Answer:
Yes, the arm and chain has to be installed. Instructions are adequate. Only critical step is getting the chain installed in the right direction. A little image of a link is stamped on the saw to help you get it right. All other components are already together.

Answer:
I believe the rotation of the chain is, top of bar, rotates towards the tip/front of bar, to bottom of bar.
The sharp part of the chain teeth should be facing forward on the top of the bar, and towards the pole on the bottom.
The rotation is displayed in the manual that came with it. If the print is too small for you, you can download the manual from the Home Depot, Earthwise 8" 2-1 Pole Saw item Read More

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 57 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Years of Struggling Elimninated I have five trees that I keep trimmed in a particular shape on the side of my house. In the past it was a major chore because of the height and the need for a ladder that would reach 10 foot. No more with this pole chainsaw. It's light, easy to use and makes the job 100% easier and faster. Great investment at a great price. I highly recommend this product to the Do It Yourseflers out there. May 24, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great tree pruner This is an engineering marvel. Easy to convert from hand to pole. Hard to know how they could improve. When working with the pole extended, the business end is really hard to control due to it's weight. I was able to do what I needed to trim branches at end of pole, however. If you are average or better strength in upper body, this is the chain saw to get the job done. May 3, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Very handy Clever design and easy to snap on and off the pole. I'm a petite woman so it gets heavy for me if I use the pole. Thus it was difficult to keep the balance and to control exactly where to cut. I prefer to climb up the ladder and cut as handheld chainsaw for those branches I can reach. Quite powerful and it's sufficient for pruning my fruit trees. I have paid hundreds of dollars for some tree service people to prune my trees but they just couldn't get it right. Unless I spend even more for an arborist, but now I can prune the trees the way I want. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by =Should of had one sooner--makes trimming trees easy= Hi I've had it 2 months works great used it on pine-avocodo and other tree limbs--easy to use- cuts down on the mess=cut it down with pole use small saw to cut up --the small saw is small enough to cut up branches inside a large trash can =less mess--allready paid for itself gardener wanted $100 to cut the pine tree February 25, 2015
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Layout a few more bucks for a better saw. Pros: - Easy to assemble (though the chain was a little awkward), start and use. - Good reach. Cons: - Chain needed readjustment/tightening every few minutes. This was a MAJOR PROBLEM while working on the roof trimming limbs - especially those near power & phone lines. - I expected it to be top heavy & it was. November 22, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Very efficient and lightweight. This was easy to put together and very easy to use. Very efficient and lightweight without seeming cheaply made. Love it. December 8, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Extension Chair Saw Easy to use with one exception, that being when fully extended it is a bit cumbersome in balance. Other wise great for small to medium pruning chores. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by best buy i made this year I am very happy with my 8 in. 2 in one convertible pole chainsaw I fine that I am looking for more to cut with this saw I would recommend this saw . November 3, 2015
