Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by BrewsterMom121 Great shelves for garage, shed or mud room!
I have 9 of the Edsal 36"W x 18"D X 72"H shelves in my 2-car garage that I assembled and positioned along the walls of the garage by myself! (I am a petite woman of 5'). The only tool needed is a rubber mallet. The only reason I did not give the product 5 stars is because after about 6 years some of the particle board shelves started to sag in the middle. My solution was to purchase ¾" plywood which I had Home Depot cut in store. The shelves are brand new again. Some of my shelves hold heavy items such as camping gear, tool boxes, power tools, etc. I would highly recommend this product. Super easy to assemble and highly durable.

Tricky to get the 2nd level verticals locked in, but once the unit is fully assembled, and the shelves are properly seated with a mallet, it's extremely sturdy. The thin particle board shelves are useless for heavy items, unless those items span from edge rail to edge rail. Otherwise, the shelves start sagging badly, especially if there's any humidity. I placed 5/8" plywood shelves on top of the particle board, and now have the unit loaded to near the rated capacity! If you do this, though, make sure you anchor the shelves to a wall or column to prevent serious injury should it ever be tipped with that kind of weight. Very satisfied.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by John Great product some flaws
The overall construction is very durable, but if you planning on stacking the shelves get something else that isn't two pieces. This isn't for you. The wood tops at flimsy pieces of MDF (medium density fiberboard) and should be replaced with 3/4" ply wood or something extremely durable to take a beating. Also it makes the top of the bench smooth and you don't snag your hands on the top steel edges. Other than all that, it's very nice.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Nancy Exactly what I wanted!
I ordered two of these shelf units, and love them! Had a little difficulty with my husband while putting them together, lol, but wow, are they sturdy and strong! Love that they hold so much weight. These are perfect for what I wanted...only now I want more! Highly recommend these!

This thing is hard to assemble. It requires a hammer. I started with a rubber mallet but the metal was slicing into the end of it and I couldn't really hit the thing hard enough to be effective. The guy that said he needed a 5lb sledge was correct. I didn't have one handy. Using a regular hammer the rails got bent/bungered a little bit but we were able to get it together. I had bought two and the second one in box is going back to the store. Spend a little more money if you can and get something better.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Wellspring Sturdy, but problems joining top & bottom
I've purchased at least 20 of these Edsal units in various sizes for myself, and for the women's center where I do maintenance work. They are very sturdy, and they assemble quite easily. The only problem, is attaching the upper half of the shelving units to the bottom. Some attach by simply bridging a shelf between the top and bottom, and some have clips. Neither solution is perfect, although I prefer the clips. I would prefer to bolt the top and bottom together using drilled shelf brackets to make the connection. I've never had a shelf unit collapse on me, but this top-bottom connection is definitely the "weakest link."

Shelving is very sturdy, and fairly easy to put together. The wood shelf itself is a little thin, but it seems to hold whatever I stack on it just fine. I also purchased a 48" wide unit and those shelves came painted black, while these were not painted at all.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Carollynn Sturdy, holds alot of weight
Shelves were fairly easy to assemble. Steel frame is very sturdy. I thought shelves were steel too but they are particle board. Still, shelves are very sturdy and hold a lot of weight.
