Customer Questions & Answers

Can you change the breakers if you need less than 60amps?

Asked by: myocastor
This is NOT a breaker. It is an outdoor switch that can safely handle UP TO 60 Amps. It is used by the air conditioner repair tech to shut off power to the compressor. Your compressor is already protected by a breaker, in your breaker panel in the house.

What Size / Type Breaker Would Fit Into The Eaton 60 Amp Double Pole Disconnect Switch?

I need to use this disconnect both as a cut-off switch (of course), but I also need to change the 60 Amp rating, for the rating of the air conditioner compressor being installed (25 amp). What size (type or model) of breaker will fit into this double pole disconnect, in place of the 60 amp switch? (Two people here have said that the switch can be changed to an automatic breaker.) Many thanks!
Asked by: Robot
This is only a switch. It is not a breaker. This is used to disconnect power for working on the air conditioner. You almost certainly already have a breaker, in your breaker panel inside, for your air conditioner. If that breaker has too much ampacity (say 50 amps) then change THAT breaker inside the house.

Yes. Any Siemens Q style plug in breaker will work up to the rating of the panel, which is 60 amps.

Can I use this as a disconnect between PV panels and charge controller?

My solar installer said I could use this instead of the more expensive solar DC disconnects, but I'm skeptical since this says "AC Type" and the voltage from my panels is DC. Can anyone tell me for sure?
Asked by: Ryan
No! You cannot use an AC rated disconnect for DC applications like solar. The reason is that when the switch is opened and interrupting the current flow, an arc appears that maintains the current flow. In an 60Hz AC (=Alternating Current) application the current changes direction 60 times a second, and as soon as it changes direction the arc dies and the current flow stops. So within a fraction of a second it stops. However, in a DC (=Direct Current) application the current never changes direction, and a special arc eliminator has to be built into the switch, to kill the arc after the switch is opened. This is basically just and insulator that is pushed between the two contacts of the switch when you open (turn off) the switch.

It matched the old box so was an easy install. Much more convenient to flip a switch instead of inserting the blade in old box. I don't know why this style isn't carried in the store instead of having to order it.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Switch Using this instead of a timer switch for 220 volt water heater. This is sturdy metal and feels and works well. It also changes water usage habits but is not in use long enough to determine if there are cost savings. For the price, it should take 1 month to pay for itself instead of 3 to 4 months for the cost of an automatic switch.
