Hello, I've seen Edsal offer "premium" particle shelves that have a smooth, black laminate covering at Lowe's before. However, now they only offer the standard grey, faux wood grain shelves which have a rougher finish, etc.

In the pictures, these appear to have a smooth, black surface - can anyone verify? I want to get a second unit that will match my first, but I can't tell the real texture of these shelves based on the photos. Thanks!

I have purchased both Edsal's 24x48x72 shelving units, they are exactly the same size. The model MR482472BLB has black laminate covering on the shelf while the other model UR-245WGB, although costing more and stressed for less but constructed from a heavier gage steel, has top sided wood grain laminated covering over particle board (sides are not covered) which is not as strong as that in the first model Read More

While I couldn't tell you if the surface of this shelf matches with the shelf you have, I can say that your description of the surface seems very similar to the surface of this shelf.

When you place them horizontally can they be separated? What I mean is if I wanted one half in this room and the other half in another room, can I?

Yes - they should come with 8 vertical struts and 6 shelves so it can effectively work as 2 separate 3-shelf 24x48x36in units.

If I set this up as two 36" high units, side by side, will the top shelves be smooth with no protrusions?

I want to set this up for folding laundry on the top shelf and storing laundry products on the bottom shelves. I don't want to have something that would snag clothing or other laundered materials on the top shelf. My intent is to secure the two 36" units by drilling holes in the legs or posts and attaching the two with fasteners.

Thank you for your question. There actually will be a protrusion at the post as the top will not be 100% flush. It will be approximately 1/2".
I hope that helps you with your purchasing decision.
Thanks

Answer:
Hello Ford,
The cabinets will be more of less flush through do to manufacturing anomalies not perfectly in line. As long as you're prepared to take a couple extra minutes to do some work leveling the units you should be able to get the desired effect. I hope this helps.
Cheers,
Chris

Is the surface wood or steel? Based on the reviews, it appears to be a wood surface, but this is not mentioned in the specifications.

Rated 3.9 out of 5 by 40 reviewers.
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Couldn't Use When we went to put the shelf together, we realized it was missing the "couplers." In the box is the notice saying "If missing parts do not return to store. Call us first" so we called (had to wait until Monday though because they are only open M-F 8-5 CST) and they shipped us the missing couplers. A week and half later the couplers arrived, but wouldn't fit the shelf. We called back and they apologized saying it must have been an anomaly, confirmed the model etc. and resent us 4 new couplers. Another week and half later the new couplers arrived and didn't fit either. We ended up having to return the shelf to Home Depot. July 10, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Value Shelving Assembled with ease and performs perfectly. The best dollar return over competing units. August 2, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Roll the dice I bought 2 - one arrived with all the parts, one was missing one shelf and 2 brackets both boxes arrived on time but in fairly beat-up condition - I can live without the shelf as I need to make the 6ft tall version (you can make side-by-side 3ft versions as well). More than 2 weeks later I'm still waiting for the missing parts to arrive - I had an unclear phone call from someone (not sure if manufacturer or HD) asking about the missing parts - so clearly they haven't shipped yet. The one that was complete was fairly straight-forward to put together (no instructions in either box) and is sturdy and does the job well. I guess it's a bit a of a gamble as to whether you get the whole product or not and hopefully the (right) parts I need will arrive. July 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Organization = Happiness We are really happy with our purchase. We bought 5 of these for our garage and we can finally see the floor again. They were relatively easy to put together using a rubber mallet and fit nicely along the walls. The instructions say to anchor them, which we did not know ahead of time. We skipped this part because they are mostly holding plastic bins, but I think it's an important thing to know ahead of time. August 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Looks nice, sturdy, happy overall Looks nice, sturdy, happy overall. The four corner vertical poles look quite better than the other ones where the holes are exposed. July 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Older Shelfs Were Better I purchased some of these shelf units a few years ago and was a bit surprised by the lower quality of the newer shelves I recently purchased. The newer shelves are a good quality shelf but the older shelves were an excellent quality in my opinion. They newer shelves also require more effort to assemble. Both the older and newer shelves are quite strong and will do the job. July 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great Shelving This very sturdy. My wife and I put them together easily with just a rubber mallet. July 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Wood shelves Biggest complaint is that I thought it had steel shelves, but they are wood. The shelves were chipped a little bit on the edges and the packaging looked like it had been through a hurricane when I picked it from the store. Pretty easy to assemble using a rubber mallet.
