3 in. 212 cc Viper Engine Chipper Shredder is rated 3.9 out of 5 by 33.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good powerful chipper for home use. Went together easy, as noted by other reviewers the holes on the hamper needed to be enlarged slightly. Same comment on oil fill, get a long flexible funnel and you'll be all set. The chipper really rips through green branches up to 2 inches, pulls them right out of your hand. For anything larger hang on and feed it slower. I stalled it out the first time I let it eat a 3 inch branch on its own. It takes bundles of smaller branches no problem. It makes nice uniform chips for mulching, not sawdust or strips. Looks well made, heavy construction. Try not to let it run out of gas, it can be a bear to restart.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from product performed as expected but jammed up easily until you learned what size wood to feed it. This chipper/shredder did the job as expected but I don't think the 3" branches that it claims will work are going to as I couldn't get them in the chipper. Its very difficult to fill the oil as it is under the engine, down near the floor and a special long necked funnel is needed. Until you get the hang of exactly what wood to feed and how fast to feed it, it will jam up. Mine jammed up three times the first day and hasn't jammed at all since then. Also the on off switch doesn't stop the engine without cutting the throttle off and using the choke.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Works as advertised. Disappointment on arrival turned to satisfaction. When I opened the box I found the air cleaner shattered in the bottom of the box. Called HD and they said 1 1/2 weeks to get a replacement. Called the company and they sent one out right away. Didn't know HD actually ordered a replacement, since I told them I would contact the company myself. Both actually arrived the same day, 4 business days later. In the meantime, I glued the old one back together to try it out. Worked like a charm. I had just pruned my fruit trees and it handled everything, leaving me some nice chip mulch to spread around the trees. Used it a few days later to mulch up the prunings from a neighbor with just as satisfactory results.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great solution for the urban gardener I live in a town on a lot of approximately 5000 sq. ft. (not including the house). There are several enormous trees in my and the neighbors' yards, producing an incredible amount of leaves in the the fall. My yard has a large number of shrubs that require pruning several times a year. Unlike the previous home I owned - two acres with one in the woods - I cannot just rake everything up and dump it in a pile on my property. Quotes from local lawn and landscaping services were a minimum of $500 over the course of the year to remove leaves and debris. I like to garden and have started building raised beds in the area of my yard that receives good sun, and I decided that I'd rather turn all those leaves and debris into mulch and compost for the garden. Originally I thought I'd get one of the little electrical units that could shred leaves and small-diameter twigs, but realized after reading reviews and forums that I had too much work for such a unit and needed something with a gas engine and more power. I eventually ran across this machine, spent a week reading reviews and decided to buy it. I got it for $600, so it will take just over a year to pay for itself if I just consider debris removal. $500 would have been an excellent value given that metric. This fall I collected approximately 30 cubic yards of leaves over several weekends plus about 1 yard of dead vegetation (lilies, peonies, daisies - you get the picture), branches, and a climbing rose bush. The viper reduced this to a dense pile of mulch / compost of just over 1 cubic yard that I have sitting in a corner of my property for use next spring. Usage - the positive. The machine starts readily. Once you figure out how to dump leaves into the hopper, it will take them without clogging. Feed at a pace that does not fill the hopper but instead keeps some of it clear so more air can be drawn in to suck in the leaves. Sticks and branches can be dropped in the hopper and chopped, but parts can be kicked out. Wear the eye protection. I was beaned in the forehead several times by debris - nothing hard but it would have been a problem if it hit an unprotected eye. Larger branches can be fed into the chipper chute and won't spew debris back at you. However, if they are not fairly straight they won't be accepted and you will need to drop them in the hopper. Usage - the negative. Most of the negative was a learning experience and I am far less negative now than at the beginning. First off, I had cut a number of flowers and stacked the debris, waiting for the unit to arrive. It rained and the vegetation got wet. When I got the unit the only thing I tried to feed through it was the wet material, and things gummed up rapidly. I had to stop the machine and clear the hopper by hand (disconnect the spark plug!). After a while I got a better sense of how much wet (and I mean wet) stuff could be processed with an intermix of drier material. The bag does not seal well around the discharge chute, and leaves can create a lot of dust. Dust breathing protection is recommended when processing a large quantity of leaves. Oh, when adding oil, I used a funnel with a separate tube that snaked to the oil fill well. You cannot just pour it in straight from the bottle. After several weekends of use I finally decided I could write a fair review. I am really happy with this purchase and would recommend to anyone in a similar situation. I am anxious to use the material next spring for the garden because it did produce perfect mulch and a worm home. Best yet it takes so little space in my tiny garage. My wife was worried about that but it easily fits in an approximate 2' x 2' space in a corner and acts as a great holder for the recycle bin that was sitting there.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Powerful chipper Very powerful chipper. Also very loud. So far, no problems starting it, and it will run for a good while on the tank of gas, which is small. A few complaints: one of the wheels came cracked, and now I have to contact the company and deal with that headache. The other is the badly designed oil/dipstick. It practically goes in horizontally, making it near impossible to get a reading of your oil level. The instructions say the level should reach the first threads of the screw-in dipstick, but since it's not vertical there is always oil on the engine's threads, which transfers to the threads on the dipstick when screwing it in. I fear running it low on oil while being fooled into thinking it's full. Also, some of the bolt heads already have surface rust, and I've had it less than a month. I assume that Earthquake knows that people will store this in their sheds, not inside their houses, so the rust is worrisome. I bought it for my 40+ Sweet Viburnum "shrubs", which if left unattended turn into 25 foot monstrosities, so I don't know if that is a relatively soft wood or not, and can't comment on how it does with other, harder tree branches. I also have not attached the bag, as advised in the instructions. Instead, I put down a large standard blue tarp and shoot the discharged mulch onto that, then tie the tarp to the back of my lawn tractor and drag it to where I want to use the mulch. Is $600 too expensive? Not compared to the competition, but more than I wanted to spend to deal with my Viburnum.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great This machine is all that I had hoped for, adequate power, quick start, easy to move around and really grinds things to a fine texture. The only real negative I see is that you cannot slow the engine down enough to conveniently empty and replace the bag. You pretty much need to shut the engine down and restart it after replacing the bag. Also, the air filter seems to be a little bit rinky-dink.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from first use Used this chipper for the first time today. The performance of this machine exceeded my expectations. The engine is very powerful and easily shredded branches, trunks and brush both green and dried. Very happy with the purchase and looking forward to using it all season.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Fantastic Used this for the first time yesterday, bring on the branches, leaves and all things smaller than 3". This machine chews it all. Make sure the oil is checked every time you use it, if not the machine will be difficult to start. wear face protection as there will be chunks shot out of the top from time to time. The discharge chute really blows the shredded materials out so be very cautious where the chute is pointing. The shredded material is very useful.
