Answer:
Yes. If you close your damper and operate a vented log set, serious soot will build up and carbon monoxide will enter your living space...just like a real wood burning fire.

Hello procrasinator, I’m Chris from the Home Depot’s how-to Community. Thank you for your question.
You must use this product in a vented fireplace. Vents must be open during operation. In some states, installation requires that the damper be completely removed or welded open.
I hope this helps,
Chris.

I like the log set, but the pilot seems really strong, lighting the room and loud. Is it possible to turn it down?

My fireplace is 29 in wide at front, 20 in at back, 15 in deep, and 15 in tall. Will this set fit or be too big?

Answer:
It looks as though you are 2 inches too small on width. The remote control receiver makes this set wider than most 24" sets. You may want to consider a thermostatically controlled set like models TCVFT24NL which is similar in appearance; or model OVT22NG or OVT22LP (depending on gas type).

Is there a air mixture valve to reduce the sooting? It seems to spill out and stain the tile and mantel.

Answer:
If soot is coming out of the fireplace, there could be a number of reasons: Fireplace is too small for this unit; The flue isn't large enough (8" diameter); Adequate ventilation from flue all the way through chimney opening. Clean chimney.

Customer Reviews

Rated 3.3 out of 5 by 15 reviewers.
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Gas Fireplace insert This insert was very easy to install, and it looks better than most kits installed. The remote functions well and the appearance of the fire looks just like a wood fire. February 17, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Good stuff I was a little skeptical after reading some of the reviews. The two biggest problems I was seeing were the logs being broken upon arrival and the pilot light being large. The pilot light seems perfectly normal to me compared to sets we've had in the past. I can't see it or hear it. The two largest logs were broken upon arrival, but I made a quick call to the manufacturer and they had replacement logs at my house within a week no questions asked. The reason I give them 4 stars is because of the broken logs (since it's such a problem, they should package them better) and the instruction manual. I'm decently handy so we figured it out, but the instructions are vague at best. All in all, they seem to be a quality product and they look great. Incredibly realistic. March 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by A gift to myself The unit was easy to install and assemble. Gives out a excellent amount of warmth, and makes the whole room feel cozy Remote lighter works instantly every time. December 11, 2014
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by Not the best purchase we've made The remote part of the gas fireplace set is awesome; however, we rec'd this just a few days before Christmas, one of the logs was already broken and since then two more have broken. Too much hassle to disassemble and return it so we're keeping it, but I would NOT recommend it to anyone January 13, 2016
Rated 2.0 out of 5.0 by no support from Factory I purchased this as a Christmas gift. Everything looked good in terms of finish, but when I attempted to connect the gas valve to the remote unit I found the remote had a four pin connector while the gas valve had two knife connectors. I emailed the factory twice and never received a response. Called factory twice and could not get anyone on the phone. Left two voice messages and never received a return call. Returned the product and will purchase from different manufacturer January 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good product. Shipping damage Product looks good. Had three logs broken in shipping. Ordered from manufacturer new logs. Still waiting for replacement parts. Not to happy about that. January 5, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great purchase! We love our fireplace -- keeps us warm and looks beautiful in our living room! December 22, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Appalachian Oak fire logs Logs looked great but had to return them to the store before installation as the copper tubing was crimped and the gas would not go through so I never got to see them burn. November 22, 2015
