Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by bhees long-life cost-saving replacement for 40-watt incandescent
This is pretty much a drop-in replacement for a 40-watt incandescent; equal to or better in almost all ways. It's the same size. It's dimmable using a regular electronic dimmer switch. It appears well-built. It's only 8 watts but it's slightly brighter than a 40-watt incandescent I compared it to, and a lot brighter than a two-year-old 13-watt compact fluorescent I compared it to. And it's much cooler to the touch than them.
Assuming it really does last 22 years and only use 8 watts, it's great. That'll save a lot of money in bulbs and electricity. Perhaps equally important is you won't have to get out the step ladder and change this bulb for a long, long time.
When it does eventually wear out you can throw it away (or dispose of it same as other electronics). It's not hazardous waste like a compact fluorescent is.
If you drop it from high enough it may stop working (I didn't try) but it won't send shards of glass everywhere like an incandescent would -- or shards of glass plus mercury like a compact fluorescent would.
Two minor drawbacks: The light is slightly uneven (but inside an enclosed ceiling fixture it's hard to notice the difference). Also, the bulb is significantly heavier than a normal bulb, which may matter in some types of freestanding lamps. For most uses these issues shouldn't be a problem.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nate Finally a LED bulb for Wall Sconces
For a long time it seems like LED bulbs were focused up or down, but not outward. This bulb fits perfectly in our wall sconce and shines light 360 degrees around the bulb. It turns on way faster than the florescent bulb it replaced.
Note that if you want a light that shines up or down, do not buy this one. There are no LED s on top of the bulb.

I got this bulb, hoping it was more along the lines of light I was hoping for. I am not fond of the super white light, but this light is just what I wanted. It is more of a yellow white.. A warmer more natural light. So much happier!! Now, as to saving money, I will be watching., This replaced a cfl that I was using, I am interested in seeing how it does in terms off moneey saving.

I bought a 4-pack of 8W LED bulbs to install in a suspended lamp that sits less than 3 feet about our high dining table. The 60W incandescent bulbs generated heat and were annoying to our eyes, therefore an LED replacement that emits light from the sides was the right solution.
In my opinion, these lamps generate better output than 40W bulbs, but slightly less than 60W. The color temperature is 3000K which is not as warm as standard incandescent but is still acceptable in most applications. The consumption is only 8W which is not only great for energy savings but also means they generate less heat (safe to touch even when ON for hours).
Those are slightly taller than the equivalent incandescent, which was a concern as I didn't want the bulb to stick out beyond the shade, but it ended up being acceptable. A little more compact design would be appreciated.
Check out the pics, these bulbs generate most of the light from the sides so check your fixture before buying. For example these would work perfectly in a table lamp or sconce. The same brand offers a cheaper option that directs the light to the top.
I love them but I think they are a little overpriced still!

I installed this bulb in an outside location for security. Even though it is rated to replace a 40-watt bulb, I used it in place of a 60-watt bulb. This bulb produces a very "white" color light, so I felt it was as bright as the 60-watt bulb it replaced. If you like a warm "yellow-ish" light, you may not like this as it is very "white". I will end up saving a lot of money over the life of the bulb because it only uses 8 watts.

This is a nice bulb. the color temperature is very pleasing. It is dimmable, but it will not start at low dimmer levels. You must turn it on at a high dimmer setting, then lower the dimmer to your desired level. If you shut it off at that level, it will not restart. This may be my dimmer misbehaving, I will try it on another. Other than that, it is a great bulb!

The good thing about this blub is the new LED technology which has instant on. Older LED's take a while to brighten and have a yellow glow. Since it is a 40W it is very dim so would be good for a night light. Pricing is high even though they claim 20+ years of use.

Used this lamp to replace a burned out CFL and I don't notice a difference in the light output! Very energy efficient, gives off little to no heat, and long lasting.
