This product was recommended by an electrician. Only way to know if this product is working is if the house gets hit by lightening or major electrical event from the utility.
I could only give it 3 stars because it was recently installed... not enough history to evaluate it. The specs do not indicate how many years I can expect it to perform. 10, 20 or 40 years? I am to monitor the two lights at the bottom. Green means good, red bad.

A little hard to install the body. After I got it through the knockout, I could not fit the service panel cover back on. So I had to put on a box coupler and a rigid coupler, after I had cut the wires it just reached into the breaker.Siemans Panel and Breaker. The 50amp breaker that Eaton recommends Siemens for me, could not screw down tight on the wire. Wire is between a 12-14 awg size, this could have been at least a 10awg. when twisting the stranded wire after stripping I found the strands breaking some. Make sure your 50amp breaker screws go all the way down for clamping these wires.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by exaramco Easy to install
This item is easy to install for those with electrical experience. Note that it is best practice to install the breaker for this unit at the very top of the panel where the power lines come in. If in doubt, hire an electrician. As to how effective the unit is, this will have to wait for a lightning strike near our house.

Shipped quickly, cost reasonable when compared to options, quick to install, within one hour if done by a professional, who has the additional parts needed beyond what is sent. Will wait to see it the total cost of over $400 for price of item and installation solves the electrical surge issues in our home.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Marty Easy to instal
Not difficult to install if you don't mind working in an open electrical panel to install the 50 amp circuit breaker. In my case I had to move about ten other breakers down two slots to make room to add the new 50 amp breaker near the top so that the Surge protector neutral and earth connections would reach the appropriate buses.

This unit was installed on a 200 amp circuit breaker which is next to the meter and feeds the breaker panel for the home. I liked the fact that it has a separate (4th) ground wire in addition to the 2 hot leads and the white. The installation was easy and the ground wire was hooked to the main ground, white to load white, red to load black and black to load black on the 200 amp breaker. Used a T-Handle 3/8" Hex wrench. HD has it for $7.83 - Store Sku # 1000504737 Internet # 203195195

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Dave Only ONE BIG issue
The unit does not come with breakers and the instructions say to use two(2) 50 amp breakers. Unit comes wired with 20 amp wire that will not work with 50 amp breakers. Ended up calling an electrician who was also very puzzled by the instructions. Installed the unit with 20 amp breakers to match the wire. Said it would be an improper installation to use 50 amp breakers with 20 amp wire and could cause problems down the road.
He recommended Kabar system - a bit more pricey - if/when this unit fails.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Claude Very good product, worked as designed
I had one of these installed 2 years ago when I bought a generator. Then in November of 2014, some power lines nearby came down and caused a power surge through our housing plan. I saw 7 furnace contractors on our street that day. We had several neighbors that lost ALL their kitchen appliances as well as other electronics. My house came through relatively unscathed; the surge protector blew out as designed (see picture) and we lost 2 other surge protectors inside the house. Without all of those in place I'm sure we would have sustained major damage. Multi-tiered surge protection is recommended and in our case saved us a lot of money. I will never be without one again.
