Questions & Answers

Does weedblock Polypropylene landscape fabrick have to be covered with mulch

Asked by: Burn
You can cover with whatever you wish. Stones, mulch, sand. Your choice.

do i have to rake the existing leaves and mulch before installing weedblock?

Asked by: redhead
I would expect that would be a good idea. In my case the area I used it in was grass covered but had been completely cleared to replace a sewer line so I didn't have to deal with that situation. I did rework a small area and I did remove the old mulch. This area seems to be doing better than the large area that had been cleared completely.

WeedBlock 3 ft. x 50 ft. Polyethylene Landscape Fabric is rated 3.8 out of 5 by 282.
Rated 4 out of 5 by from Helps but doesn't solve... I cleared a hillside full of weeds and vines. I left it uncovered for about 3 weeks and weeds were sprouting everywhere. I pulled the weeds again, and covered with the landscape fiber and it made a huge difference. It was covered for about 6 weeks before I planted and covered with mulch and there wasn't a weed in sight. It's been about 4 months now and some weeds are starting to come through. However, I'd say the fabric prevented about 90% of the weeds from coming back. I can't speak to the long term success of this, but it made a huge difference in the short term.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from this product is great! I bought a house that had river stones in a court yard. The problem is there wasn't any weed block and the rocks sank into the sand and now I have to dig them all out, and wash them to restore the court yard with the rocks. I am putting this under the rocks so I don't ever have to dig out rocks, not to mention... well hardly any weeds ever come through!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Easy to work with and no weeds yet! We had a ring around a front tree that was simply clogged with weeds. We needed to fix it quick for a house showing, so we bought this fabric and some plastic pegs to hold it down. It was easy to work with, even having to use it in a circle. We weed whacked down to the dirt, laid the fabric, pegged it, and put 3 inches of mulch on top, as per the instructions. A month has gone by, and nothing has poked up! Yay! The squirrels dig through the mulch and get to the fabric and are like "whaaat" but they haven't succeeded in ripping it up. It was a great bargain and thank goodness- no weeds! (Oh, and one tip- if you are putting flowers in through it- don't cut an "X" and shove them in. Cut a hole the size of the pot. The flowers need the breathing room) (and PS- the green little bits in the mulch in the pic are just some downed tree branches, not weeds!)

Rated 1 out of 5 by from horrible stuff I would rate it zero if available. Weed and grass still grow thru in no time. It was a nightmare then to pull the weed or grass as the roots now grew thru the mesh which made it a 100 times harder to pull thru and the mesh tears, so pulling one weed ended up tearing a huge area! Mine just like the photos other posted. I bought so many rolls, and I refuse to use them. Not even under the gravels or rubber mulch by my pond. I changed them all out with 3 to 4 layers of newspaper and I have no weed or grass came thru the newspaper since. It has been almost 2 years now, still all good!

Rated 3 out of 5 by from WeedBlock 3 ft. x 50 ft. Polypropylene Landscape Fabric My husband and I used this last year in our veggie garden, with a drip system. It helped to provide warmth to the soil, letting us start about 2 weeks earlier, provided a mulch type barrier to help us conserve water, kept out zucchini and other veggies off the dirt and a barrier from bugs, and there were no weeds to compete with our veggie garden.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from easy to use and effective I have been using this fabric for years and it has always been easy to install and effective in controlling weeds. I wish it was less expensive and came in a smaller roll when I only need a little to do a new planting.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from weed grower Our weed and grass problem became much worse once we put this weed blocker down. I would swear that our weed blocker was dipped in Miracle-grow. What a giant waste of time and money.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Weeds grew right up through it. I had bought a similar product at a similar price from a different store and ran out- home depot was very close to my home so I ran out to grab an additional roll of this type of product to complete my job. When I opened the roll of Weedblock I noticed that it was more like a plastic sheet than a woven cloth-like product I had used on the rest of my garden. I also noticed that it had tiny perforated holes in it-- After two weeks of having my rock garden completed I noticed that the portion of garden that I used the Weedblock on had a few big green leaves on it- I thought they had fallen off of a tree until I went to pick them up. Turns out the weeds in my garden also noticed those tiny perforated holes and started growing right up through them. This product was a complete waste of money and now I'm debating pulling all of my rocks up and replacing it with a different product.
