The overall construction is very durable, but if you planning on stacking the shelves get something else that isn't two pieces. This isn't for you. The wood tops at flimsy pieces of MDF (medium density fiberboard) and should be replaced with 3/4" ply wood or something extremely durable to take a beating. Also it makes the top of the bench smooth and you don't snag your hands on the top steel edges. Other than all that, it's very nice.

I ordered two of these shelf units, and love them! Had a little difficulty with my husband while putting them together, lol, but wow, are they sturdy and strong! Love that they hold so much weight. These are perfect for what I wanted...only now I want more! Highly recommend these!

For the price these units are a good deal. I purchased 4 of them. 2 are in my garage and hold tools and other garage stuff. The other 2 are in my home and hold my collections. I stained the particle board shelves walnut and they look pretty great. The combo has a sort of industrial chic look. I tested an oak stain on one of the garage units and it looks very nice as well. The shelves hold a good amount of weight without sagging. The only down side is that without the weight of a shelf, the removable metal pieces don't stay in very well. So that means having the rubber mallet handy when adjusting shelves.

Shelving is very sturdy, and fairly easy to put together. The wood shelf itself is a little thin, but it seems to hold whatever I stack on it just fine. I also purchased a 48" wide unit and those shelves came painted black, while these were not painted at all.

Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Wellspring Sturdy, but problems joining top & bottom
I've purchased at least 20 of these Edsal units in various sizes for myself, and for the women's center where I do maintenance work. They are very sturdy, and they assemble quite easily. The only problem, is attaching the upper half of the shelving units to the bottom. Some attach by simply bridging a shelf between the top and bottom, and some have clips. Neither solution is perfect, although I prefer the clips. I would prefer to bolt the top and bottom together using drilled shelf brackets to make the connection. I've never had a shelf unit collapse on me, but this top-bottom connection is definitely the "weakest link."

At first glance, I wasn't sure about this purchase. It doesn't require any tools to assemble. Everything seems to hook into place, and while we were assembling these, they seemed fragile and unstable but once we got it completely assembled, it wasn't as bad as we thought. They are actually fairly sturdy considering the materials they're made of. We had lots of paper-filled boxes to organize and after fitting 3 on each level (15 boxes per shelf unit), the shelves seemed even sturdier. It seems like the weight really helps secure it in place. These shelves seem like they will topple over easily if made top-heavy.
Also, the "wooden" part of it is made of what seems to be strong particle board... do NOT place anything wet on it because they will swell easily with moisture. This may become an issue for us since we live in Dallas, Texas (lots of humid days ahead...), and have these in a storage unit which is not climate controlled.
So far, they seem to work for us but I suppose time will tell...

The shelves will be useful to my needs. I wish that the frames were made a little sturdier or durable. Overall I am satisfied.
