As a person that services gas logs you do not want a set of logs that have to be manually lite every time. THEY ARE DANGEROUS, how ??
If a child were to turn the gas on and there is nothing to ignite the gas, like a standing pilot flame, you could possibly have an explosion. Most higher pliced logs have a gas valve with standing pilot are as they are called safety pilot.

Answer:
The gas supply line must have a shut-off valve. It is a matter of turning on the valve and igniting the gas with a lighter or match by placing it under the logs. Once the logs are "burning", it is just a matter of adjusting the gas supply to achieve your desired fireplace setting/appearance.

Answer:
Yes the unit is a manual lit burner which requires match or "aim-n-flame" lighter. You can purchase a separate pilot kit for standing pilot operation (models CVS-303 or RVS-304). The RVS-304 is a pilot with remote control.

Answer:
Ah yes you do have to light it with a fireplace match, unless your gas connection has an automatic ignition. The base of the logs is the burner that is attached to the gas line. When you turn on the gasline [mine is one of the little cranks next to the fireplace], you simply light the fireplace match over the log set and it will ignite, and then you can adjust the flame size at your on/off crank.

For me, I'm chicken of all ignition--I light my gas grille only when I have steaks :) so I admit that I place the match over the log closest to the burner bar and let it go. Normal people would just hold it there.
Hope that helps! Read Less

Are you just getting the logs, or does this include the grate and vermiculite as shown in every photo?

Answer:
What you see in the picture is what comes in the kit. It also includes a pan to hold the sand which disperses the gas to create a "field" so that the flames will disperses around the logs. It is very realistic and looks just like real logs burning. It has fooled all of our house guests who have seen it!

You get everything needed. Grate, burner, rock granules, glowing embers, standard gas connection materials. Vermiculite typically only comes in vent free log sets. It is sold as an accessory if you prefer on this vented set.

Answer:
Hi dhalism2,
These gas logs are best when used in a traditional, single facing firebox.
Unfortunately, this manufacturer does not make a gas log set for use in double-sided, or see through fireplaces.
Thank you for asking,
-Travis

No. It is only for 1-sided fireplaces. Sure Heat does not currently offer a double-sided gas log set. My apologies.

There is a pan that holds the "embers" as well as some sand to create a "gas field" underneath the assesmbly. It is not visible in the illustration but it extends upward on the back side and is hidden by the log placement.
Possibly, if you were to buy extra logs to cover the back side of the log unit, it could work if you are up to the added investment.

Answer:
I believe they can as it would be the same situation except outside. However, you might want to find just the logs themselves since this is a kit that comes with all that is needed to set up a fireplace. You will end paying for extra pieces that you may not need for an outside set-up.

This set is not recommended to be exposed to outdoor elements. Mainly due to the burner components (not necessarily the logs).

Rated 4.5 out of 5 by 182 reviewers.
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Nice Price Nice log set and quality is average, but instructions show a shutoff valve in the parts list, however there is only an adapter from 1/2" pipe tread to the gas flared line that is included to hook up the log burner. The gas connection line is smooth aluminum pipe and would be very hard to bend into the shape necessary to hook up without kinking it. I am using it in a rental and decided I needed the added safety of a pilot light. They should update the instructions to show there is no shutoff valve included. I could have bought a valve and better flared gas line set and the safety pilot kit like others have suggested but why not take that added cost and just get a better log set. It should have came with what the instructions show in the parts list, so three stars instead of four. October 20, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This was my third fireplace insert over the years, and probably the best. Nothing had broken in shipping. The logs are made of a ceramic like material. and realistic. I measured my fireplace, so the feature is centered with equal margins around it. We have tried it twice in three weeks, all works fine.Bending the gas supply pipe was easy by hand. October 25, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by Missing parts Took about a week to recieve. Missing bag of screws and small parts. All the logs look really nice. Bummed I have to wait for replacement parts before can enjoy.. October 15, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by nice looking nice looking , easy to install, metal gasline that comes with product, is very thin, careful when bending and watch for kinks. I used a tube bender and tube still had one kink, minor but still there. also be ready to buy move brass fittings to complete install. placement is key!!! September 27, 2016
Rated 3.0 out of 5.0 by fireplace ceramic logs and lighter One of the cast iron support pieces was miscast. we had to contact them for a replacement which meant we had to bring the plumber back for a second time. Poor quality control July 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good looks for a reasonable price I wasn't sure if I would like gas logs but at the price I felt that there was little to lose trying them. The package arrived and everything was in excellent shap as the box was well packed. I installed them myself and I feel that any reasonably handy person could do this. Placing the "glowing embers" rock wool was not too difficult but I found that I had to light the fire, look at how the embers were working and then readjust them until I was satisfied with their appearance. The logs themselves look pretty good. I find that keeping the spark screen closed when the fire is lit makes it look more realistic. The only thing missing is the crackling wood sound. Overall, I am more than satisfied with this product. February 12, 2015
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Just fine Works good , good price, I shopped around and am happy. Great price. I didn't believe other reviews on difficulty of placing logs, but it is true. After I installed the included metal side supports on included log grate/rack, I gave up using directions for log placement and just pulled up color photo on computer and looked at it and replicated. Logs have turned white and black in middle where fire is hottest, but it is ok cuz looked like burned wood and ash. I was hoping I could arrange logs to make wider than 18 inches but you can't really. Definitely max 18 inch wide with flames mostly in center 12 inches or so March 29, 2013
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Excellent value! I have found this to be an excellent product. Since a pilot lit, remote and thermostatically controlled gas log is useless during a power outage, I wanted the basic gas log. This product has fit the bill exactly as I wanted and expected. The set came complete and without damage. I found the install instructions to be comprehensive and easy to understand. We use our log almost every evening here in SD and find it helps create a warm and homey atmosphere. The dual burner generates plenty of heat with the valve at 1/4 open. I'd definitely recommend this unit to any home handy person. December 1, 2012
