It's pretty solid.. So if you go at a reasonable speed and use a sharp bit, it should be alright.

Can this be stained a darker color?

Asked by: clorge
It's unfinished wood, so I don't see why not. I'd practice on the underside first, though, to see how the stain looks / interacts with the wood.

This top appears to be coated with thin layer of oil, but I find no mention of that. Is it, and can I polyurethane over it?

Asked by: Tableguy
Mine did not appear to have any oil on it. however I sanded it before I varnished it.

This shock resulted in a longitudinal split in the board which arrived to the customer in two long separate pieces. The glue failed in the split, and only part of the glued section had pieces of the other side adhered to it. Hard to say if it was a gluing defect or poor glue treatment after gluing. The wood was beautiful and smooth - but a re-glued bench top was not an option for us: the item was returned and Home Depot kindly picked it up at the customer location.

First one had to returned because of deep nicks and a 12" split in the butcher block. The second one had dents and nicks all over it. I refinished it myself because I needed it for a project. I still was not happy but had to deal with it. I would have been better off spending $50 more to get a higher quality product, many choices from others all over the internet. Since I do a lot of business with Home Depot it was just convenient to purchase here.

Ordered this Butcher Block Workbench from Home Depot after a lengthy search. We used it for a counter top in our laundry room remodel. It had the best grains and colors for our liking. Got it ahead of schedule was a great price and perfect size for our need. Sanded, varnished and installed, finished remodel in a weekend. I would recommend this product from Home Depot to anyone.

The only problem was it took 2 tries to get an acceptable top. the first one arrived spilt in half. The second one, which I used, had a small crack but I was able to use it by clamping it together and placing 3 braces across the bottom side. After varnishing the top it looks great.

Should have opened the box at the store. But Home Depot was very understanding and got us another on the way. It is solid and beautifully made. We are using it for a butcher block top on.

I am actually using for a kitchen island top. One side is nicer than the other, less knots and color variation. It does have more color variation than more expensive tops, like a Boos top. I actually like the more interesting grain of the #2 wood in this for a top though. The only issue with this is that homedepot, and those who handle it getting it to the store when you order it can't get it there with out putting a few dings and dents in it. I had to sand mine a bit to make it look a better in a few spots. One or two of the dings were deeper than I was going to sand, but are only noticeable if you're looking for defects after sanding. I was planning to sand it and put my own mineral oil and was on it that I know is food safe, since I'm not sure about the oil and wax that comes on it. So, sanding it a little more wasn't a big deal. At least not to me. Great solid top for the money, expect a few dings to clean up.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Nice craft desk top Came as advertised and shipped to store in just 3 days (way faster than the 2 week estimate). I made sure to open it at the store, as some people have had issues with serious damage, but mine looked great other than a ding along the side. Ding isn't very visible, and we figure it adds character. Makes a lovely craft desk top.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Good value for the money. Needs a bit of finish work. I purchased this for use on our kitchen Island to replace an antique butcher block that was not longer suitable for food prep due to cracking and separation. It arrive at the local store in less than the estimated time so that was great. When I got in home I opened the box to find that it was incredibly warped. I was very frustrated and began reboxing for return when I found instructions on how to straighten a warped butcher block. I followed the instructions by applying mineral oil strategically to the concave side. Within a few days I had it very close to straight (not perfect but you would never know by looking at it). The quality of the finish is not the best either. It really needs properly sanded and finished. It appears the manufacturer uses wood filler at the joints that are not perfect to hide flaws, and they either do no sanding or do a substandard job of sanding after cause it is very noticeable. All in all you can not buy this size butcher block anywhere for even close to the money for this one. Given that, with a bit of extra effort this product will suit my needs nicely.
