Steel or Wood?

The pictures and description say Steel Shelving. What am I gonna get when I order this?

Shelf surface

Hello, I've seen Edsal offer "premium" particle shelves that have a smooth, black laminate covering at Lowe's before. However, now they only offer the standard grey, faux wood grain shelves which have a rougher finish, etc. In the pictures, these appear to have a smooth, black surface - can anyone verify? I want to get a second unit that will match my first, but I can't tell the real texture of these shelves based on the photos. Thanks!

Is the surface wood or steel? Based on the reviews, it appears to be a wood surface, but this is not mentioned in the specifications.

If I set this up as two 36" high units, side by side, will the top shelves be smooth with no protrusions?

I want to set this up for folding laundry on the top shelf and storing laundry products on the bottom shelves. I don't want to have something that would snag clothing or other laundered materials on the top shelf. My intent is to secure the two 36" units by drilling holes in the legs or posts and attaching the two with fasteners.
Asked by: Ray
No. There will be approx 1/2" of the vertical "C - Post" sticking up above the top shelf itself. You could cover the top edge of the posts with a rubber cap or something similar and it might be OK.

I've had this unit set up for several months now, seeing the flimsy shelves I decided to augment with 3/4 inch plywood underneath the black "whatever it is" shelves. the shelves have about 400 lbs on them and now the metal is bowing. How they can claim 1000lb shelf capacity is beyond me. Now I'm stuck with a worthless shelving unit, I thought I was good at half load, and I'm worried about failure. I keep aquariums with freshwater shrimp on the shelves (4 10 gallon tanks on each). It looks beefy but it is only good for the lightest loads over time.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Great shelf for the price, but not without flaws I love this shelf. It went together easily with only a rubber mallet. I've purchased these types of shelves before so I already knew how to assemble it. 30 minutes by myself and it was done. I opted for the two piece setup instead of one tall one. Two shelves on one and 3 on the other. The metal was in good condition upon delivery but without opening the box, I knew the shelves were broken. One corner of the box was smashed in. All 5 partial board shelves had a damaged corner, hence the 3 star review. That said I called homedepot.com support and within two weeks they sent me replacements. In all honestly, I put the shelves together with the damaged pieces and just put the broken corners in the back. These are in my garage so I wasn't worried about it and now I have spare!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from I recommend the product itself, but not the packing of the shelves. I've read other reviews and ... I recommend the product itself, but not the packing of the shelves. I've read other reviews and everyone mentioned how poorly the packing is for such heavy materials. I had parts missing because the boxes were falling apart, but there was a phone number included that you could order missing parts. The phone number they provide is a "leave a message" number so I called the main number for Edsal and asked for customer service and the parts were mailed to me, at no charge, within 5 days or so. I ordered 2 units and my husband and I bought cypress boards to make an industrial look bookcase with storage for his memorabilia room and it turned out great.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Strong shelving, bad packaging This is much stronger than the particle board shelving unit they sell in the stores. I love the shelving. Unfortunately, the packaging is horrible. The first two arrived with the boxes all torn up. One was missing key pieces so they had to reorder it. Third arrived torn up as well and was missing even more pieces. I finally had to get one of the units in stock at the store, which aren't as good. If they made better boxes, these would be amazing. I recommend these, if you don't mind going through a couple orders to finally get units with the right parts.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Good product, bad packaging Overall, the unit was easy to put together and works well. A hammer was the only tool required. It is sturdy once I put it together. The first one I received was all beaten up and chipped due to bad packaging. The company needs to protect the product with better packaging. I sent it back and got another one. Once again, packaging was beaten up and the box was taped together. There were a few nicks, but nothing major for use in a garage. It was missing a couple pieces. I called the company and they shipped the missing pieces right away.

The thin cardboard box was torn and crushed during transit such that 6 of the long brackets and corner braces were bent. HD was great and ordered us a new one. When that arrived, the box was in a similar state: torn, crushed, extra packaging tape etc. That box also had a few bent pieces. HD allowed me to take both boxes to build one full shelving unit. Also the wooden shelves are pretty thin and I fear that it cannot hold the weight that is specified. a cross brace would be helpful to really support the weight. I do not recommend this shelving unit. Once assembled it is fairly sturdy but the shelves are thinner than I feel comfortable with. I just assembled them so I'll see if they hold up. If not, I'll replace the shelves with thicker plywood as the metal frame is robust.

I will say, the sturdiness of these shelves is only minimized by the ease of assembly. I highly highly highly recommend these. They go together very easily, but are very heavy duty and will stand up to alot of weight. My only other comment has to do with one that I did see from others posted....the packaging. I actually bought these shelves online after viewing them in a local store, but they are very heavy. I wanted them delivered so that I could basically open up the package and move the shelves piece by piece down into my basement. The outer packaging of these shelves is ridiculous. They might as well just tape a water proof tarp over the darned things, and ship them that way! The boxes were extremely beat up, open in several places. Luckily, all parts were accounted for. Several shelves were also slightly damaged, but for me, they are going in my basement for organizational storage, and I just do not care about that. Others might.
