Answer:
This model does not have a pilot light and needs to be manually lit. You hold a match or long lighter lit over the gas line as you slowly turn the gas on.

Answer:
This is a manual-light vented set so it does not come with a pilot. You simply turn the gas on with your supply key while holding a match or long lighter to the base of the burner pan. Control flame height with your gas key as well.

Answer:
Hello Denny,
A chimney is actually preferred with a "Vented" log set. As long as it has a working flue and a damper clamp is used (provided).

Do all of these smell bad when lit?

We just moved into a house where they were previously installed. I think they were fairly new, the box is out in the garage. They smell awful and have quickly become covered in black soot. I don't remember previous gas logs looking like that.

Answer:
They do tend to have an odor during the initial few hours of operation. The mfg claims this goes away after "a few hours of burning on high" and they recommend opening windows for awhile. This is a "vented" log set so make sure your chimney flue is open. It must remain open during operation. Your previous set could have been "vent free" which operate differently.

Answer:
No. This is a manual vented log set. It is what is considered a "match-lit" operation. There are 2 pilot kits available. the CVS-303 or the RVS-304 (remote controlled).

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Broken Parts, Bad whistling sound Unfortunately, the package arrived with three of the seven 'logs' broken in shipment which seems to be not uncommon. They are being replaced free of charge. The burner is installed and produces a LOUD whistling sound. To operate, gas valve needs to be turned back by over 60%. When I called customer service, I was told that there are no adjustments that can be made and that my gas pressure must be too high. My gas pressure is within the required limits for the product. For now, I have a weak, non-whistling gas fire. Not sure what my next step is. Unfortunate.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from A nice fire log set I just bought two of these 24-inch gas fire log sets and I like them a lot with one minor exception - the aluminum gas line provided with the fire log set. I did not feel it would withstand the sharp 180 degree bend that was required in my installation, even if I had used the recommended sand to prevent a tubing collapse during bending (you are to fill the tube with sand prior to bending it); I purchased a flexible gas line instead. The directions for log placment are not clear and addressed only 6 of the 7 logs, but that is a minor gripe as this isn't rocket science. The other nit to pick is that the instructions were full of typos and incomplete words. I do like that the set came with a gas valve, pipe dope, the "glowing ember" rock wool, and the coarse rock for the burner tray (the other big box hardware store did not appear to include those items in their sets). When I fired up the logs they worked very well with nice, well spread out flames and a realistic appearance. An unexpected bonus was that the included the rock material used in the burner tray makes crackling sounds typical of wood fires as it heats up. Finally, I had no problems with the metal knockout in the burner tray (I supported the tray over a slightly open vice and used a hammer and center punch to knock out the metal in one blow). As a point of reference for those reading this, I am a very picky consumer who does all of the repairs and improvements on my home because no one can meet my standards. One final recommendation is that anyone with this fire log set or any other fuel-burning aplliance in their home should have an operating carbon monoxide detector as well.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Great value for the price We bought this set at our local store. No broken logs, as others have complained about. Installation was relatively easy except for one part. (See below.) I guess the manufacturer has fixed the instructions, as I didn't notice any typos, unlike past reviewers. The logs look and work great. The steel wool embers add a nice touch. You'll probably want to buy some crushed lava rock to surround the burner tray and make it look more realistic, though. Definitely recommend this product! One nit, which a few others have mentioned as well: the included bendable 3/8 aluminum pipe is not worth messing with, IMO. I went out and bought an 18" flex pipe instead.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Very realistic. Easy to set up. The product arrived with one of the logs broken and another split two days after use. However, a call to the company to replace the logs was easy and efficient. The overall ambiance that the log set created was very realistic and created a cozy atmosphere. The glowing embers are a particularly nice feature.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Log burner a wash. 3 out of 7 logs came broken. Hired plumber to hook up gas line. When logs were lit smell was so bad no one could stay in the room. Gas log burner has not been used since.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Over 50% less, beautiful looking, what a value I purchased this yesterday and spent 15 minutes installing.it. It looks beautiful, my wife loves it, warms the house nicely, very quiet. I can't say enough good things about this. Would buy it again, should have bought years ago. Anybody could install. The best part was the price,at least 50% less than other online companies and 8 logs, wow. Jim

Rated 5 out of 5 by from This product looks so real! Every thing came in 3 days it looks real it puts out great heat. Most inserts put out 30,000 BTU But this one puts out 60,000 BTU. I am picky but this really impressed me. It was easy to hook up. I give you 5 stars and recommend this to any one looking for a fireplace insert.
