The description of this product says it is both laminate and solid wood. Which is it?

In the description, it says it is both laminate and solid wood and can be stained which I find very confusing. It is my understanding that laminate is plastic and would not stain but wood could be stained. Is this solid wood or wood covered with a laminate?

According to Merriam-Webster, laminated is "made by pressing together thin layers of material."
These are (~4") strips of solid wood glued or "laminated" side-by-side to form the wide (~2') panel. I recently bought 4 of these panels and used them to build a large bookshelf for my morning room. They worked very well! They were easy to handle, cut, rout, sand, whitewash, poly, etc. I have plans for 3 more

The difference between Edge Glued Panel and Plywood is how the wood is laminated. When you look at the edge of a sheet of plywood you can see 5 or more layers laminated face to face. The better quality sheets are used on the face while the lesser grades in the center. By laminating the sheets so that the grain directions vary the plywood becomes stronger. The downside is how to handle the edges.

Edge Glued of this size starts with strips of wood about 5/8" x about 3 1/2" wide that are glued edge to edge. Looking at the face of the wood you can often make out the individual boards. While EG panels are good for most projects they lack the strength of plywood. They do however have closed edges that are easier to work with.
I just finished using EG panels for a desk top. They took a stain rather nicely. Read Less

Answer:
This is not a laminate, but a laminated piece of pine wood. What this means is that it has a coating already applied to it and cannot be stained.

I would like to buy this, but there are none available within 100 miles. Is there any way to buy it and have it shipped?

Because this Edge-Glued Panel is only available in select Home Depot stores, I believe the best advice would be to talk to one of our Lumber department professionals at your local Home Depot store. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by great for end tables/tv stands I've used this pine board for making end tables tops and it came out very nice. Takes a stain well, boards were not bowed in any way. I did however pick them out myself at the local HD. They had various lengths available. February 13, 2013
