Customer Questions & Answers

Can a light fixture still dim a bulb that is not dimmable?

Apologies for my stupidity. I'm looking at a light fixture (ceiling fan light kit) that uses the 40W EQUIVALENT SOFT WHITE (2700K) DECO CFL LIGHT BULB bulbs. The fixture is dimmable yet these bulbs are not dimmable. Can the light fixture override the bulbs? I just want to make sure that I will be able to dim the light lights in the fan before I purchase it. THANK YOU!
Asked by: Paula
If the bulb is not dimmer bulbs, it won't work. The bulb just goes out as you try to dim it. And they will burn out very fast if you try this. Been there, done that. There are nice LED bulbs that are available today, that aren't prone to CFL issues like slow warm ups and all that. I've bought quite a few of this style, LED bulb. Not sure about dimmable though, haven't bought any LED candle style that are dimmable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice and compact, but with one serious flaw These are a nice replacement for light fixtures that have the candle-type bulbs with the candelabra base. However, the threads on these are a tad bit short. Doesn't sound like a problem, except that their plastic housing butts right up against the metal threads and sticks out about 2mm past the metal, thus keeping it from screwing all the way into the socket. I put 5 of these in a light fixture, and nothing lit up. I had to get a razor knife and whittle the plastic down to being flush with the metal threads so it could go just a little further into the socket. Now all is well. It probably should have lost more than 1 star, but it was fixable and they work well once they make contact. Another light fixture did not have that problem. However, the company really needs to modify their design.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Torn between quality and poor engineering. I am impressed with the color, life span, and how quickly it gets up to full light output but I am frustrated by the plastic flange around the bottom of the metal threaded section of the bulb because it is so wide you cannot screw the light bulb into a standard fixtures light socket. So I have had to file or grind the plastic down in order for it to be able to make contact with bottom of the light socket. Unfortunately I ruined 2 out of 18 trying to do so. I would just expect more research and development before mass producing a bulb which is otherwise a quality bulb.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Not long lasting at all! 7 years? Nope, try 1 year for 2 of 3. Probably cheaper in the long run to just buy incandescent and pay the tiny bit more for electric. So much for trying to be eco-friendly - I think the plastic and gases in this thing are going to cause more trouble in the landfill than a dead incandescent.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Does not last as long as advertised I bought 9 of these to replace incandescent lights on a timer that run for about 6-8 hours a night (depending on sunset). I've already had to replace 3 in under a year. They are supposed to last much longer than this. They save energy, but don't last long enough to make back the initial investment. Switching back to incandescents for the lights as they burn out until someone makes a candelabra base LED with some decent brightness. I would never think of using a CFL indoors. The color on these is okay, but the CFL flicker really bothers me.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Lasts 2-3 months Package says 7 years, I've used two of the bulbs - in less than 6 months. They actually last about 2 to 3 months. I was hoping that the first one was a fluke, but the 2nd one burned out today after only 2 months. I like that they are very bright and use very little energy, but they are a total waste of money - they burn out faster than any bulb I've ever used of any kind.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Disappointing Life I bought these bulbs to use in exterior porch lights and have had them approimately 8 - 9 months. The packaing suggests they should kast for 8000 hours or almost 4 years if you use them an average of 8 hours a night. After this short period of time they now need to be replaced. They are not lasting any longer than a regular decrotive light bulb; which cost far less money to purchase. And at 3.33 per bulb you cannot save enough energy wise to jusitfy the purchase price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from these lights mimic the color of regular light bulbs best. I have a candelabra over my kitchen table which is on all the time. I tried another cfl but they were too white. These lights mimic the regular light bulbs best in terms of color. One of hte bulbs out of six I purchased has a slgiht flicker while warming up and occasionally when running which is a problem. Obviously a quality control issue someplace. Other than that I am satisfied.
