It takes two people to assemble the unit in order to align all the holes, but the process is pretty straightforward--just screwing in a lot of bolts. Our package was missing two nuts, but we were able to substitute two that we had on hand. Do not tighten the bolts all the way until all four sides of a shelf are lined up because you have to have some give in order to get the holes aligned. Once it's together, the unit is easy to move, and it doesn't take up too much space on the side of my garage. You can fit two bankers boxes on each shelf with a little space in between for odds & ends. I have had a similar unit for more than 30 years, and I expect this one to last that long as well.

It is advertised as heavy duty and it is. I assembled it myself since I am more mechanical and patient that my "philosophical" husband. He did use his muscles to tighten the screws. One side I could not install the screws. My husband knew what to do and did it without effort, just a matter of a little jiggle and some pressure. The upper shelf was a bit difficult, he loosen the other screws on that shelf and was able to screw the one corner that was giving us trouble.

I should have known not to buy from Home Depot… or is it Edsal?
It wasn't the quality i expected. AND Its a good thing i have a cordless drill because several of the holes didn't line up and i had to ream them out to get the bolts in. After it was all assembled it was at least sturdy but i did screw it to the wall AND it isn't exactly level either!

The packaging was a low-grade carton (had to return the first order as it had missing parts) and there were no instructions on how to assemble. Extremely difficult to assemble. It cost me a lot for the handyman's time to complete the job.

Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Flatchance Low Quality Item!
Product arrived at store in a carton that had been previously opened, materials were of very poor quality, shelves were not bent straight on ends making installation near impossible. The uprights were in two pieces and the piece sent to bolt them together had only one bolt hole on each side so the uprights would not hold in a straight line. The uprights were wider at one end than the other. Virtually every item was scratched. Even the brace bars were in 2 pieces. Basically this unit is junk. For me it was a replacement for some 20 year old Edsel shelving and all I needed were 2 of the shelves as I used the post pieces horizontally across the back for braces and re-used my previous posts (they used to be a good company). I was just putting my stand up compressor under it and needed the shelves to hold supplies and I had to have 15" deep shelves to fit behind the garage door tracks.

This is your basic industrial metal shelving. It does take longer to assemble as everything is held together with 1/4" bolts. In the long run this gives a much stronger unit than the snap together type. All the hardware and braces are included. You will provide the screwdriver and 7/16" wrench for assembly. The shelves are solid stamped steel, everything has a nice dark gray finish. It is easy to add hardboard sides or back to enclose the unit. I have been using same type of shelving for over 30 years with no apparent change in the design except the upright brackets are split and have to be bolted together now. The bolt together design also allows different shelving configurations to be connected together for more strength.

This shelving system did not work for my family. When we put the shelves together, the whole shelf leaned to the left. We made sure that the screws were tight and even moved the bracing to different areas along the sides and back. It still leaned and my husband was able to twist the frame. Another frustrating aspect of the product was the instructions were a list of the items in the box, a picture of the assembled shelving system, and the instructions 'Assemble pieces together.'

We recently installed six more Edsel metal shelves in our school library. These shelves are inexpensive, strong and safe when attached to each other and or the wall. With a piece of louan board slid into the sides, they are attractive and functional. We needed six shelves in each unit, so we just purchased extra shelving and split it up. We think our library is just perfect. Thanks Edsel!
