Is the particle board shelf only supported by the four sides or is there also support of shelf in the cavity of the shelf frame. Do not want the shelf to belly out and fall thru the broken particle board..

Particle board shelves are ¼" thick.. After a while you will need to replace sagging shelves with ¾" plywood. Home Deport can cut the plywood to size in store.

Yes, it is only supported on the 4 sides. It is pretty strong though. I think it is rated to hold 800 lbs. per shelf.

The shelving is 3/8 " thick--Only supported by the lip on the four sides--I have one shelf with several cans of paint and see no sag in the shelf----I really don't have any serious weight other than that--The shelves are heavy and seem very strong--

If the shed gets damp, you might want to varnish or paint the shelves. Particle board doesn't like moisture much.

I've had my shelves in the garage for about 6 years now. I just replaced SOME of the particle board shelves with ¾" plywood that I had Home Depot cut to size in store. I replaced the shelves that were sagging in the middle,.

I've had mine in my garage for about 2 years with tools, etc., and they are going strong with no sagging. I wouldn't get them wet or damp though. I just bought another for in the house and stained the shelves a dark walnut and they took the stain well.

Answer:
Thank you for your inquiry. The particle board is probably not the best solution for an outdoor shed. The humidity and any possible moisture will warp the board. I would recommend our products with wire deck and or could replace the particle board and cut some solid wood boards.
I hope this helps you with you purchasing decision. Thanks

You would have to do a lot to make this thing casterable, and casters would make it more vulnerable to tipping and falling and it would limit the amount of weight you could handle on the shelving. They're not designed to be pushed side to side, so you'd first have to install cross-bracing to the back and sides. I think I'd put braces between the halves of the uprights to keep them together, too. Then you'd have to replace the bottom shelf with 3/4" plywood and drill holes in the 4 shelf brackets to attach the plywood to the brackets. Then you'd have to fix the bottom shelf supports to the uprights (bolt through top of keyhole and nut on the back--for all shelves.) Finally, you could install smallish casters, making sure they had room to swivel every direction. This will take the better part of a day, most likely. If you intend to load it down, I would not recommend going with casters. Read Less

Answer:
You cannot fit the casters to the shelving unit. But if the casters were large enough, you could replace the bottom shelf with ¾" plywood and then fit the casters to the bottom shelf (plywood). You would just need to make sure the casters are tall enough to clear the bottom racks.

CUSTOMER REVIEWS

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 111 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Nothing to write home about Firstly, I'd like to say the buying experience was great. Purchased online and had it shipped to my local store with no issues. As for the shelf itself, it's lacking in quality and strength. It went together fairly easy, with no drilling/screwing required, but the metal is extremely thin and poor quality. I'm unsure of how they can boast their current load rating, especially after examining the particle boards used in the shelf frame. My biggest concern is the metal braces are easily bendable. When I assembled the horizontal beams/supports, they were slightly bowed outward, leaving a 1/16" to 1/8" gap between the support and the shelf board. Given that the perch that the board rests on is a mere 1/2" (or less), this meant that even less of the support perch was actually making contact with the shelf board. I attempted to "straighten" the cross beams/supports, but that placed the rivets out of spec and didn't allow the pieces to come together as designed. If I were to suggest an enhancement, it would be to add a cross support between the parallel beams, essentially tying the middles together to prevent outward bowing/flexing. There's enough room to do this, so I'm going to drill a few holes and run a thin piece of flat stock. It should increase the rigidity and ensure that the entire perch of the beams/supports are in contact with the board. I might try to weld the vertical supports together as well, seeing as how one simply rests on top of the other and is secured only by one of the two rivets of the cross beams/supports. Maybe I'm just picky... maybe it's Maybelline. June 21, 2016

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Perfect Shelving unit Great for want I needed, used as two (2) different and shorter shelving units side by side. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Easy Assembly Sturdy shelf, easy to assemble, perfect for my heavy storage items May 11, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Pretty good for the price In the end, a great shelving unit, but put it together in the area you'll be using it or it may come apart when you relocate it. It really is very easy to assemble (did it solo), however there are two sections that join together for the height, and while the weight of items on the shelves ensure it won't come apart, it's a little dicey keeping them together with any movement until then. Once in place and in use, though, it is very sturdy and serves its purpose well. Because it rains robustly here a few months each year and my garage walls have openings that do allow water/moisture to enter, I sealed each shelf with spar varnish (often used in marine applications). I expect this item to last me a very long time! March 15, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great sturdy shelf Took a little bit of time and carefully holding pieces together to slot the shelves onto the vertical bars and assemble the product. Great sturdy shelf once assembled. The position of the shelves is adjustable except for the center one, which holds the top and bottom part together. It is technically possible to assemble the product with fewer shelves than in the package, but it might compromise the stability. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for storage of simple things. I have seen people review this product giving it low ratings in the weight load department. If you plan on holding really heavy weight, refer to those reviews. I purchased this item for simply organizing a few things in my basement. It is perfect and sturdy for my needs. I have a lot of stuff to be stored, not so much heavy items. This provides a lot of space per shelf and is very tall. I recommend this for clothes, shoes, files/papers, books, toys, etc. March 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Solid shelves, good flexibility Great option for an affordable, sturdy shelving unit. The flexibility to use as a tall shelf, workbench, or 2 short shelves is great. It takes a little balancing act or a third hand to assemble the two halves, but they are solid once together. The only downside is the shelf boards are kind of flimsy depending on what you are planning to store on them, but for the price, it's not a deal breaker. Some thicker plywood or MDF does the trick.
