Answer:
It should be fine. The max wattage listed on the lamp is there because of a concern for the lamp getting too hot and becoming a fire hazard. Since there are only 40 w of input power and a higher percentage of that power is coming out as visible light (equivalent to the light of an old 60w incandescent bulb) this bulb should be making less heat than a 40w old school incandescent bulb.

60W Equivalent Eco-Incandescent A19 Soft White Dimmable Light Bulb (4-Pack) is rated 1.8 out of 5 by 10.
Rated 1 out of 5 by from Junk bulbs I've been having mixed luck with pricey LEDs actually lasting a while, so when I needed some bulbs in a pinch, I figured I'd go with reliable old incandescent bulbs. Yes, they aren't as energy efficient. No, they don't claim to last for 23 years. Problem is these are junk too. I installed 5 of these and only one remains after about 2 months. Guess I'll try another brand of LEDs and hope for better performance.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Worst. Bulbs. Ever. Gives off good light, but they don't last, at all. I'm changing these out all of the time. Several have lasted less than a month. Save yourself the hassle and buy something else.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Don't last If you need the exercise of constantly changing bulbs, these are for you.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Very Short Life I replaced most of my lights in the house as they burned out with these and they all had about 1/3 the life of an incandescent bulb.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from What a terrible quality! Replaced a bulb in my garage that lasted for 18 years (at least!) a week ago. First stays for 4 days. Second died in one day! What a joke. Claims 2X life! Do not buy!!!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Buy a different brand I installed these light bulbs in my bath room less than 2 months ago. Not a single bulb is still working!

Rated 1 out of 5 by from They Don't Last The color of these bulbs are nice, but they don't last more than a month.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very Nice I decided to wait to write a review based on the other review about short life. I removed all of the CFLs in my home and installed these Eco 40's. Ironically all of the interference on my home speakers and radios is gone now. I have had them in 3 months now and all are still working. another thing is that when I use a watt meter to measure the watts it says only 21.2 watts. The 14 watt CFLS I had in also used 21 to 22 watts. I read the power factor on CFLS is horrible and decided to check it and sure enough it was .56. This Eco 40 has a perfect 1 Power Factor. The Color is also 100Cri like the sun where the CFL was 76 making my home feel like a morgue. Great bulb. I am not expecting this to last 7 years. Then again I tried an LED that burned out in a month.
