Customer Questions & Answers

When it says 11 kw, what does that mean - 11 kilowatts per hour?

Asked by: KansasGirl
For some reason, this model is labeled '11' but it is a 13.6 Kw unit. 57 amps times 240 volts equals 13,680 watts.

It says a 1 x 60 amp. Would a 2 x 30 amp work?
Asked by: Specialsnowflake
One 60 amp double pole breaker. Never ever replace a breaker with a higher amperage breaker unless you up-gauge your wiring as well. You would be risking burning down your home.

Would this model be able to support kitchen/bathroom sink and a washer? Not all running at once.

Asked by: James
I installed this exact same model in a townhouse almost a year ago. The resident has two teenage daughters and they have never ran short on hot water. It is a 3 bedroom 2 bath (with 3 females) and this model handles two showers, the washing machine, and a dishwasher all at the same time. We purposely tested under extreme conditions upon the initial install. You'll be more than happy with this tank-less water heater! In fact, I'm getting ready to remove two traditional water heaters for two separate apartments and install a single tank-less heater.

Installed in a one bath home in Florida panhandle, produces plenty of hot water. No difference in pressure in the shower going from full hot to full cold (set at 125 degrees). I have had a Bosch 125K BTU gas in my 4br 2.5 bath Michigan home for 10 years and was skeptical if this would be enough heater. As I purchased, I fully expected to be returning for the 18K model (refer to opening statement). Size is hard to discern from pictures, this unit is about the size of a Metropolitan Yellow Pages. Literally, can almost be installed anywhere. Have only had it a few weeks, so cannot speak to longevity.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from REMEMBER TO TRANSFER THE WASHERS! Would have given 5 stars if not for the instruction omission on the washers. Meaning if you don't turn the caps over to see them you will throw them away. Overall this is a great unit, installed easily and works very well. This is the second eco smart unit I have used (the smaller of the two) but works just as good as its bigger brother. I installed this in an RV with isolation valves to bypass the main 6 Gal gas/Elec std heater. Instructions are simple to understand and follow but REMEMBER TO USE THE WASHERS FROM UNDER THE FACTORY CAPS with the provided conversions fittings. It will leak if you do not. The manual says to not use pipe dope or teflon tape but also does not tell you to transfer the rubber washers. They go between the permanent nipples on the unit and the first conversion fitting to pex or copper. Everything else is self explanatory per the instructions. Happy installing! ~JT

I bought this unit six years ago and it performed flawlessly as a whole house water heater. No doubt paid for itself in electric bill savings in the first year. When the built in flow sensor began to leak, I ordered a replacement from Home Depot. Before it arrived, the EXCELLENT factory support sent a repair / upgrade kit FREE, (Thank you Joe!) also gave me a tip about cleaning the heating elements to improve performance. While I returned the Home Depot order, I will NEVER buy another water tank heater and can't say enough about the engineering savvy and support of Ecosmart.

I am very glad that I did, because the tank water heater was the original one and was very old. It seemed that one person repaired the old unit by replacing the heating coil previous to me. But when I finally got the old unit out and ready for pick up by the scrap metal collector, I had to pump out the water to make it light enough to move by using a makeshift hand pump. I found that the water was very rusty inside and imagined what it meant that I was showering with this water and even making a quick tea with it! I picked this tankless water heater, because it had simpler electrical requirements and could use the pre-existing wiring. The more powerful gallons per minute units required the addition of more breakers and more wiring. This is something I highly recommend figuring into buying and setting up the unit, because in some places you need a specialist or two to get this done. I was fortunate to find someone to have all the qualifications needed. It is amazing how little room this unit takes! I set it on maximum, and found that it covers all my needs and the needs of my household. The only thing that I notice is that it takes a little longer to fill a bath, except on warmer days where the water flow is faster. The low water shower heads work perfectly with this unit, and you can even have a person using the hot water in the kitchen sink at the same time. Filling up the wash, filling up the tub, or running the dishwater seems to take all the load that this unit has, but you can still use the kitchen sink or rinse your hands at the bathroom sink. All in all, it works well for three people, with only one person showering at a time. This was also the limit with the tank water heater (you could do two people at the same time, but the water runs out very fast), but the nice thing with the tankless is that people can shower one after the other, since there is no tank to run out. When the weather gets warmer, the number of people using it at the same time also increases. This could allow someone to get burned if he/she is showering with only the hot water on. It is recommended in the manual to use a little bit of cold water at the same time, then slowly increase the hotness of the water by lowering the cold water amount. I found this felt safe for me and I have not gotten burned yet. I did have one "almost," though, and am a little more cautious about this. The challenge is that, given the seasonal changes in water temperature, the tankless works by bring temperature water A to temperature B. It tends to increase by the about the same amount. It seems to even increase noticeably more when there is even a warm day in a cold season. I use a lazer temperature meter to help me fill the bath to the right temp. I like it at 108 degrees Fahrenheit, and when I fill it, I let it trickle at the temperature that is the highest, which can be about 124 degrees, when the water is half way, I go with a faster gallons per a minute (at a lower temperature), adjusting the flow so that when it is full it is at 108 degrees. We have gotten used to this finesse, and time the baths accordingly. We would not ever go back to a tank water heater unless we had to.

When our big 65 gal. tank began to fail, we considered going tankless. I bought the ECO-18 only to find that our 100 AMP electrical system could not handle it so we returned it and got the ECO 11 instead. I was skeptical that the smaller unit could handle our hot water needs, but surprise! It works great, even with two showers being used at the same time. Gobs of hot water. However, we are in Florida and the inlet water temperature never falls below 62 F. This may not be the case up north. Love ! Five stars!

I am completely dissatisfied.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Inconsistent and Unreliable Stability of water temperature is very poor, with constant water flow the temperature would cycle from cold to scalding, necessitating caution and constant adjustment. After about a year the water would not get hot. The outlet thermistor was bad. I contacted the company and I had a big issues with warranty repair because I didn't register the product. They reluctantly gave me two thermistors to replace the ones in the heater. The water heater worked again but the inconsistency remained. Eight months later and the water temperature is barely over 100 F. Bad thermistors AGAIN. Now I have to find new themistors!!! I am done with this product.
