You do not need bolts. They are designed to be put together in a few minutes using a rubber mallet. The parts sort of snap into place.

I would suggest running a 1x4 along the wall where it would sit - attach the 1x4 to the studs in at least
2 places in wall.........., then run a screw that has a head larger than slot and anchor it to wall on both back upright rails between 3rd & 4th shelves, paint 1x4 to match your wall, I have done this with hanging curtains, racks etc and with a 1x4 painted to match wall it's not distracting but works better than a molly for heavy things

I have just recently installed 15 of these units in the garage and cellar in different configurations. Note that one cannot move these by picking up these shelves by the horizontal parts (beams and braces) or they will come apart. On a thick carpet the posts will sink into it, they will be immoveable. If you need extra parts, Yankee Supply has them, I also found them on Amazon for about $11 each. Good luck. Read Less

Either way you would need to tether these shelves to the wall, especially if you plan to put the tanks on the upper 2 shelfs. You can purchase tether devices that are used to prevent flatscreen TVs from falling off furniture / stands.

Bill --
That's a tough question and you'll probably get various opinions. I'll give you mine: There is a tipping hazard with any shelf unit where weight is placed higher on the unit and when you position it on a surface that isn't rock stable, like carpet. Assuming the tanks are on the two bottom shelves, you would probably be ok. Even so, depending upon the thickness of the carpet nap and the thickness and density of the padding under it, there will likely be a tendency for the shelf unit to rock a bit if it's touched. It would take some effort to push it over, but the water in the tanks could slosh. If you put the tanks on the two middle shelves, the center of gravity is that much higher which means greater risk. Whether that matters depends upon who is around the area and the likelihood of someone (or a pet) coming into contact with the shelf unit. Also, the motion that would be imparted to the water in the tanks from bumping the shelf would be greater.
One suggestion would be to remove the "carpet factor" by buying or making some small spiked feet to put under the legs of the shelf unit, so that the weight is transferred through the carpet to the subfloor. They used to make these to keep furniture from damaging carpet; I'm not sure if they're still made. A small piece of wood with nails or screws sticking through around the perimeter would accomplish the same thing, although you would want to find a good way to lock the shelf unit feet on top to ensure they never slid off. The commercial plastic versions had a recess in the top for furniture legs.
Good luck! Read Less

Answer:
You could overlap the corner supports, buy or find some small nuts and bolts, and bolt them together... but they are made to be in alignment, and that would shorten the unit and be unnecessarily tacky. I'm surprised the manufacturer left the couplers out of the box. Why not just take the unit back and exchange it? If it was a discounted open box or something, the manufacturer can supply extra parts.

I don't know what you mean by "couplers." the slats that you put in to hold the wood shelf have the piece on them that hooks into the shelving. There are no separate small pieces.

Yes, but in a different configuration. They can be assembled without couplers at a height of 36". Actually you can make two 36" units using the parts from one 72" shelving unit. Beams and braces (horizontal shelf supports) are sometimes on Amazon from $10-$12 each (hardly a bargain). When you get the couplers and are ready to assemble, take a hammer and depress the middle portion of each side of the coupler so that when you hammer position it on the post it does not go on too far. I recently purchased about 17 of these units and have assembled them in various configurations to suit my needs. I recommend you look over the questions and answers from other posters prior to assembly for tips and ideas. Good luck. . Read Less

Rated 3.6 out of 5 by 150 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good sturdy shelves Some reviewers noted missing parts in the box. My sealed carton had an extra horizontal support piece, and no instructions, which was not a problem because the picture on the carton showed how it went together. Like others, a couple of the couplers slid too far down the vertical piece. I held the vertical piece in a vice, put a block of wood against the edge of the coupler, and tapped the opposite edge of the block with a hammer to move the coupler to the correct position. I then used a C-clamp to keep the coupler from moving while I put in on the shelving unit. The bottom shelf can be easily reinforced by putting some approximately 1.5" wood blocks on the floor under it. I'll probably put plywood on the next two shelves, and not worry about the top shelf, as it is too high for me to store heavy objects.. August 29, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by I am unhappy with this purchase. It is not at all what I was expecting. I have purchased similar 48 inch shelves before and your 36 inch shelves are inferior by comparison, The shelves are not as deep There are only 4 shelves instead of 5 shelves. They are shorter in height. They are cheaper in construction. I will be looking to return them August 30, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by extra pantry After assembling the rack I realized that the shelves were made of pressed wood. For what I'm stacking it with it will work out fine. I wouldn't recommend it for heavy mechanical greasy items. April 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by 60 in. H x 36 in. W x 18 in. D 4-Shelf Steel Commercial Shelving Unit in Gray went together very easy and was easy to modify to fit August 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good Quality Utility Shelving At this price I didn't expect precision assembly, but was pleasantly surprised that I only needed a hard rubber mallet to assemble. A large screwdriver helped to align the bottom frame holes with the connectors, but I only needed it because I assembled the units so quickly. A little more care and the pieces would have aligned on their own! August 30, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Shelf Unit for Home While it says commercial this is more like a high end home unit. Easy to assemble without tools but a rubber mallet was useful to set some parts into their holes. Nice deep shelf so things don't fall off. The particle board shelfs are rather thin and bow a bit. I chose to replace them with plywood I had at home which is why I rated it 4 stars. Very satisfied for what I plan to store on the shelves in my closet. June 28, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Investment These shelving units are a great investment. You can assemble them in minutes and transforms your space into a much more efficient and organized storage room. July 20, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by easy to put together This shelving is real easy to put together. We bought one last year and ended up buying another one. The only this I would say if you're going to be storing liquids on this, i.e. kids' bubbles or weed killer, to put something on top of the shelf in case of any spills. This type of material will soak up the liquid and greatly affect the integrity of the shelf. June 14, 2016
