Yes you can, close the flue that is what we did. There are pros and cons to this and you will find it all over the net. I choose this method only because it created more heat in the room for my dad. We run it in the summer, he is elderly and always freezing. I put a co2 detector in the room as well, because it is new to us as well. The second reason we purchased this product is the safety features and sensor which the vent free did not offer. We found we use less gas, where as you will see reports it uses more, but this particular model had decreased the bill instead of increasing it. This is going to be a personal choice for you. Answer:
Absolutely. If you have a working chimney flue, you could install this set and close your flue allowing for all of the heat produced to stay in your home.

Do the vent-free gas logs require a chimney? I have a free standing enclosure that I want to use.

Answer:
I'm afraid I disagree with the prior community answer. With vent free logs, you do not need a chimney...although you do need to make sure your firebox enclosure where you want to place the logs meets the minimum dimension requirements for the specific log set to allow for adequate air flow.

Answer:
Yes. The manual indicates they may produce a slight odor during the initial break-in period. It goes away after "a few hours of operation". They suggest opening a window near the unit to help ventilate until the odor dissipates. It's simply the residues from the manufacturing process.

If we just want a low flame for ambiance, vs trying to heat the room, is this possible, or is it "all-on" or "all-off" driven by the thermostat?

Answer:
The lowest setting would put out approximately 25,000 BTU's which could still heat a small room.

The lowest setting would put out approximately 25,000 BTU's which could still heat a small room. You may want to consider a "Vented" log set which put out less heat but look much more realistic. You must have a working chimney for a vented set. Something to consider.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Logs Haven't use them yet to warm. We have them installed. Thanks. August 16, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Look great and feel awesome The installation was easy and the gas logs look great. March 8, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome Purchase I bought this to replace a broken one that was installed by a professional. We read the directions, installed new connections from the burner to gas line, if you are unsure of yourself do not attempt this call a HVAC person to install this for you. If you are a DIYer and know how to install this yourself and save that extra headache. The price is good for the product, it has a sensor and adjusts itself accordingly to heat the room. It looks real, has a slider log on the front to cover controls for safety, also has a built in safety off switch. We learned as we went, do not put the sensor inside the fireplace allow it to be slightly outside the opening or it will turn itself off once the inside near the fire gets to a certain temperature. Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Fireplace logs Easy to install, worked on the first try and really heavy duty logs. Arrived earlier then stated nd in perfect shape. April 12, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Keeps your feet warm Was easy to install and works great. Naturally you will need to run it on high with the windows open for a few hours to burn off any manufacturing or shipping residue. After that, the logs have no odor and you would not know they were in the room except for the heat they deliver. The pilot light and thermostat work great. The fireplace had old logs (I believe from the 1950’s when the house was built) that heated well but they had no controls. You lit the logs and hope they did not burn the house down. With the new logs, I can set the thermostat and the fireplace keeps the first floor of the house warm. March 20, 2014
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Great Product! This was easy to install. It heats up the room quickly and efficiently. The only downside is that it's a little noisy, but for the price, it's a great product. March 29, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great insert. I had a local gas installer install the fireplace insert. I especially like the feature that the fireplace gets to a particular temperature and maintains that temperature without having to get up and adjust the temperature constantly. I would recommend this insert to anyone looking to buy a new insert. December 22, 2014
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by unit I received was used Waiting on replacement unit, returned first unit to the store after waiting over hour on the phone with manufacture, still no answer. Unit appeared to be a return item. Received in the LP position, I had ordered natural gas. Label showing position was torn, Tried to re position to natural gas but hole would not line up.I will write a review after receiving replacement unit. Just worried about quality and service on this unit, I am replacing a unit I have had for over 20 years. March 18, 2014
