removed, and a pile of branches about the size of two cars. It's worked perfectly. I hope it continues to work this well.

The thing runs like a champ, and will even eat branches slightly larger than 3", no sweat. The particles are incredibly fine, and work rather well. So far, it's eaten three 50-70' trees worth of branches, both hardwood (maple) and soft (Douglas fir, Spruce) without a hitch. Dense branches, fine branches... it doesn't care - it'll eat either type. There are a couple of caveats: - cold-starting is fine, but warm-starting the engine will take a bit of finesse with the choke. - this little beast is much heavier than it looks. shouldn't be a problem for most, but if you have to drag it up steps to get it into or out of storage, just be aware of the weight. - could stand to use a plunger of sorts, but any large-ish branch bit will do for stuffing things into the top hopper. - I kind of wish the front feed didn't have that silly rubberized cover on it. Sometimes I had to pull out something that had a knot of smaller branches coming off of it to re-orient, and the rubber made that harder than it had to be. - use the provided eye protection... the top chute will spit chunks upwards an impressive height if you throw anything big down the top.
