I converted my wood burning fireplace to this gas vent free unit so that something would heat the house when the power goes out. With the wood burning fireplace I installed a power blower to blow hot air into the room but guess what ? no power, no fan. Brrr ....

Yes. That's part of the beauty of gas logs. They are a great secondary heat source in the event of a power outage.

Can you just light the pilot at the beginning of the season and then turn the burner to 'on'
to fire it up, or do you actually have to hold the pilot button down for 30 seconds every time that you want to turn the logs on?

Answer:
No. It's suggested to keep the pilot lit during the season for ease of operation. Then turn it out during Summer months. Some people keep it on year round.

Oakwood 24 in. Vent-Free Natural Gas Fireplace Logs is rated 4.2 out of 5 by 188.
Rated 2 out of 5 by from Could be better Overall not bad for the price but disappointed when I opened the box and one log was broken, not packed well. After opening a "case" at Homedepot.com a replacement log was sent by the manufacturer in a reasonable amount of time. Finally I was installing into my fireplace and noticed the brass nut holding the control to the housing was loose. I fixed that, ready for ignition and....the piezo electric igniter didn't work. I lit the pilot manually and the burner actually worked. Looks good but I'm reluctant to leave the pilot light lit considering the other issues with this set. Poor assembly, testing & inspection.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Two issues Arrived with one log broken, proved to be very hard to get the pilot light going. I had to heat the pilot with a butane lighter to get the gas flow started. Otherwise, nice gas log fire.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Had some issues The install for this gas log set was pretty simple but when I turned on the gas I noticed a gas smell. Upon checking I found the line going from the pressure regulator to the gas control valve was leaking. I removed the line to check for damage and found one of the ends was not made correctly and would of never stopped leaking. I remade a new line myself since the manufacturer told me it would take 4 to six weeks to get a replacement which is a joke. After installing the new line I reinstalled the gas logs and turned the gas back on. I checked it again and there were no more leaks in that area but since I was a little concerned about what I found I checked again and found a small leak on the pilot tube coming off the control valve. I was able to repair this as well but for someone that has little experience with gas appliances this could of been a major problem. I am not sure how this was able to pass inspection during assembly but the quality is defiantly lacking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Oakwood Vent Free NG I ordered the Oakwood Vent Free gas logs expecting very little in appearance because of the low price. We were part of the 300,000 homes that lost power in the December ice storm and I was recovering from surgery. Gas logs sounded like the ideal solution. The logs arrived quickly and wow! was I surprised. Not only do the logs provide the heat I wanted but are also attractive and actually look like real logs. What was only going to be used in an emergency has become almost a daily usage and not having to open the chimney flu is an added bonus. I recommend this product to everyone on a limited budget who wants a beautiful fire burning in their home.

I should have listened to some of the other reviews: The packaging of this product is horrible; arrived with two broken logs and a broken control valve. So far zero telephone calls have been answered to the company (including main numbers, customer support and product support) and their online contact information is either bogus or down indefinitely; the URL cannot be found! I am VERY unhappy with this purchase and hope that HD will stand behind a return.

The only short coming was a broken log when the set arrived. Using the accompanying instruction sheet to find the email address of the manufacturer proved challenging. After repeated attempts both online and by telephone I was able to contact the manufacturer. The phone rang for 10 minutes before being answered. Still waiting for the replacement log, going on 2 weeks now.

The only reason I do not recommend this product is that the factory installed gas regulating valve (PCV) was assembled backwards. It took me some time to figure out why the unit did not work. After reversing the PCV the unit works well.
