What is the purpose of the hole in the side of the tub ?

I'm planning on installing the faucet in the wall projecting over the side of the tub. Can this hole be used as an overflow if that's not its intended purpose ?

What is the maximum water depth ?

My customer is very concerned about being able to soak her whole body comfortably. How deep is the water from the bottom of the tub to the underside of the overflow hole ? I understand that the tub depth is 26" but it will be less than that considering the overflow.
