Answer:
Yes. If you close your damper and operate a vented log set, serious soot will build up and carbon monoxide will enter your living space...just like a real wood burning fire.

Hi procrastinator,
Yes, you are correct in assuming that vented gas logs are to be only used in a fireplace with an operable chimney.
Yes, there is danger of carbon monoxide poisoning if the damper is not open during operation.
Vented gas logs produce carbon monoxide. Treat them exactly like a wood fire and open the damper fully whenever there is a fire in the fireplace.

Hello procrasinator, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
You must use this product in a vented fireplace. Vents must be open during operation. In some states, installation requires that the damper be completely removed or welded open.
I hope this helps,
Chris.

Instructions are not very good, but the installation is straight forward. I had to purchase a two foot flexible gas hose. Logs look good. Remote works fine. The price is right. Highly recommend. Here's a tip. Make sure you have the burner placement correct before you add the vermiculite and glowing embers. I moved mine around and the pilot flame kept extinguishing when I pushed the remote on button. This was due to the rush of gas blowing out the pilot. Be sure the burners are covered completely with the vermiculite.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from 24" logs Works and looks great. Love the remote control on/off. The only down side is there no allowance for adjusting flame height. It is simply one setting and either on or not. Having said that, it is what we were looking for and we live in the south and little use for fireplace as a heat source and need to adjust. We are are very pleased. Also, the large log was broken when it arrived so I called hd right away. They contacted manufacturer and they shipped out a new log immediately.

Shipping package did not say they were fragile. Decided to live with this since they were back logs. Then, we realized after installation, which we paid for, the location of the pilot light in the center of the logs causes the air in the vent to constantly suck the pilot light out. Previous logs, had for 20 years, had pilot near left front, never had a priblem with air sucking it out. This constant problem renders them useless to us. Bought them because of the remote for easy on/off. Sad to realize this unexpected design problem with the location of the pilot. Bought themn as a Christmas present for my husband. They were installed on 12/27/2016. I will return them.

We really enjoy the our new Gas Log set we put in our existing wood burning fireplace. It was nice to find a set that had the propane conversion kit included. The instructions are not very clear and I did have to buy a gas pipe extension, due to the line coming in from the left side instead of the right that it is designed for. The remote works very well. The only thing I would change, is the ability to have an igniter rather than a pilot light. Great Product that make a fantastic fire!!!

I'm a mechanical engineer and I didn't have a lot of trouble installing the unit. Having said that, I did have to refer to the instructions frequently but all the information was there. Just be sure you don't mix the ones for natural gas with the ones for propane as they are sort of commingled. It is very important to pay close attention to the pictures in the instructions as they provide the clues on how to position the burner pan and the support grate. The text doesn't say much about this part. The remote didn't work at first until pushed the " learn" button on the receiver. The specs indicate that the unit produces 60,000 BTUs. Most of those are going up the flue. Not much comes into the room. They really aren't kidding when they describe it as a "decorative" fire log. Other than that it works.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Very pretty and realistic This log set is really pretty and the material used to create a burning ember affect is amazing. The small number 4 log was broken in two pieces but my husband epoxied it and it's just fine for now. I'm having trouble reaching the manufacturer to ask them to send another but it may just be the season. We shall see. Overall I think this is one of our better purchases this year.

Got it before Christmas so we could enjoy it over the holidays; had it professionally installed for safety, but it never worked right. It just shuts itself off after a few minutes, and we never got the remote to work, at all. Will be talking to Home depot about this; if they can get it working I may keep it, otherwise it's going back.
