Answer:
Absolutely. In fact it comes with a bag of shale which is very similar to lava rocks...just smaller.

Answer:
It is not recommended by the manufacturer because this unit is not stainless steel which would hold up better in the elements. It will operate although may weather /rust quicker than a stainless steel unit.

Do the vent-free gas logs require a chimney? I have a free standing enclosure that I want to use.

Answer:
I'm afraid I disagree with the prior community answer. With vent free logs, you do not need a chimney...although you do need to make sure your firebox enclosure where you want to place the logs meets the minimum dimension requirements for the specific log set to allow for adequate air flow.

Customer Reviews

Rated 4.0 out of 5 by 160 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by a few hiccupps but so far a great product Installation was simply installed by a professional. Problem was that there were no clear instructions on how to ignite the unit. Did not want to force the button. But on Monday we were able to contact customer support for the Oakwood company and got it up and running! It heats efficiently and if you go to 3 and up it actually works better than my furnace! Now we will see exactly how much LP gas the unit will use in a few days. Great purchase, excellent price, fantastic customer service. December 8, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by No problems The logs arrived well-packaged with no broken parts. Took only a few minutes to replace my old gas logs with these and they look and operate better than my old ones. The old ones did not have a thermostat, requiring me to get up repeatedly to turn them on and off. The Oakwood logs thermostat works well, and my electric forced air heating bill has fallen about one half as a result. Yes, the pilot light makes a little noise but it isn't obtrusive. One unexpected advantage of these logs is that they not only turn on and off automatically but the flame height also adjusts automatically. I had expected it to simply be on-off like my old ones. Also, these logs look better than my old ones. I was a little hesitant about buying these given some of the negative reviews but I have had no problems and really like them. March 1, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by This is a Great Value If you have looked around for gas logs and saw prices like I did of 5 and $600 and up, you can appreciate how good of a deal these logs are. I have a modest 3 bedroom 2 bath home of about 1500 sq ft. We recently had temps down in the teens and this log set was the only heat I used. They kept the house a cozy 75 degrees on the lowest setting possible. I had these running 3 days straight and the house was never warmer. At this price, you would have a real hard time convincing me that those other logs are worth the money March 1, 2016
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Don't waste your money The knob does not adjust the size of the flames at all. It's either off or on. When flames are on, sometimes they just go out (even though it's turned all the way up). On one occasion, the flames had gone out, but we didn't realize it was still on. Next time we lit the fire it resulted in a "ball of flames." I paid $80 to have it professionally installed by Suburban Propane. The only plus is that the ceramic logs do not smell like fiber logs. Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by Awesome purchase This unit was extremely simple to install.. Works awesome. Extremely efficient. My wife loves the look as well as the heat it emulates. I would recommend to everybody. February 25, 2015
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Good price, has thermostat and I am using it now. Was 11 degrees last night and was glad to have it. The thermostat allowed me to leave it on last night with lessened fear. My HVAC unit heating coils are fried and I am waiting for replacement. Glad to have this heat source to carry us through. January 19, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great product right price I was looking to replace a set of logs that I already had .So I priced them from 399 to 750 dollars. At the time I saw your ad for heaters on sale . I was surprised to see the difference in price that homedepot had when I was looking at the reviews I has convinced to try them out .I never give reviews but as I was saying after reading the reviews I decided to purchase . Thanks for a great product and all of you who have gave reviews or I wouldn't have been tempted to try them. December 29, 2015
Rated 1.0 out of 5.0 by Did not work After being told we would not be able to get the product we went back to the store too look at a different set. My wife just happened to speak to the lady at customer service who was able to reorder the logs for us. After receiving the logs they would not stay lit longer than 2 to 3 minutes. Not a good purchase. December 9, 2015
