The thermostat has a battery backup using 3 AAA batteries. The unit is normally powered by house current.

Lost internet connection

Before I buy, I have to ask, Is there some kind of backup if you lose internet connection ?
Asked by: OverKill
It's supposed to maintain the schedule that's active if the wi-fi connection is lost, and believe me, the wi-fi connection on mine drops out a lot. But my schedule still functions without the wi-fi. The schedule can't be revised without the wi-fi connection. The wi-fi connection on mine drops out every few monts and I have to delete the thermostat in the app and reinstall it. A real pain.

Does the display on the thermostat stay lit all the time as pictured in the add?
Asked by: bobanshee
Yes. Go to settings on App, Select Thermostat Display, then go to Continuous Backlight and select "ON". This will keep thermostat lit all the time. App works great on my Android phone.

The instructions to install this thermostat should be the gold standard for instructions. It was a simple step by step instructions on your iPad with videos if you got stuck. The thermostat works great remotely and it even tells you the humidity in the house and the local weather all on one display on your remote devices. Easy to tell if everything is working. The thermostat itself has a large read out, easy to see even without glass, on only the important info displayed, temp set and current temp, time, battery condition (runs on AA), heat/cooling mode, fan mode and schedule on/off (this one is so smart and if you are on vacation and want to set one temperature) One concern is the thermostat clips onto the plastic bracket, we will have to see if the clips last. So far they seem fine and you would only have to take it off to change the batteries. To I don't think it is a big issue. All in all a great thermostat.

I mean, it controls the ac/heat just fine but the wifi does not connect and when it does it disconnects. It's very annoying. So far, I've disabled wifi and I am using as a traditional thermostat. I tried returning and getting another one, same thing.

Rated 1 out of 5 by from Garbage This unit does not stay connected to wifi. Getting it reconnected entails resetting the unit, which takes 10 minutes and only stays connected for 20-30 minutes before dropping the connection again. This is the only device in my house that refuses to stay connected to either of my two access points. To make matters worse, you can only configure the schedule using the wifi app, not on the device itself. If your unit is not connected to wifi, majority of the features you would want from a digital Thermostat are inaccessible.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Simple, Intelligent, Easy to Use WI-FI Thermostat for Everyone! Out with the old and in with the new! It seems that my home has been retrofitted with the newest tech that I can get! The addition of the Sensi Wi-Fi to the basement level of the house allows me to keep much better track of the temp than previously available. I do a lot of art and music in my basement and when I have band rehearsals down there, I need to make sure it's cool. I'm able to use the quality of this Thermostat to keep a more consistent and cool space. My old one, installed by the original home builder, wasn't dependable and never seemed to work as it should have. When I set this one to 64, it stays there and keeps my entire basement level cool. The installation was so easy. I had it out of the box and installed in less than 1 hour. Mind you, I am very methodical about installs like this and really took my time. There is an amazing feature called GeoFencing built into it. It uses your phone's location to tell where you are. If you are home, it stays on. When gone, it runs at a reduced capacity so that you don't run up the power bill. I think you'll see the ease of use for yourself. The App is simple and robust, with a schedule that you can create. I recommend this model for your home.

The Sensi St-55 WiFi thermostat really is excellent, combining cool remote home control features and value in a stylish package. Its design and execution is very well thought out. The case and wiring is pretty standard for any thermostat produced this century, however, the software and processing hardware make this unit great. The installation was uber easy, complete with a smart online installation application that validated the configuration and the installer's understanding of it and then graphically showed which wires to connect to which terminal (see pictures). This has, hands-down, the best installation instruction guide I've ever used. It took just over 30 minutes from installation app install to operating the working device. The unit has a built-in bubble level (see picture) that makes delivering a cosmetically correct install a breeze. After supplying the proper network security credentials using the installation app on the iPhone, the unit connected right away to my network using the 802.11n 2.4GHz band on my cable company supplied dual band Arris cable modem/router. It will only work on the 2.4GHz band. There are some routers that are incompatible, so it would be good to check to make validate yours is compatible before purchasing using their excellent web site. The application that Emerson supplies for this unit is another example of great usability and well thought-out features. The splash screen gives you all the basic information you would expect (inside temp, operating mode and program schedule) and also adds local weather data including current temp, forecasted high & low temp, forecast icon and humidity. It allows you to manually adjust temp, set the operating mode and control the fan. The selectable operating modes include an auto setting that switches between heart and cool as the program calls for. It defaults to two program schedules, one for weekdays and one for weekends. You can create multiple schedules using a very intuitive user interface (see picture). The graphical depiction of the program is awesome. You can name the device in case you have more than one zone and have separate programs for each. The app also allows you to lock out users from using the manual controls and enable features to start your unit early to allow it to reach a programmed temp at a specified time. The app also supports geofencing which has been around for many years, but I'd not seen used on thermostat before. It is really quite a clever way to save energy costs. It automatically adjusts the temp 3 degrees when you are more than 3 miles from the device (assuming you have not disabled location access). The unit and app will also automatically deliver alerts, which I've not seen as they represent likely problems with the HVAC unit). The only thing to watch on this the need for 2AA batteries used to power the wifi if you don't have a 24V "C" wire. The unit will continue to operate the programmed schedules even if the wifi goes dead or the connection is lost, but the maintenance of the batteries is something that has to looked after periodically. it's easy to replace them. To reduce battery drain, you can adjust the PSP settings on some routers to slow the polling rate down, but that's not trivial and may cause issues with other devices on your network. The unit has been reliable, even with my occasionally flaky network (we live in a rural area). It reconnected easily whenever the infrequent connectivity losses occurred (no fault of the device). Bottom line is that we are delighted with this unit. Emerson hit a home run with this device with excellent hardware/software engineering and usability. Looking forward to additional software upgrades.

This thing has been awesome for me - I travel a lot for my job and in the past had sometimes forgotten to change the thermostat before leaving on a week-long business trip. I find it frustrating to heat/cool my home when I'm not actually there! Sensi was easy to install, even for a novice like me (I'm not much into DIY projects) and it's been great being able to adjust the temp in my home, even when I'm across the country. It's been a very wise investment for me and I've recommended it to many of my friends and family. I love landing at the airport; making a temperature adjustment as I taxi to the gate; and, my home being comfortable as soon as I walk through the front door.

I first checked to make sure the wifi signal was sufficient in the area of the thermostat. I used an Android app to measure it. Reflectivity and absorption of microwave signals used in wifi can make placement tricky. Line of sight is best. Mine was not but still had a -55dbm signal available so it hooked right up. If you cannot get yours to hook up, try moving your hub even a few inches and try again. We have had a balmy fall and I have been running mine at 60 degrees. This week we finally had some chilly mornings in the 30s and I moved it up to 68 and then back to 60 when I got to the office. Works very well with my Wink hub 2

After considerable time on the phone with tech support, and digging out my multimeter, the tech determined that we had some odd wiring that didn't work with the WI-fi enabled Sensi stat - but of course worked just fine with our existing mechanical stat. They did offer a no cost fix but after the time invested in the rather clunky "installation app" and troubleshooting we opted for a return and refund, thank you very much. This feels very much like a "not quite ready for prime time" product suitable for early adapters only.
