I planted six the first three or four years I had them. There's plenty of water and nutrients for everyone. They were the most incredible tomatoes ever! Caging was the only problem I had. If you tie the cages together for mutual support it works pretty well but
I ended up building a wooden structure to fit on and over the box.

I planted one Sun Gold cherry tomato, and it completely filled the planter. I had to keep cutting it back to 7 feet tall so I could pick the tomatoes. You could get by with two smaller tomatoes, or maybe more patio size plants.

I had three types of tomatoes in one and I felt like it was too many. They competed for sun and grew into each other. I believe that if I only had two plants in each, they would each grow larger, giving me the same amount of fruit anyway.

How heavy/sturdy is it? We have strong winds with storms and I don't want to have to move the planter when it is windy.

Answer:
I live in Cincinnati and we have crazy weather. I haven't had to move mine other than scooting it back out of direct sunlight. It's on wheels and is easy to move. It's pretty heavy with all the soil and water, so it should stay in place. If you have torrid weather, you may have to add some weight by putting stones on top, or just move it closer to the house during severe storms.

We can not guarantee how your box will perform in high winds. The boxes are a bit top heavy when they are filled with dirt. Try using it where there is less wind. Thanks and good luck.

Thank you for the interest in our product. This does not come with the soil, dolomite, etc. These items are easily purchased at any lawn and garden section. Once in use, though, they do produce fantastic plants that grow big and very fruitful. Once again, thank you for your interest and enjoy the rest of the summer season.

No, you will have to purchase your desired type of soil and amendments. If you will be planning to grow plants that thrive with caging or support, you will also have to add those pieces. I recommend holding the cover on with rocks or office supply binder clips; the rubber band included might hold on for a couple of days...

No. It is the unit, wheels, inside grate and black plastic cover and rubber band. You purchase soil and all additives plus plants and/or seedlings. I would advise using twine or rope to tie the black plastic cover into place. The rubber band will break within a day or two.

Rated 4.3 out of 5 by 383 reviewers.
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by These are going to give us a great garden this year. We are very pleased with this purchase. We are Seniors and last year we did not have a garden because it had become to hard for us. We did some research and found these on several different sites but at a much higher price than Home Depot. We purchased 3 of them. We had another large planter and after seeing these made some changes and now we have four large beds. Our son built them a platform to sit in at waist level. No more bending over to weed. It is great. (pictures attached) We bought our plants and four large bag of potting soil and things are coming along. Shipping was fast, they came in 5 days. Yes we would recommend these for anyone but especially for Seniors. May 17, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Wonderful garden planter This is a good sized deck garden planter. It holds water in the bottom that continues to water no mater how hot it gets. My plants are doing great. I just wish the wheels would stay on when I move it off the deck for cleaning. This is built weld and I now have 2 planters. July 23, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Cannot Believe the Growth! I don't normally rave about a product but I am really impressed with City Pickers. I've been an avid gardener for years; the past two, trying out the straw bale method. I liked that, but I think City Pickers has it beat! I've experienced phenomonal growth of the tomato and pepper plants in just 4-5 weeks and I will have fruit much earlier than ever before. After reading reviews about the high failure rate of the rubber band included for securing the black plastic "cover", I didn't bother with it, choosing instead to use small clips. June 19, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by So Far SO good - but only a season will tell I gave it a four, but it could and will become a five depending on the results. I got them and setup about three weeks ago. The setup was quick and easy. The weather did not permit anything sooner. I planted 6 tomatoes in one and 4 tomatoes and 1 eggplant in another, I wish I would have read the question and answers prior to this and would have limited the number of plants. They are growing real fast - watering once a week. But as it gets hotter it looks like I will have to water daily. Also worried about supporting the plants as they grow. I will probably build supports around them. The pics show my two planters one is about 4 weeks the other three. Both are doing really well. I will update my posying at end of year to tell how they did. May 31, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Great for tomatoes This is the second season I have used this to grow tomatoes. I was so happy with the tomatoes last year that I bought a second planter. I followed the directions, using a mix of potting mix and peat moss, added a layer of garden lime and some plant food. June 4, 2016
Rated 5.0 out of 5.0 by Patio garden I let the grandkids use this to plant a garden - they have way too many plants per container, but everything seems to be producing vegetables. It's only the end of June & they have already picked Peas, green beans, zucchini, summer squash & peppers. I will definitely use again next year! June 26, 2016
Rated 4.0 out of 5.0 by City Picker I found the city picker to be convenient for growing lettuce and herbs. I like the wheels so I can easily move it out of the sun to a shadier area when needed. I was a bit disappointed with the black plastic cover and rubber band to hold it into place. That was a bit tacky. Seems the manufacturer could have provided a simple, plastic, removable top. But, overall Im happy with the City Picker. I have already harvested the lettuce I need on a daily basis. I like the convenience of having and growing my own food. May 17, 2016
