Customer Questions & Answers

How frequently do you need to add water to the self-watering system?

Asked by: EP
I live in Florida, during 90 degree weather I had to water it once or twice a week depending on location of planter (partial or full sun). I also had to water certain plants more than others. It depends mostly on plants, sunlight, and air temperature. I did bring mine in and used it to propagate seeds and it worked great. I did not water it more than once every two weeks and my house is extremely air tight and dry. I made a cover for it the second planting and I watered it once and when plants were big enough I moved them to outside planting beds.

Tomato blossom rot

I have several really large plants, and the first fruits have blossom rot :-(. With this City Picker container (I have two), I added the lime, plant food and additional soil ~ a week after I planted them. They've grown much quicker and larger than the other plants, but I'm wondering if I put too little lime around them? Is there any way I can salvage them? Help!
Asked by: captivated1
This has happened to me for three years running, so I have stopped growing the large tomatoes in these and just stick with the cherry types. Even though the instructions advise you to add the dolomite which is crushed calcium magnesium (giving the plants the calcium that they need to stay healthy), i think the amount of slow release fertilizer ties it up (too much nitrogen) and the larger tomatoes just don't get the calcium they need. You can try purchasing a calcium spray for blossom end rot and start using it on the blossoms and fruit. The next time you plant these boxes, try a soil tester and make sure that the ph is at least 6.5. That should help release the calcium in the soil. Good luck.

Does the watering tub fit onto something? It doesn't stand on its own in the circle.

Asked by: Szmigiel
There is one corner with a different, rounded, shape in the grate...It will stay there once you have added soil. Hope that helps!

Mulch cover burns plants?

I planted my new city picker garden on Sunday, everything looked great. I came home Monday from a rather hot day at work to find my lush plants (especially the bell pepper plant) to have yellow, burned leaves where they were touching the black plastic mulch cover. Once I watered again they perked up, but nonetheless burned leaves. Anyone experience this, and if so, is the mulch cover necessary? Plastic seems to heat up and potentially burn low leaves...
Asked by: LmBrown
No, the cover is not required. You can use any form of mulch (pine bark, shredded cedar, straw, etc.). The leaves of any plant will burn if they rest on ha hot surface, such as black plastic, but it shouldn't effect the plant in the long run. I kept the black plastic on and will do so until it really warms up here in Upstate NY.

City Pickers 24.5 in. x 20.5 in. Patio Raised Garden Bed Grow Box Kit with Watering System and Casters in Terra Cotta is rated 4.3 out of 5 by 449.
Rated 5 out of 5 by from These are going to give us a great garden this year. We are very pleased with this purchase. We are Seniors and last year we did not have a garden because it had become to hard for us. We did some research and found these on several different sites but at a much higher price than Home Depot. We purchased 3 of them. We had another large planter and after seeing these made some changes and now we have four large beds. Our son built them a platform to sit in at waist level. No more bending over to weed. It is great. (pictures attached) We bought our plants and four large bag of potting soil and things are coming along. Shipping was fast, they came in 5 days. Yes we would recommend these for anyone but especially for Seniors.

The picture of tomatoes planted with lettuce does not fit with the instructions given - they cannot be planted together according to the enclosed planting instructions. The rubber bands provided to hold the undersized black plastic sheet in place didn't even last 1 week! The instructions on placement of the fill tube are non-specific as to which corner of the box to use (not the grid) resulting in my incorrectly placing the fill tube on one of the boxes, and inadequate filling of the reservoir. I like the casters on the box - it makes it easy to rotate the box as the plants grow.

Rated 2 out of 5 by from Cheap rubber bands I am not sure I would recommend this poduct, but please be aware. The black plastic is just a sheet of black plastic . You have o put over the top and then you stretch a large rubber band around. Kind of difficult to make sure even on all 4 sides. It is not nice and neat like the picture. I bought 2 of these planters. When putting together, one of the wheels broke because I was having to put some much pressure on it to go into the planter. I then had to go and buy a new wheel which did not swivel because it was the closest to the size. I had for less than a month on my deck and both rubber bands broke within 2 days of each other. I am having to lay wood, rocks, etc on the 4 corners to keep the plastic sheet down. But the plants are doing well in the soil. You decide.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Nice Setup for a Patio Garden I bought two of these garden beds to grow tomatoes and cucumbers on my patio. Assembly was simple and filling with potting mix was easy enough. It comes with very specific instructions for buying potting mix, garden lime, and fertilizer. I had to search very carefully to find the recommended potting mix - only one of about a dozen types I looked at had the correct ingredients (primary constituent sphagnum peat and/or coir). I followed the very detailed instructions to add the potting mix, garden lime, and fertilizer to the grow boxes, covered them with the included plastic mulch cover, and planted my crop. It is important to use enough potting mix to form a 2" mound above the sides of the box as directed. This will keep rain water from pooling on the plastic mulch cover. In my opinion the casters are only marginally able to handle the weight of the completed garden bed. I broke one rolling against a joint in my patio pavers. I added four segments of 18" long segments of border fencing to form a 12" to 18" high fence box to support my plants as they grow. So far my plants are doing great. Just water DAILY.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Wheels aren't sturdy with weight I bought this a couple summers ago and the wheel broke off the first time I tried moving it over my patio. I would say put it where you want it, fill it and don't move it which defeats the purpose of the wheels. Nice place for garden herbs.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great purchase! Easy set up, easy to move if needed. I bought two. I planted strawberries in one and onions in the other. You could easily plant a mixed veggie or flower garden in these. My only complaint is that the mulch cover didn't fit. It's too small. I used my own mulch so it's no big deal. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from The best gardening product ever!! I have a lot of garden space available, so I wasn't sure if this was the right product for me. However, the results I've gotten from using it, and the ease of use has prompted me to buy two more. As an experiment I planted 8 vegetable plants in the Patio Garden Kit, and the same 8 plants in a regular pot. The vegetables in the Patio Kit are giant and thriving while the plants in the regular pots are sad looking and shriveled, even though I water and fertilize them regularly . The Patio Garden Kit gives the perfect amount of water so I can't over or under water. It's idiot proof, and perfect if you don't have a green thumb. You can also roll it in our out of the sun easily which is great.
