The Empire 16 in. x 24 in. Steel Framing Square is one tough square. The square is steel which has some weight to stay in place and not shift. The markings are stamped and protected with an epoxy finish to protect from rust. The coating leaves a shiny smooth covering which reflects light and blackening the marks would have helped visibility. I use it mostly as a guide for setting cuts so the stamped markings are not as important for me, but the numbers are large and can be read just fine in good lighting. What I need in a square is true alignment and in this regard my Empire square is solidly accurate. Its a good standard framing square at a great price.

Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Tallowweazel It's very square.
It's very square, one of the squarest squares I've had. I've been using it for several weeks and it is still square. Also very quiet. To summarize, it's a quiet, square, square.

I much prefer steel framing squares to aluminum. Because these can be subject to a little abuse here and there, they can go out of square. There are a few tricks to bring it back into square, but they won't work with aluminum because of the nature of the material.
I really like that this is epoxy coated. It will keep the rust at bay, but everything is still every to read, and the edges are still flat enough to register a pencil or marking knife up against.
I don't see myself needing another framing square unless I lose this one. Terrific product.

Been using these since I was fourteen in 1971. Still makes projects faster, and nicer looking. Metal, so expect it to last. For the important function it serves, I'm surprised on the low price.

The Empire Framing Square is a great addition to any woodworker’s or carpenter’s tools. The epoxy coating on the laser-cut rules makes for clear readings of the measurements, and the out-of-the-box accuracy is spot-on.
I drew a straight line on some plywood, then marked a 90 degree line. I then flipped the square over on the 90 degree line I just marked, realigned the square on the first straight line, then marked a 90-degree line, trying to stay on the previously marked line.
The second 90-degree line was right on the first line, confirming the square’s accuracy! I have been very happy with Empire’s measurement tools and will be happy to include this one in my woodworking tool set!

Very good value, the markings are reasonably easy to read. Drawbacks are weight, lack of ink in the stamped characters to help legibility and lack of rafter length tables. Fine tool for a small remodeling project.

I've had this square for about a year, and the epoxy coating has started to come off. The markings are also a little difficult to read. However, I doubt you'll find anything vastly superior to this square if you don't want to spend big bucks. It gets the job done.

Has easy to read etchings on both sides (which is not listed in description of product) and is true to square. Sturdy enough to last and stand up to occasional roughness. Best buy out there!
