In my opinion, Embers Charcoal has dominated Kingsford for years. The recent relaunch of Embers Charcoal has been great for me. The briquettes burn better than the competitors and give the perfect amount of heat and smoky flavor that I have come to expect from charcoal. I wouldn't consider buying anything other than Embers Charcoal.

Lights fast and gets hot quickly. I was ready to cook in about 15 minutes. Plus a great value.

I've been looking for an alternative to Kingsford since they changed their briquettes (package says: "Burns longer and hotter", but I've noticed that they burn out much quicker).
When lighting these briquettes; plumes of dark smoke fill the air for way too long a time. I use a chimney and newspaper (the same way I light Kingsford) , so I don't know if you'd have the same results if you use fluid to start.
The slow starting and way too much smoke were deal breakers for me so I only bought one bag. Because of this, I can't say if these burn longer or shorter, but the bag I had had a lot of broken briquettes and dust...

Rated 4 out of 5Â by BigG Excellent alternative
I've used about 15 brands of lump and briquette charcoal. They each have their own applications. Some store brands or cheap charcoal have trouble lighting, or uneven/incomplete burning. No problems at all with this. It's royal oak charcoal out of Georgia, I find they have decent lump as we'll, a lot of oak content. Burns hot, long, complete, great value and flavor.
